So I'm looking around my room right now and I'm starting to notice just how fucking much of a mess it is. Having multiple consoles with peripherals for all of them is starting to be a bit crazy. Basically I've got shit sitting everywhere, and it's time to organize. So how do you keep your shit together?
Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Some of it I don't, and I will certainly be purging it when the big clean up happens. But I do need much of it.
I don't have a colossal gaming collection. I have long believed in the idea of trading games in to get other games for cheaper. But I do, for example, have a PS3 (with Eye and 4 controllers & blutooth headset), a 360 (with Kinect and 2 controllers, plus Rock Band peripherals), a PC and a G5, some work related hard ware and speakers + headphones all crammed into one room. I need both consoles for my writing, and I need both PCs for my work. They are all attached to one monitor, so that's ok at least, butt otherwise the room is a fucking nightmare.
I only have out two consoles at a time. Right now it's the 360 and the PS3. Everything else is in the closet. If I feel like playing another system, I'll bring it out to play, but when I'm done it goes back in the closet.
As for the games, most of them are in the closet as well. I'll keep on the shelves games for the two systems that are hooked up because those are the ones I'll most likely play.
Step 1. Buy one of those nice USA metal made shelf kits from walmart or lowes, or what have you
Step 2. Go to your local post office and get a lot of free priority mail boxes.
Step 3. Set up shelf in a storage room.
Step 4. Put games into boxes and put on shelf.
There is no real reason to display every game and console you own, all at one time.
I put all my game discs in a binder. And no retro systems to clutter up the space.
Well, again, the answer is shelves. If it is your private game room you can put in any kind of shelves you want. If you have to share it with someone who wants shit pretty, you can look into cheap crap at IKEA. If it is a shared room with non gamers, look into cabinets with doors so you can close the games off and the room won't overwhelm non gaming guest with how big of a nerd you are.Quote:

I think that's going to be the answer. I want something that I can stuff shit into, yet still be portable enough that if I'm moving I don't have to tear down a wall. I also think I may invest in some kind of wicker basket for all of my controllers.

I use book shelves to organize my games, consoles, guides and magazines. I have older magazines that I keep in storage bins, but I'm seriously thinking about unloading the crap like Ultra Game Players magazine.
For my old, old stuff I get those giant tupperware looking bins and put all the items related to a single console inside. They're stackable, too, but this is more for closet storage than ready use at any time. For that shelves are great, or maybe something smallish with drawers.

You can have lots of shit and still be organized. I'm currently talking with a carpenter to make some solid pine shelves to cover the length of the wall behind my futon. All My Genesis games will go there, and I'll be able to move the futon under them and have lots of open floor space. There's also a massive pine bookshelf at my job that they're going to to throw out, and I've trying to convince the dean to let me have it. I want it for all my Sega CD and Saturn games, and anything else that's taking up space. The thing is almost seven feet tall and looks awesome.
I tossed everything but Retro Gamer, Sega Visions, Mega Play, and Next Gen. All of it is reference material for my site. RG is in a big tupperware bin in my game room, since I like to read it now and then, and the others are in one of those thin tupperware bins that slide under the bed.Quote:

Finally, in the very top of the closet, there's a built in shelf like most newer houses these days. I keep all of my system and big accessory boxes up there, which is a ridiculous sight when I have basically at least one of every system since 1995 up there, with the proud exception of no N64, along with Japanese/American pairs of Xbox, 360s, DCs, etc.
If I had to net the whole thing out in terms of a strategy someone could follow, it would be the following:
- Get rid of every cartridge-based system; replace as many of the games as possible with digital versions or collection discs.
- Replace physical disc-based games with digital versions (typically PC-only but could use XBL On Demand and the PSN releases I suppose).
- Use accessory converters instead of buying eight of everything, e.g. I use my Saturn accessories on my DC too and my PS2 accessories on my PS3 as well.
- Invest in storage of some type. Shelves, cabinets, containers, etc. all will make your use of space better.
edit: I should have mentioned there is a couch on the last, door-less wall.
Josh and Diffusion X had it right - if you haven't played it in 2 years throw it away, give it away or sell it. The only thing I really kept from yesteryear was the n64 with WCW Revenge / Wrestlemania 2000 because beating people up as luchadors was awesome. But I gave those away to my brother, too. It is the best feeling in the world only being surrounded by things you actively enjoy using. It is a waste of time, space and money to upkeep a gaming room littered with things you aren't appreciating - and make no mistake if you aren't playing it you aren't appreciating it. Hoarding is baggage.
The only game of recent I've kept is Mass Effect and Super Street Fighter IV. Because the games data carries over and I find the entire thing fun as hell. Street Fighter IV is just a godly social game to play with friends, too. But I play both of these. If you haven't played it in 2 years get rid of it. Then graduate from 2 years to 1 year. Trade in old games to reduce the cost of new ones.
I've been reducing the amount of DVDs I own now, too. Only TV I really want to watch again. I like Buffy, and I like Firefly, and I like seasons 1 - 3 of The Office. Season 1 & 2 of Dexter (but nothing since). Nothing that actively plays on TV. Get a hard drive - watch online if possible. Soon enough I'm getting a dedicated media PC, ripping this shit to disc and selling it all (then downloading the rest where possible). I only bought Little Miss Sunshine, and Inglorious Basterds Blurays since owning a bluray player. I'll probably get True Grit next.
If you don't use it. Get rid of it.

Keep old stuff in their boxes or one of those Tupperware shelf things. Only keep two systems out at a time. Actually, it was one until I got a PS3.
I've been throwing out a lot of old magazines lately. I used to keep them for nostalgia. Now they're just embarrassing. The remaining magazines are in a tub. Retro Gamer is in my bookshelf.
That wouldn't work for me. I have tons of games I go years without playing but I know I will go back to. They're worth keeping. Two years goes by in an instant. I do get rid of stuff I know I don't want to touch again. I got rid of a shitload of games/systems in 2009.Quote:

It's not just TNL, but people are super super insecure. I'm always reading about techniques to hide game collections, or sad justifications for paying rip-off DD prices because "now my guests won't have to see my embarrassing shelves of video game boxes." Well me personally I don't give a fuck who knows I'm a gamer, but I do care about people thinking I'm a slob.
My video games are displayed on shelves in the same room as all my movies and all my books. If I need more shelf space, I buy more shelves. It's really not a problem.
Gaming magazines, however, are a headache. Right now they're in media boxes in a closet, but I now that's not a long-term solution.

When these topics devolve into the "clear it out" vrs "preserve it" arguments I always wonder, what do the people who clear out their game collections do with the space?
Are you making all this extra space so you have more room for other things you enjoy more? Like did you clear out the game shelves so you could have room for a better stereo and maybe a nice shelf to hold records?
Or do you just want the empty space? Do you find empty rooms pleasing to the eye? Are you insane and material objects nag at you and tell you to kill your cat?
And why is it always games and movies? Are you people really that boring? Do you do anything else with your time? I don't really think much about the size of my game collection. It is such a small part of any room. My shelves of books easily dwarf it. The wall of amps dwarf it. The 8 foot tall shop shelf full of tools and meters, dwarf it.
I've never seen people care so much about making a space into a void. What is the motivator for this zealous anti-materal wealth?
With movies, it's simply no longer necessary to have a big collection of them. The switchover from DVD to Bluray also had me cut back spending, much like everyone else I think.
With games, I just never hooked any of the old stuff up anymore, so there was no point in keeping it around. Even with current gen stuff, most of the time when I'm done with them, I'm done. Space is somewhat of a concern, but more than anything, it's just getting over the idea of needing to have these shelves upon shelves of movies/games. Also, having a game collection compels me to buy games as opposed to playing them. I could never get over that.
If having a collection is your thing, knock yourself out. Everyone has their hobbies.
I have 2 game setups: one in the living room which is more of an entertainment center and then my collection room. (waiting for the flames now)
In the living room, we have plastic drawers under the sofa which houses a number of things like tools, batteries, etc as well as accessories/controllers/extension cables. We also have 2 ottomans that hold stuff as well. In our condo, we went with custom shelving and wire ties. If you're looking to have more than the modern consoles simultaneously connected then this is the way to go.
I've got 24 consoles, 1 60" plasma, 1 PC, 2 wired switches, 1 wireless router, 1 DVD player, 1 amp, 1 satellite tuner, 1 LD player (LA) with 2 component video selectors and 2 optical audio selectors hooked up in this room. The shelving accomodates wires and the power strips necessary to power the setup. On top fo the shelf (which goes almost to the ceiling), sit all of my various joysticks.
In the collection room, I have 3 arcade CRTs, 1 amp, 2 RGB selectors, 1 MIDI box, 6 consoles, 10 retro PCs and 2 control boxes (super guns) all connected up. The PCs are big enough to hide most of the wires by using cable ties and creatively stacking them up.

I don't like having a lot of games and stuff on display simply because I don't need to see them when I'm not playing them. It's the same reason my tools and cookware aren't adorning my walls. At some point in the very near future, I'll be getting rid of my PC and computer desk in favor of a laptop that can be stowed under my coffee table, and replacing my television with a projector. I really just don't like the look of consumer electronics in general and would prefer to have it visible only when needed. I guess I just like having my living space look like something that's used for more than just media consumption.Quote:

I collect books, music related things, antique electronics, and a couple games.
I rarely buy fiction. Most of the books I buy are technical. And on material not easily found online. This is an investment into myself. It increases both my skill and knowledge base.
The fiction that I do own, I will lump in with movies or rpgs. They either have a sentimental attachment or a link to a thought process that is helpful. I'd probably lump related objects into this category as well. Looking at an old toy on a shelf or seeing an old movie might make me think back to some random day in my childhood. It might also remind me of the moment of a story to boost my morale for the day. These things serve to take me out of the current moment and step outside of myself. And/or frame a moment from within another moment.
The music stuff I own is both work and art related. I can work on it to learn skills. I can build new music stuff, to learn skills. These skills in turn can make money. The music made with it is enriching, even if my playing is horrible. As horrible as I am at it, I still enjoy the act. Not to be all art fag, but the music stuff, is like my mind and soul. It is the bread I make and the bread I eat. This covers gear, guitars, records, cds, etc. The records and cds have the added benefit of what I said about fiction. Records not only give back drops to day dreaming, but also have spatial connections in my memory.
tools, well that should be self evident. Fuck, I wish I had more tools. I could never own enough fancy tools. The things I could make. Endless possibilities from tools
Then there is the added benefits of human bonding. I can have people over and play music. I can have people over and watch movies. I can have people over and play multiplayer games. And I can go to people's houses and do the same thing. I can't always do that with backed up media. They might not have anything to play avi files with.
And I buy most of this stuff at lower than the market value. And I know how to flip it. When I went to Europe, $2000-$3000 of my money came from reselling shit I didn't have to own or just dug up.
I get something out of everything I own.
EDIT: I don't know why I bothered to give an honest reply. A lot of this comes down to the type of memory people have and how dominant each form is. Like Spatial or temporal. Where one person may see simple objects another might see information and potential for other task. Which I guess is why people who don't think like I do on this issue, bug me. It is like watching someone throw resources away. Like they are shooting themselves in the foot because they are limiting the potential around them.

The mindset on its own isn't bad. If anything it is very healthy and increases chances of survival. It is intelligent resource management. And it may be anecdotal but I've never met a self made rich person who didn't have this outlook. They got where they are in life by being thrifty and seeing the potential in resources and people.
But yeah, that is how hoarders think. They can't get rid of things because they see potential in it. But that is just how life is. The difference between a character flaw and strength is mostly happenstance. The same thing that might make person easily addicted to drugs might also make them a really dedicated worker. The same thing that might make someone an aloof cold asshole might make them really good at working alone.
Let me put it this way and give an example.
My kitchen Aid mixer.
My dad got my mother a kitchen aid mixer for their first wedding anniversary. It is an American made unit as well as made by Hobart, the large industrial food equipment manufacturer. It looks a lot like the unit sold at Walmart but is made of better components.
Like 5 years ago it finally died. My mom tinkered with it, never got it to work, and was going to give it away. My dad snatched up, put it in storage and got her a new one.
Two years ago I asked my mom what she did with it and she said she gave it away. I was shocked. Then my dad said he put it up. And I asked if I could have it if I could fix it. He agreed. I went up into his shop and got it out, opened it up, and cleaned up the insides, and it has worked ever since.
So what did I get from this "hoarding" ?
I saved 200$
I could potentially make 50 - 100 if I resold it.
I am able to cook better and more food.
Every time I use it I think of my mother and father.
I gained skills in working with electric motors.
I have something of my mothers, that I can pass on to my children, and maybe even pass on some skills on how to fix it.
But according to the logic of some of you, it should have been thrown/given away.

And you can use a lot of the same arguments against keeping it. It was broken. You don't need broken things. Neither of them could fix it, and probably never were going to be able to fix it. It was big and heavy. It took up space. It was probably in the way. He'd already gotten her a new one to replace it in the jobs it did.
Both kinds of resource management can be destructive. IMO, it is just as bad to be wasteful as it is to hoard things you don't need, use, or really want. The person who throws sell-able shit in the garbage is just as stupid as the person who has so many magazines in his house he can't get around.
Being wasteful is wrong. That goes for your living space AND the shit you've spent money on.
I would have kept the mixer but given the kid away.
I would have used the mixer to blend the kid.

With cash and credit I can get anything I want. I get more enjoyment out of building my social site and trying to play the ukele than a thousand games sitting around I'll never play. I collect books, music related things, antique electronics, and a couple games.
I rarely buy fiction. Most of the books I buy are technical. And on material not easily found online. This is an investment into myself. It increases both my skill and knowledge base.
The fiction that I do own, I will lump in with movies or rpgs. They either have a sentimental attachment or a link to a thought process that is helpful. I'd probably lump related objects into this category as well. Looking at an old toy on a shelf or seeing an old movie might make me think back to some random day in my childhood. It might also remind me of the moment of a story to boost my morale for the day. These things serve to take me out of the current moment and step outside of myself. And/or frame a moment from within another moment.
The music stuff I own is both work and art related. I can work on it to learn skills. I can build new music stuff, to learn skills. These skills in turn can make money. The music made with it is enriching, even if my playing is horrible. As horrible as I am at it, I still enjoy the act. Not to be all art fag, but the music stuff, is like my mind and soul. It is the bread I make and the bread I eat. This covers gear, guitars, records, cds, etc. The records and cds have the added benefit of what I said about fiction. Records not only give back drops to day dreaming, but also have spatial connections in my memory.
tools, well that should be self evident. Fuck, I wish I had more tools. I could never own enough fancy tools. The things I could make. Endless possibilities from tools
Then there is the added benefits of human bonding. I can have people over and play music. I can have people over and watch movies. I can have people over and play multiplayer games. And I can go to people's houses and do the same thing. I can't always do that with backed up media. They might not have anything to play avi files with.
And I buy most of this stuff at lower than the market value. And I know how to flip it. When I went to Europe, $2000-$3000 of my money came from reselling shit I didn't have to own or just dug up.
I get something out of everything I own.
