My video games are displayed on shelves in the same room as all my movies and all my books. If I need more shelf space, I buy more shelves. It's really not a problem.
Gaming magazines, however, are a headache. Right now they're in media boxes in a closet, but I now that's not a long-term solution.

When these topics devolve into the "clear it out" vrs "preserve it" arguments I always wonder, what do the people who clear out their game collections do with the space?
Are you making all this extra space so you have more room for other things you enjoy more? Like did you clear out the game shelves so you could have room for a better stereo and maybe a nice shelf to hold records?
Or do you just want the empty space? Do you find empty rooms pleasing to the eye? Are you insane and material objects nag at you and tell you to kill your cat?
And why is it always games and movies? Are you people really that boring? Do you do anything else with your time? I don't really think much about the size of my game collection. It is such a small part of any room. My shelves of books easily dwarf it. The wall of amps dwarf it. The 8 foot tall shop shelf full of tools and meters, dwarf it.
I've never seen people care so much about making a space into a void. What is the motivator for this zealous anti-materal wealth?
With movies, it's simply no longer necessary to have a big collection of them. The switchover from DVD to Bluray also had me cut back spending, much like everyone else I think.
With games, I just never hooked any of the old stuff up anymore, so there was no point in keeping it around. Even with current gen stuff, most of the time when I'm done with them, I'm done. Space is somewhat of a concern, but more than anything, it's just getting over the idea of needing to have these shelves upon shelves of movies/games. Also, having a game collection compels me to buy games as opposed to playing them. I could never get over that.
If having a collection is your thing, knock yourself out. Everyone has their hobbies.
I have 2 game setups: one in the living room which is more of an entertainment center and then my collection room. (waiting for the flames now)
In the living room, we have plastic drawers under the sofa which houses a number of things like tools, batteries, etc as well as accessories/controllers/extension cables. We also have 2 ottomans that hold stuff as well. In our condo, we went with custom shelving and wire ties. If you're looking to have more than the modern consoles simultaneously connected then this is the way to go.
I've got 24 consoles, 1 60" plasma, 1 PC, 2 wired switches, 1 wireless router, 1 DVD player, 1 amp, 1 satellite tuner, 1 LD player (LA) with 2 component video selectors and 2 optical audio selectors hooked up in this room. The shelving accomodates wires and the power strips necessary to power the setup. On top fo the shelf (which goes almost to the ceiling), sit all of my various joysticks.
In the collection room, I have 3 arcade CRTs, 1 amp, 2 RGB selectors, 1 MIDI box, 6 consoles, 10 retro PCs and 2 control boxes (super guns) all connected up. The PCs are big enough to hide most of the wires by using cable ties and creatively stacking them up.
isn't there a qualifier on this? Like there is no point in having a big collection....if you invest money into a media center, netflix, back up hard drives, bigger better computers for emulation, etc?Quote:

How many of you that work to lower your game and movie collections have record, book or amp collections? You can copy all those records and cds and sell them. You can cut the binding in your books and run them through a scanner. You can sell all your amps and get a Line6 POD.
You guys do what you want, but I think some of you are being logically dishonest. You don't THINK you need a smaller game collection, you FEEL you do.

I don't like having a lot of games and stuff on display simply because I don't need to see them when I'm not playing them. It's the same reason my tools and cookware aren't adorning my walls. At some point in the very near future, I'll be getting rid of my PC and computer desk in favor of a laptop that can be stowed under my coffee table, and replacing my television with a projector. I really just don't like the look of consumer electronics in general and would prefer to have it visible only when needed. I guess I just like having my living space look like something that's used for more than just media consumption.Quote:
