Now this is a potential killer app portable game. These might be the two best series on the DS, and now we get them combined and in 3D? I just hope the localization doesn't take forever.

Who will win?

Awesome, combine 2 boring franchises together!
This thread made my head explode. And kingoffighters is a horrible person.
I will play the absolute living fuck out of this.
I like this thread more! OHGODDAYONE
I played through the first game of both franchise, and couldn't wait for either one to end. One has no gameplay, the other has simplistic puzzles.
I am surprised that TNL would love these games considering that we are supposed to be more critical on this type of casual gaming wrapped in an admittedly slick presentation.
Phoenix Wright is an interactive graphic novel with obvious ploys into a self serving sense of intelligence. Yes, the gameplay boils down to just clicking an item and presenting it, but what's really happening is you know why you are and what it means, you reward your own comprehension and problem solving skills even though there's only one right way to do it. It's a great way to compel you into caring about what's going on, and it helps that it's funny with good characters and music to boot.
Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, three dimensions, and a witchcraft trial. How could anyone possibly hate this formula?
Day one. It's going to be harder to not pick up a 3DS before Nintendo releases the 3DS Lite.
the two shots of the pointing at each other made me laugh lemonade onto my lap. jesus. i've played neither of these games but i may give this a shot in 5 years.
This game better be hard as fuck.
I didn't realize that we had this many TNLers that like Professor Layton. This game will be day 1 if I have a 3DS at the time of release.
It won't be, of course, but I'm looking forward to reading and tapping!
KOF is so right in this thread it hurts.
Razor beat me to it.
Both these series are awesome, but together?
SUPER AWESOME
Some people just have terrible taste I guess!
As conceptually cool as this sounds the designs really don’t mesh.
But that doesn't have a little girl channeling the spirit of your dead boss, giant jugs and all.
Ema or Gee Tee Eff Oh.
Trailer in a language you don't understand!
Looks like it's time for a good old fashioned witch hunt.

I really wish they'd gone with one or the other. I know people on either side would've complained, but it looks amazing instead of Lego Man Layton in Phoenix Wright World. I don't even know which one i like better: Tonka Truck Phoenix Wright or Manly Man Layton. (the robot is pretty silly)
SORRY NO CONFIRMATION YET (but i'd actually be surprised if this one didn't come over, but not too surprised because Capcom is an anal stink gland)
Layton in Phoenix Wright style looks awesome.
Mystic Maya looks great in the Layton style!
I dont think phoenix in layton style looks laytonish at all!
He doesn't look like a Layton character, but he could walk around in the Layton world without looking weirdly out of place.
He looks like a bobblehead.
Go Phoenix style.
Freaking finally.
Glad this is finally confirmed, it looks pretty neat.
Eurogamer: 8/10
Cart or bust.
oh god is this going to get a cart?
I hope so =/ Who is publishing?
Edge: 7/10
Phoenix Wright would probably win because Layton can't cross the god damn bridge because he didn't get the yellow piece out from the back behind all the other pieces of the square
or some other bullshit

NA release date: August 29th
Featuring the return of Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi, serving as the director/scenario designer/writer of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
Published by Nintendo.
Amazon has price-matched Gamestop's $31.99 pre-order price, leading to Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney displacing the Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Premium Edition at the top of the 3DS bestsellers list.
I put in a pre-order for this along with Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call.
I think i'm close to the end and i really like it. It really is Layton smashed with Phoenix Wright, but it also feels like its own thing. I'm surprised at how heavy it gets
Chapter 6 spoiler:
It loses a little of that once it's revealed that all of the witches are still alive. I was convinced there was some intentional commentary on sexism until Luke got too many pats on the back for mansplaining and m'ladying Maya at every chance. I was hoping he'd get the beating he deserves, but it's not that kind of game... The end to the third trial was surprisingly poignant, even for a Layton or Wright game, and they both have their moments (and failed moments).
I'm not nearly as far, but yeah, so far so good. I don't think it's as good as the best of the PW or Layton games, but it's a good mashup so far.
Also, Phoenix is a terrible puzzle solver, but Layton may be a better lawyer than Phoenix.
He also says "Hold It!" like a gentleman.
Professor Layton is the only person in either series who isn't an idiot
That's true, but Phoenix slams the desk and points like a boss.
It's how sleeve got his degree.
Sleeve doesn't like Ace Attorney because he's bad at pointing and yelling "OBJECTION" and "HOLD IT!"
i bet sleeve doesn't even fight wacky prosecutors...
What is with this story? It's gotten darker somehow! Finch, tell me it gets happier after the alchemist case...
That case, everything is going fine, then BAM!
Layton goes to save Phoenix, ends up getting "killed," then Phoenix has to defend Maya against murdering Layton with Luke being one of the proesecution's first witnesses?
This game rules.
It gets crazier. Trust me.
No doubt. I think that's what I like most about this game. Since it's not set in the "real world" it goes to some crazy places.
It's a really good game! Like i said earlier, it smashes up the two series but ends up feeling like it's own thing. It's the best fan fiction you could hope for. I'd still put it ahead of AA4 unless it really bottoms out towards the end.
So much sad right now :(
I'm currently drowning my sorrows in Hidden Puzzles.
Layton puzzles never did it for me. They all just seemed like puzzles from a Dell puzzle annual on a grocery store newsstand with some charming characters and amazing art in between. The puzzles in this game are far more interactive, though. Far better than the Curious Village (which I never could finish)!
I keep thinking i'm at the very end but it keeps going and it keeps delivering. People who said this game was bad are dumb idiots. YOU HEAR THAT CHRIS KOHLER!?? DUMB. IDIOTS.
Seriously! Look at this review:
http://www.siliconera.com/2014/09/13...utiful-hollow/
Fine that he didn't enjoy the game. His critiques are bizarre and nitpicky.
Seriously?Quote:
You know that dialogue shortcut where character A says something and character B just repeats back a key word or phrase from the original statement? That is SO much of the dialogue in this game. Says Luke, “I think you’re a witch!” Says Layton “… a Witch?” It’s sloppy, and neither franchise has this issue in their regular games.
Fuck those motherfuckers. My only minor complaint is that the puzzles and trials are pretty easy compared to both series' main games, but there are plenty of Layton and Ace Attorney games to get my fix of difficult puzzles and trials. Let this game do its thing.
I'm on the last trial now. Gonna try to wrap it up tonight. I'm kinda sad that the group works well together, but we'll likely never see them in the same game again. Just plain ol Layton and Luke might be boring after this.
Gonna be a lonnnngggg night. Better ask Emeer if he has anything left to share in that bottle of his.
GOHAN AND FINCH THIS SPOILER IS FROM THE LAST TRIAL He's my favorite witness aside from the full ten-unit garrison of Vigilante's from the Final Trial GOHAN AND FINCH THIS SPOILER IS FROM THE LAST TRIAL
I'm glad to hear that (didn't click the spoiler)
Holy crap yes. The animation in ALLLLLllll of the character is so good. It's a treat, and no one seems to be rolling in it is much as i am. It's seriously fantastic.
I love how this went (end game spoiler)full-Layton at the end. I've played every Layton game and should expect that all the supernatural crap isn't real and the actual explanation is less believable than it actually being a town that exists in a book. BUT I DIDN'T EXPECT IT. Also loves how it pulls Layton 1-3 together Being a FAKE TOWN that only exists by mass hallucination and power of suggestion. Layton 1- fake town with robots, Layton 2- fake town where everyone is hallucinating Layton 3: fake town that's underneath London somehow. This is secretly the real Layton 4 Also loved how Layton was THE MAN in this game!
There were some pretty gigantic plot holes, but i really had a fun time. I am looking forward to Phoenix Wright (in the past) goes to London for an Unlikely Crossover 2 even more after this.
Wait, are you saying there is to be a sequel?
yes, but it's Sherlock this time

See, that's the gotcha here. In the Ace Attorney universe, supernatural powers are there, it's not a huge stretch for them to make the leap to magic. So the player familiar with both series wouldn't know if the world is playing but Ace Attorney or Layton rules.
So yeah, beat it a few days ago. Oh look! Bonus content! I like how the characters aren't even pretending that this isn't a video game here.
I was disappointed that there weren't more winks and nods at the Layton games, but it looks like the after game content has that covered.
Chelmey pausing at the points where Barton would normally spill all the information cracked me up
