Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP

Anyone heard about this one?

Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP (yes, that's the correct spelling) is an adventure game in the style of Karateka and Out of This World. The developer home page describes it as "A 21st century update to the pioneering works of Miyamoto, Mechner & Chahi." It's being designed specially for the iPad, with iPhone/iPod Touch versions to follow.

The developer is Capybara Games, an outstanding little Canadian company responsible for my favorite Nintendo DS game of all time, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, and some other quality puzzle titles. The level of quality for iPad games is really starting to go up, and this game is just further evidence of that.

Thoughts?

Here's a thought. I've been with my chick on and off since she was sixteen. We are in our 30s now. Does it make me a pedo if I fantasize about her 16 year old self?

I've been keeping an eye on it, as I love Superbrothers' art and Capy makes quality games, but alas, I don't own the machines to play it on.

Here's a nice illustrated editorial on game design by Superbrothers.

I'd be interested if it was coming for a real platform.

Yes, actually. Love Capybara and have been following them and this title for some time now (the second moonlit lake screenshot is my desktop image at work). Really interested in this and especially at the fact that (I think) this game is going to have its own native iPad resolution and not be blown up like it would be if it were just an iPhone app. Looks super gorgeous and the company is pretty cool, too.

It's a shame I don't have an iPad (and missed it, too, the person next to me at work scored one from the Christmas party). Looks great, honestly.

Critter Crunch was a solid puzzler. I'm still waiting for the PSN version of Clash of Heroes.

This game is taking inspiration from the right places, but yeah, not sure I give a crap unless it makes its way onto a non-Apple platform.

Clash of Heroes is really, really good even though no one played it. This looks rad too. I don't have an iPad though, soooo

None of these types of games stay on just one platform. I'm sure it will make its way to PC, XBLA, and PSN eventually.

I'm just happy that the iPad is getting its very own Chahi-style platformer.

I'm intrigued based on any resemblance to OOTW but I don't think it looks that great in those screens. Why is it acceptable for today's 2d games to look so much more cheap and amateurish on average than games 20 years ago? Being budget-priced isn't an excuse.

"Cheap"? I think they look gorgeous, myself. A little self-consciously "16-bit" and pixelated, but I think that is the Superbrothers' style.

I'm especially excited after reading the Superbrothers manifesto on game design that Bacon linked to. Less talk more rock, indeed.

Neo, I think you're just looking at the big-pixel style and missing everything else that's going on. The color usage and environmental design is accomplished as hell. Just because something uses fat pixels doesn't make it inherently cheap and amateurish.

Maybe. I do want to see it in motion. I hate those tree trunks, though. ;)

This looks really nice. iPhone/iPad, though? :|

I somehow missed that when I clicked on it this morning. I do like the walking through water part.

That video looked amazingly boring. I want to like this game but god, that video is dull.

I went to look this up and remembered it's only on iPad right now. Probably won't work on my phone anyway. Oh well.

It won't. The iPhone date is TBD (supposedly only a month). I bought this today but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

I picked this up last night and it's pretty fantastic.

Yes, the game is an audio and visual swirl of incredible. Even the writing and few voices are perfect. Even the credits are cool.

I was going to make an argument here, but given that OoTW was made by one guy, I can't even rightly say it is a budget thing.

That's... what superbrothers's work looks like. He's done work for other big (non-gaming) clients before this game came around that used the same style. Someone saw his work and hired him to build a game that looked like it.

You can not like it all you want, but it's a very deliberate, consistent, and cultivated style that the guy's made a professional career out of. By very definition, it's not amateur.

The art doesn't sell well in screens. In game where you're moving around, and zooming in and out, it looks pretty incredible.

This looks like it's gonna be pretty short. I'm 27% done and I've probably spent about 90 minutes with it.

That said, the game is gorgeous and oozes atmosphere. In terms of sheer gameplay so far there's not a whole lot of meat, I've done a little bit of everything, from the basic sword and board combat to adventure puzzle solving and exploration. I don't think any of these elements will ever get particularly deep, but I am enjoying myself a lot! Also, play with headphones.

this came out for iphone/pod touch last night. i'm enjoying it so far. the music is freaking great.

I'm playing pretty slowly through this but it's pretty great. The device flipping for combat is nice.

The iPad app is now Universal too, which is nice.

I'll play this when it's on another platform.

So this is on Steam now. Six bucks.

I still think the dialogue tries way too hard to be quirky and hip.

I bought it on both. Mostly because the Steam version has the fuckawesome soundtrack included and I can only imagine that it will look great at high resolutions.

I'm an Android user so I enjoy when iOS stuff goes to other platforms.

Played this at PAX, it is super cool.

edit: So far, I am really enjoying this. Only played the first part so far, but man, it is beautiful, and the music is great. Funny too!
