Virtual-On Force - man, what is going on
Lunatic Rave 2!
I acquired this 5GB set of fanmade songs some time ago and after trying it a bit to make sure it all worked I never really thought much of it. Cycling through Red, DD, Gold, Troopers, and Empress was starting to get a bit tired so I decided to put some more time into this program.
The double lanes are wider than I'd like and I really dislike not being able to turn judgment off, but being able to tweak much of the rest of it to my liking has made it really nice. What has really made this more enjoyable for me though is the Nonstop mode and Random Mix with it. The program smartly chooses five songs of within the relatively same area of BPM and integrates them to basically form one long ten minute song - without giving you any warning of what songs you are going to play. That's pretty exciting to me.
If I could figure out how to make a skin that more closely mirrors the PS2 version and eliminates the judgment line I'd be tempted to leave the PS2 IIDXs behind - if it wasn't for niceties like the black charts. And for the fact that the sim files I have for Troopers (I'm busy acquiring the rest now) are definitely quieter than the fanmade songs. That's pretty jarring.
e: Forgot to add - one other thing I really dislike is that the game's default skin has different colors for hold notes. White hold notes are displayed with a slight greenish tinge. What the hell is that. Makes me screw it up all the time.
That sounds awesome. How are the controls? Are you playing in XP with high polling rates or something?
Yeah I have a separate XP machine that I've used for this and mame. I have two Joybox Pros which are supposedly clocked to 1000hz but I don't think it makes any significant difference. LR2 also has a setting to automatically adjust timing on the fly; I'm not quite sure if this ends up where you're constantly chasing your tail by readjusting how you time hits based on the adjustments it makes, but it at least helps it make it all feel like there's not some sort of insurmountable lag as if you're playing the PS2 games on a shitty LCD or something. There's a setting to tell the program how much duration the scratches last and they seem sensitive enough, where it's like playing the 5Key PS1 games with the IIDX KOC in that the turntable lane stays lit well after scratching but it detects everything fine.
I got a serial/PS2 adapter with my Dao table but when I put the serial card into my machine it fucked it all up, and I don't know why. It might have been some conflict with timing on the mobo somewhere because with the card in, frame rates and corresponding audio output was severely staggered and stuttering. Said to hell with it and used the USB boxes since.
Also it has to be said that while some of the fanmade songs are quite good, others are really really bad. Really bad.
I WAS playing Madden 10, but the game is shit, so I stopped. The presentation is lackluster, the gameplay is decent, but the computer really sucks. I was down by 2 with a minute to go, and it kept subbing my best receiver out of the game. In another game, it had one of my players (computer-controlled) called for unnecessary roughness for a major gain, and scored a TD on the next play. The computer had no ITs, no fumbles, no penalties the entire game. It kept doing little shit like that every time I got close. Also, the AI runs out the clock when it's down by 3 with under a minute but throws long when it's up by 7? WTF?
Seriously, I know there are those who defend this franchise, but it's amazing that I had more fun with NFL 2K5 (which I tried again after playing Madden) than a game released on superior hardware five years later. Fuck Madden and fuck EA. This license needs to stop being exclusive already so someone else can make a decent football game.
And the licensed soundtrack sucks.
Trying out some stuff I got recently:
Dragon Quest IX - Haven't played that much of it yet. So far it seems ok but I have a feeling I will need to dump hours into before it picks up.
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Late to the party, got it for Christmas. Really dig it and it is not a game where I feel I would need to take a break from it.
Also playing random games of NBA2k11 and Plants vs. Zombies
Fable 3 is awful. Avoid.
I liked Fable 1 but thought it flawed and actually thought Fable 2 was pretty good. Fable 3 is lazy programming and design all around.
Playin' Mafia 2. Driving's so fucking awful in it. Good thing there's a lot of it!
A Robot Bit Me hooked me up with a copy of Virtual Hydlide (Saturn) for Christmas. It is AWESOMELY cheesy and horrible. I can't put it down!
Fairy armor FTW!
