Since I want MvC3, but it would be irresponsible for me to spend my small budget on it (and I don't think I'm getting it from the girl), I have a proposition:

• Like my work? $5 gets you a cool head sketch of a MvC3 character of your choosing!
• Love my work? $10 gets you a body sketch!
• Love me? $20 gets you a color bust
• Stalking me? $40 gets you a full body, full color character.

Art is about self promotion. Nobody is saying you have to buy any of his or my stuff, but the option is there. Don't like it? Stay out of the thread. It's actually a surprisingly easy concept.

Making art is about self expression. Getting your art in front of people and making money is about self promotion. Selling it and creating it are not the same endeavor. To say that being a hermit and making great art will bring you success because the art will bring money by itself is a totally ignorant notion. You can make great art and still have to work a shit job you hate if you are not getting it out there. Some people would like to make a living doing what they love. If that requires a little self promotion and hustle, who are you to say that is an artistically compromised position to be in? What do you do for a living? How happy are you?

I spent $50 on a comic artist sketch. That's the only art outside of Fury's logo I have bought this decade.

The thought of you buying my stuff has never crossed my mind. I just was wondering how much art you buy directly from artists that you don't know. If your place is decorated in art from all over the place, cool. But if FB is the only artist you buy stuff from then my point still stands.

As he stared at the completed drawing his mind flitted back to the exact moment the request had come through: the sudden butterflies in his stomach, the perfect image that had appeared in his mind's eye instantly, as if it had always existed. Now, duplicated in perfect detail in front of him, it still gave off that same feeling of energy and life he had felt that first day; a vibrancy betraying the drawing's inanimate construction and transforming it into so much more.

In the drawing, Max was laying down on a beach chair, enjoying a warm summer day on a lush coast in the Savage Land. He was a strikingly handsome man even in his late 40s, his body chiseled into near perfection through hardships endured in a painful, tragic past. Rivulets of perspiration wound their way around his muscles, bulging even in this relaxed state, drawing a suggestive road map of masculine anatomy leading towards the red and purple Speedo he wore, leaving nothing to the imagination. I generally do commissions when I can because it promotes my work, gives someone something they like, and gives me extra income. I know that this may not be directly related to expression as some see it but if it's making my day and the buyer's, great. In this instance I figured - why not do something I already do (commissions), do it based around something I'm excited for (MvC3), and promote the idea somewhere where I don't normally pitch for it, but I know a few folks like the work and a community relevant to the idea (here)?

Saying its panhandling is like saying a contractor who fixes roofs on his weekends is a whore. Both can be true (it is a form of prostitution in a very roundabout way), but neither is a charity case.

In hindsight, yeah, the wording is bad. My main focus was making this about "Hey guys, hyped for MvC3? Buy custom MvC3 art!" or somesuch. Not "wah I want MvC3 you should but it for me"

I mean yeah I want MvC3 and yeah I'd probably use this as a reason to get it...but bad pitching is bad.

I draw nothing because I have other work that I actually get paid for. Maybe I'd draw if I got paid to? I wouldn't

I used to get paid to draw and design, but I still worked on commissions, personal projects, etc outside of those. Now that I work in Customer Service for a game studio, I'm trying to get over to the creative team, showing my stuff, getting to work on some design on the clock..but none of that means I have to stop making work outside of that, or to be selling/commissioning.
