part of that is our natural state. We as animals stay children longer than any other animal. It is why we have so little body hair compared to other mammals. It is also why we are able to learn new skills for most of our lives.

But you are probably talking about why people don't become "responsible red white and blue, adults"

Thats pretty easy, little perceived payoff.

We grew up in the 80s. There was a ton of shit invented for youth culture. Toys, games, tv channels, restaurants. And all of it is pretty cheap, easy to understand, low skill requires, low responsibility, etc.

You are essentially choosing between a low risk, low responsibility, heavy pay offs for selfishness lifestyle, vrs high risk, high responsibility, no pay offs for selfishness lifestyle.

Shit, just look at the basic purchases. You live alone or in an apartment with friends, you buy a shitty car, an entertainment center, and you pay rent. If you're an "adult" you have to buy a house or take a loan out on a house. You probably need a good, maybe new, vehicle. If you have kids, well shit, there is all that money and responsibility.

Being an "adult" is just a lot of money and responsibility. And we live in culture that makes being an adult look and sound horrible and being a kid or selfish sound great. Ignoring shit like neck beard toy collectors, or "gamers" this is still true. Look at shows like Sex in the City. Are those characters "adults" ? Some of them are, and their lives suck. The character that is married with a kid has a shitty life.


We make being an adult look like a bad investment.

Y'know what? I'm gonna call upon Advocate, who grew up in the Northeast and lived for a while here in beautiful North Carolina, to clarify just what these cultural barriers are that make written communication with these alien beings who speak the same tongue so difficult.
