This looks really cool, going to get on it this week.
To me playing this is like looking at paintings that incredible artists did as children, it might be interesting but it has value only because of when it happened. If this came out on PC as an indie game I'm sure we'd all hate the shit out of it, which isn't because it's retro; look at some of the current 2D indie games that use basic 8bit style but are still super fun.
That being said while I'm really not enjoying this as a game I am enjoying the history lesson, I hope that makes sense. It's a good choice for perspective, but I hope we don't have more like this.
I think the vast majority would probably play it for a minute and not play it again (which is different than hating it), while others would manage to get into it.
The learning curve for this game is ridiculously steep by modern standards, and not exactly gentle even by standards of the day. But underneath that, the freedom and experimentation is genuinely fun, even today.
I definitely don't expect you to judge this game by modern standards, but if you can make it to the end, I have a feeling you'll have some fun with it, it's just about getting over the hump.Quote:

I wanted to pick a game that everyone would have available to them, that they probably haven't played and definitely should, but I know it's definitely a tough one to get into.
That said, I think it's much MORE accessible than Elite and a lot of other comparable games from that time.
It really is steep. I've been resisting using any documentation and it's just unbelievable. I gotta actually download some printouts.
That's why I think it's a good pick. It may not be the most accessible game but anyone with an interest in gaming history should try it. I can see how it might be quite the "culture shock" to people that grew up primarily with console and arcade games, though. I find that's the often the case with '80s computer games that are much simpler than this, even linear 2d stuff.Quote:

I really want to get into this game, the concept is so cool, but my god the learning curve is killing me. The controls are just so much, and man, I don't know. Going to keep trying. I never thought I'd have these kinds of troubles, as this game seems like something I should enjoy.
Ok, I made this my first Game Club attempt and have to say I failed. It just reminds me of why I didn't play a lot of these kinds of games back then- loads of ambition coupled with an inability to make it accessible. I'm impressed with what it tried to do, especially on the tech of the time, but just don't want to play it.
