Props to Cow for sticking with his team no matter what.
looking forward to watching the battle of the bottom tonight.
If I were a Devils fan, I would've broken a few TV's this season. Tonight, maybe 2.
Why?
It's almost like justification for all the complaints I've made about our shitty players. Clarkson never developed into anything. Zubrus has always blown. Langs started fading last year and I was hoping he would be trade bait, and he's got a negative attitude for a captain. I still like Elias. Zajac has never done anything without Parise and never shoots enough. Rolston had nothing since he got here and is the worst contract on the team. Kovalchuk was the biggest mistake ever. Count how many times he loses the puck trying to do too much per game. He can't skate through the neutral zone to save his goddamn life.
Volchenkov is alright, but you let Martin walk, and Oduya wasn't as awful as a lot of people painted him to be. Now we're stuck with a team where Colin White is your number one d-man, and Andy Greene, who had one hell of a fluke season is now the worst on the team in +/- after being asked to LEAD the team. Stupidity has come from everywhere.
Lou is old. He keeps going back to his old favorites. Hell, we've got Fayne on the team because he went to PC. The league has passed him by, and he hasn't coped well with this cap era at all. Parise has been the best player on the team for like three years now, but everyone else has been sliding into a funk, and I think after so many disappointing postseasons the whole team is a team of losers and needs to be blown up. I'm pretty happy this season is happening because it ought to guarantee a blow up of this team, somehow.
The problem is, with shit contracts like Rolston's, and now Kovalchuk's (worst contract in the NHL btw, worse than DiPietro's) we're completely assfucked. A lot of Devils, and fans, are saying "there's no way this will happen two seasons in a row" and I think we're in for much worse than that. I think the team is entering a dark age. Lou's traded off a lot of our better prospects with a "this must be the year we can get it done!" attitude for the last few seasons and the team has just gotten older and shittier. The farm system is thin to begin with because of having low draft picks/traded away lots of draft picks, and we are thoroughly fucked.
Kovalchuk better learn how to play hockey, and I mean become a complete player, because he's lacking so many elementary skills that he breaks any line he's put on, and we're fucking stuck with him forever.
The shame of it all is that it's no fun to watch, not because we're not winning, but because the team is just fucking awful. The whole team. There are no silver linings or anything. You know? I mean back in the day the team was rising and there were some great players to watch work magic, and the whole underdog/chip on shoulder thing was going for us. But now we've been established and there are expectations, despite the fact that Devils fans have carried that chip on their shoulder the whole time. So, I don't really have that, and there aren't any players that are even fun to watch. Elias can still work magic, sometimes, but he's old too, and he just can't do it alone. Marty is old. The defense is NONEXISTENT. There are no thrilling games or spectacular save sequences anymore. The D doesn't bail Marty out on rebounds on the weakside anymore. Fights don't mean anything. It's just tiring to watch. There are no bright spots. This is an old broken team with no drive and little gas left in the tank.
But you've got to hit rock bottom sometime, and I felt this coming for a loooong time. I think the last two seasons the Devils have grossly over-performed, and I cringed at every cup-run trade that was made.
I hope everyone gets fired.
Clarkson
Zubrus
Arnott
Langenbrunner
Rolston
The entire defense corps except White and Volchenkov
The entire fourth line
Zajac can stay, but I wouldn't mind him leaving either
Parise MUST stay
Kovalchuk, well we have no choice
Elias can stay, for now. Why not.
Marty can stay...I mean you can't get rid of him at this point, and since he's loyal to the Devils, the most loyal, I grant him immunity to play for us as long as he wants. He'll always have a pass in my book.
Pretty much everyone else on the team can take a flying goddamn leap, and I hope we clean house as best we can and end up with some young guys I can actually root for. It's more fun watching the Islanders. But it's not like I'm going to stop being a fucking fan. NJDevils for Life.
It's really a shame that Buffalo is having such a terrible year, being my second team.
There's a reason why Yoshi always called me chicken little, and there's also a reason why Yoshi isn't here now.
Hey, at least you're hanging in there and not hiding behind some "I hate the NHL and therefore am not posting in TNL's hockey thread" facade. My respect for him as a hockey fan is gone.
You make a lot of good points - some of which I think I've made over the past few seasons. I realize having a Rangers fan (abeit, not a typical Rangers fan) criticize your team can be twice as annoying, but I don't hate the Devils (or the Islanders). Personally, I feel terribly for both (Isles/Devs) organizations and it really doesn't do metro-area hockey any good to have 2/3 sucking and one being coached well but lacking talent.
What's really sad is Elias. Elias is good. Really good. The second half of his career has been plagued by shitty line mates. He would have been well served if he changed teams. I love the man.
I lost my hate for the Rangers over the years as we kicked their butts and they remained irrelevant but now that the Rangers have life it's getting really annoying.
94 sucked but we hadn't really done anything yet, so it wasn't too bad. I hate Philly and Carolina way more.
After reading the Cow post ... I feel bad for not watching more hockey. What's worse is that most Flyers game, scratch that, all Flyers games are on Comcast Sportsnet ... and I have DirectTV. I have to follow it via newspapers or the 'net. And I just don't have the motivation to do it. I'm a pathetic hockey fan. After the NFL season is done, I should be posting more in here.
sorry.
Brodeur has been awful since coming back from that elbow injury. I hardly recognize the guy.
