For my old, old stuff I get those giant tupperware looking bins and put all the items related to a single console inside. They're stackable, too, but this is more for closet storage than ready use at any time. For that shelves are great, or maybe something smallish with drawers.
What? I'd use one of those plastic baskets but they generate static electricity, or at least they seem to with some of the other things I've used them with, so I'm not going to put all of my electronics into one. So the Wicker Man I will be.Quote:

You can have lots of shit and still be organized. I'm currently talking with a carpenter to make some solid pine shelves to cover the length of the wall behind my futon. All My Genesis games will go there, and I'll be able to move the futon under them and have lots of open floor space. There's also a massive pine bookshelf at my job that they're going to to throw out, and I've trying to convince the dean to let me have it. I want it for all my Sega CD and Saturn games, and anything else that's taking up space. The thing is almost seven feet tall and looks awesome.
I tossed everything but Retro Gamer, Sega Visions, Mega Play, and Next Gen. All of it is reference material for my site. RG is in a big tupperware bin in my game room, since I like to read it now and then, and the others are in one of those thin tupperware bins that slide under the bed.Quote:

Good luck on that. My college had a (relatively) small oak bookshelf they were getting rid of and I offered to take it off their hands, there being nothing wrong with it. Fits a good 500 games so far and still tons of room.Quote:

In the closet, I have a pair of shelves, one media tower style and one more traditional, that hold all my console and portable games, as well as larger accessories, like my TE stick. The key here is that my console and portable game collections have shrunken considerably. I probably still have 100+ games in there, but it's not the hundreds and hundreds that it was ten years ago. I've replaced as much as possible digitally: VC, XBLA, Steam, etc. I also buy retro collection so that I can get rid of the originals.
Finally, in the very top of the closet, there's a built in shelf like most newer houses these days. I keep all of my system and big accessory boxes up there, which is a ridiculous sight when I have basically at least one of every system since 1995 up there, with the proud exception of no N64, along with Japanese/American pairs of Xbox, 360s, DCs, etc.
If I had to net the whole thing out in terms of a strategy someone could follow, it would be the following:
- Get rid of every cartridge-based system; replace as many of the games as possible with digital versions or collection discs.
- Replace physical disc-based games with digital versions (typically PC-only but could use XBL On Demand and the PSN releases I suppose).
- Use accessory converters instead of buying eight of everything, e.g. I use my Saturn accessories on my DC too and my PS2 accessories on my PS3 as well.
- Invest in storage of some type. Shelves, cabinets, containers, etc. all will make your use of space better.
edit: I should have mentioned there is a couch on the last, door-less wall.
Josh and Diffusion X had it right - if you haven't played it in 2 years throw it away, give it away or sell it. The only thing I really kept from yesteryear was the n64 with WCW Revenge / Wrestlemania 2000 because beating people up as luchadors was awesome. But I gave those away to my brother, too. It is the best feeling in the world only being surrounded by things you actively enjoy using. It is a waste of time, space and money to upkeep a gaming room littered with things you aren't appreciating - and make no mistake if you aren't playing it you aren't appreciating it. Hoarding is baggage.
The only game of recent I've kept is Mass Effect and Super Street Fighter IV. Because the games data carries over and I find the entire thing fun as hell. Street Fighter IV is just a godly social game to play with friends, too. But I play both of these. If you haven't played it in 2 years get rid of it. Then graduate from 2 years to 1 year. Trade in old games to reduce the cost of new ones.
I've been reducing the amount of DVDs I own now, too. Only TV I really want to watch again. I like Buffy, and I like Firefly, and I like seasons 1 - 3 of The Office. Season 1 & 2 of Dexter (but nothing since). Nothing that actively plays on TV. Get a hard drive - watch online if possible. Soon enough I'm getting a dedicated media PC, ripping this shit to disc and selling it all (then downloading the rest where possible). I only bought Little Miss Sunshine, and Inglorious Basterds Blurays since owning a bluray player. I'll probably get True Grit next.
If you don't use it. Get rid of it.
