I generally do commissions when I can because it promotes my work, gives someone something they like, and gives me extra income. I know that this may not be directly related to expression as some see it but if it's making my day and the buyer's, great. In this instance I figured - why not do something I already do (commissions), do it based around something I'm excited for (MvC3), and promote the idea somewhere where I don't normally pitch for it, but I know a few folks like the work and a community relevant to the idea (here)?

Saying its panhandling is like saying a contractor who fixes roofs on his weekends is a whore. Both can be true (it is a form of prostitution in a very roundabout way), but neither is a charity case.

In hindsight, yeah, the wording is bad. My main focus was making this about "Hey guys, hyped for MvC3? Buy custom MvC3 art!" or somesuch. Not "wah I want MvC3 you should but it for me"

I mean yeah I want MvC3 and yeah I'd probably use this as a reason to get it...but bad pitching is bad.

JM, i'm ashamed of you. Was it not Hero who pointed out the Megaman thing, which we all spent hours on for free? We all just wanted to have fun, but we all also wanted to get in that book. How is offering drawings for money any worse? It's relevant to the cause, and it's cheap drawings.
Bacon, if you actually drew stuff instead of playing videogames and generally wasting your time, you could do this too. I'd be proud to have Bacon McShig drawings on my art wall, but... it'll never happen.
