Radiant Historia - Official Thread

I couldn't find a thread of this on GD, so I guess this will do. :)

Is anyone playing this? I'm only two hours in, but so far I really love it. The main character is pretty awesome. He's not too chatty and he only talks when he has something vital to say (on that note, the localization is very well-written).

The 3 by 3 grid mechanic in battles is fun, too. Pushing and reeling multiple foes into the same tile to hit them all at once is pretty satisfying. That and enemies being on-screen and it not being random is nice for once, too.

The music is also by Yoko Shimomura and it's pretty good! I don't mind Kingdom Hearts, but it's nice to see her in other games, too.

I like it, but SOMEONE took it from me so i can't play it.

Now that's just mean.

The bit i played reminded me of a whole bunch of games i really liked, like Final Fantasy VI with Legend of Mana music with Xenogears undertones, and even a little bit of SaGa Frontier.

What it doesn't remind me of at all was Radiata Stories. From original reports i was under the impression that this was the unofficial prequel. but. it's not.

Radiata Stories is pretty rad, but all the other games you mentioned are even radder.

I bought this, but it feels like an awful lot of work to actually open it and put it in the DS, so I haven't played it yet.

On a serious note, from the first two hours of this game it's amazing. The combat is nice, quick, and decently engaging. The characters are entirely likeable, particularly the main character who is probably the most enjoyable main character in a JRPG in years. And everything I hear is that the game gets even better as it goes on. If you have a DS and want a JRPG to play, this seems like the best one available.

There's the outer cardboard box that holds the game and CD. Then the DS game box itself is probably wrapped in plastic inside. Once you have that off, you have to pryyyyyyyyy the game card out of its housing. Sometimes they resist, then snap out suddenly and fly off. Finally, my DS Slot1 has some loose pins or something and it often takes several ejects, re-insertions, and jiggles to get it to read a game.

It's just so much easier to continue playing whatever's already in there (the dull as dirt DQVI I think).

Compass's brain is just rapidly deteriorating. Nothing out of the norms here.

Back on the game, it gets really good once you hit Chapter's 3 or 4'ish (apparently). I'm close to beating Chapter 2 on both realities, so I should see how much better it gets from that point.

And so far, it's really good. Stocke is a great character, not a wimp or useless. I like eet.

You make it sound like I enjoy the series far more than I actually do (now), but that's okay. I'll roll with the f-chan punches (but to be fair, I did like 4's combat, so you can have that).

Back on gaming talk, I've been pretty busy so I only reached Chapter 3 of both Alternate and Standard Histories. How about you guys?

i kept trying to play it right before bed time and only made it 10 minutes at a time. so i went back to Dragon Quest VI. It's a much better bed time game. It seems like you actually have to pay attention in Radiant Historia.

FYI, Atlus has second print coming in the middle of April. The first run was pretty much gone in two weeks.

That's good to hear, it's a really great game (and perhaps my favourite RPG on the DS).

I'm at Chapter 6, so I'm nearing the end, but I went back to other chapters to do all the side-quests. Sidequests in a time-travelling game are pretty awesome, because I technically can't really miss anything.

I've got to say that difficulty-wise, the game is pretty fair. You don't get an abundance of money, so you have to plan out your equipment. That and the game spikes considerably in difficulty at Chapter 4, but it calms down afterwards.

What makes this game good?

To be Brief: The characters are great, the battle system is pretty fun and engaging, I think the pacing in this game is excellent, you never have to grind and the characters that are underleveled get decent bonus experience so they keep up and are still useful. The story has a fairly unique gimmick and is well used to that extent. As Rocca said, you can't miss anything, you can always go back to anything and to me that's great. The music complements the game really well, and the plot does have a decent sense of mystery, particularly in the beginning. A note about the game which may give up something that's not entirely apparent As usual though, I feel JRPGs foreshadow things too early and too obviously

The bad things about the game is the sprites are kinda ugly and reused often, the animation is a little weak at times, and certain enemies you just wish they'd die faster than they do. Protip though, magic is usually going to be your best damage in this game later on, while physical attacks are great for moving the enemies around and building up combos to increase magic damage.

Playing this. It starts out kind of good and then explodes to awesome. I like the sprites. They're very 16-bitty and have a lot of charm.

I love this game forever.

The YOU LET AHT DIE ending is making me upset.

The MARCO KILLS EVERYONE ending is the best.

It's weird to be playing a DS game again, it's been forever since I've fired up the XL. I think this is my second-to-last DS game, and once I snag Ghost Trick ($15 at Amazon, which I wish I'd noticed when I ordered Historia) I'm probably done.

After I finish DQ9 back to etrian odyessy 2, then after that maybe mega man star force 3.

Yeah, it will be years before I clear my DS backlog. I have like 60 unfinished games and still need to buy probably 30.

So by "years" I mean "forever."

I ought to devote a thread to clearing out my DS backlog.

I've got to finish this game, SMT Strange Journey, Dark Spire, Rondo of Swords, the main campaign in Advance Wars: Days of Ruin...

I play my DS all the time. I love it.

I love my DS but hardly use it at all any more. I've played as much as I want of the games I currently own, even though there are a few incomplete RPGs in there. The problem is that there's been a near-vacuum of anything worth playing on it for the last year or so. Combine that with not getting a lot of time for portable gaming any more and it's been months since I've touched it. I'm really enjoying using it again, though.

Everything you typed is wrong, James. DS is the only system worth playing since PS2 stopped getting games.

I originally bought the big blue brick DS but could never stand playing the fucking thing, even though I had a nice pile of great games for it. I recently picked up a black DS Lite on ebay and find playing it 1000x more enjoyable...now I play it all the time, and damn, do I have a lot of fantastic titles to catch up on. Got Radiant Historia on the mail from Amazon the other day, can't wait to try it.

The DSiXL is what makes me happy. It's a bit too big to be super-comfortable, but I use it mostly in bed rather than on the go so it works out fine. Those big screens just feel luxurious.

And yeah, enjoying the hell out of Radiant Historia so far. Admitted I'm barely started, but I like what I've seen. This is going to get some solid attention from me.

The DSi XL is comically large. It's just so sturdy and well-made that it totally won me over, even if the large pixel look isn't always the best. Chrono Trigger looks so good on this thing.

I still need to buy a XL. I play the ds so often, I really just need to get one before it gets hard to find.

Haha, you really should though, it's screen is marvelously bright and gives off the same wow factor I had when I first picked up a DS Lite on Japanese launch. It's nothing I would consider portable, but for relaxing at home on a sofa and playing some Chrono Trigger or SMT, it's fricking awesome.

2D games look marvelous on it because of all the colors and pixels I didn't notice the first time. Again, kind of how I felt between the DS Phat and Lite...

Like I said in the haul thread, Radioshack is clearing out their DSi and XLs. I've picked up 3 DSi's for $80 a piece and 6 XLs for $100 a pop.

None in my area unfortunately. :(

The few Dsiware games I love are still firmly affixed to it and the chubby stylus is great for doodling on Flipnote and Art Academy.

I bought an XL yesterday. Trying to force myself into it, but... it's not really working. The pixels are ridiculous. Each the size of a small pebble. The +Control Pad hurts my frail thumb...

I've compared six games between my new XL and my trusty Lite. Every time, the game looked and felt SO MUCH BETTER on the Lite, it wasn't even close.

Total opposite for me. Everything I've played on the XL has looked and felt better just for being on a bigger machine. I don't mind the pixel-y look at all, and the overall experience of the bigger screens just makes it feel bigger and richer somehow.

I hated how big, bulky, and awkward the DS Phat was. No way I can get into a system like the XL that's even bigger than that fucking thing. I love love love the DS Lite.

Oh yeah, I found a copy of this a while back. Good game! In related news, GOD I love my new DS XL. I should have bought one ages ago. I don't even know if I can bring myself to buy a 3DS without an XL version.

Dsi biggie is a far better system than 3DS. Not covered in Christmas lights or annoying slide switches.

It's classy as fuck and we all love it, now someone sell me Radiant Historia for like $30.

I'd say wait for Devil Survivor 2 to release and see if they whip up a reprint around that time, it's not likely to jump much further in price.

Yeah, there's no way I'm paying over $100 for it. I'll wait and see after this shit calms down.

I think it was the best jRPG of 2011 and I wouldn't recommend dropping $80 for it.

No game in of itself is worth $80, exclusions being boards, super rare old games for collectors, yadayada.

I'm with Thief, I was completely engrossed in Radiant Historia for 60 hours and loved it from start to finish, but $80 is too much. Would say it's worth $45 or so (that I am not selling).

I bought Dragon Force once for $76. I think it was worth it, but I wouldn't pay that much for another game again.

I got Radiant Historia when it first came out for $24. Worth every penny. But $80+? Fuck that shit.

I bought some kind of Radiant game for $90, but i turned it around for $200 a few years later.

I bought Dragon Quest V used for $35, then a few months later Amazon sold it for as low as $15. Fuck.

This game went on sale five thousand times. NO EXCUSES.

My only problem is that closer to the end, the battles get really tough and aren't worth suffering through. The story and characters are still pretty cool, though. I'd like to see another game by the same development team with a bigger budget and a little more time.

No, duh, i buy it all on vinyl unless i CAN'T. Fuck cd's, that's my last option. Music is much easier to copy than say, DSiWare or Xbox Live games. For every obscure release, there are 12 people with a torrent on some secret downloading site. That one GameArts game on WiiWare that i was slightly interested in that i was going to get one day was quietly taken down, and GUESS WHAT. I AIN'T EVER GONNA BE ABLE TO GET THAT SHIT, unless someone sells me their Wii with it on there already.

There are several, but Joust on Xbox360 is the best example. You can still find download cards occasionally, but once those are gone, THAT'S IT. Just wanted to chime in that Psychonauts was pulled from the XBox Originals page on XBLA too. If my copy is ever deleted, that's it.
