"Are Whites Racially Opressed?" a.k.a. "How Hard Can CNN Troll?"

There's no way this is serious.

Whenever I read articles like this, or hear views like this expressed, it makes me wonder how people can be so historically ignorant. It's as though media, organizations and scholarships benefiting minorities came into existence in a vacuum. As though everyone was perfectly equal in the past, and then one day BET came to be, forever ruining our racial harmony.

This also comes after the German Chancellor declared multiculturalism a failure. Though... that's a different story altogether.

Biases certainly exist against whites, typically aimed at white males, but it's not new and it's not special to white folks--all groups have haters. Grow some balls and stop identifying yourself by the color of your skin.

I do actually agree with this. However, I am constantly reminded (subtlety and otherwise) of the colour of my skin, the implication being that it is different than what is considered "normal," and I'm sure many others feel the same way. Sometimes it's hard not to identify yourself like that.

For the record, I consider myself just Canadian.

The way we choose to identify ourselves is based largely on how we are identified by others. I know this was meant as an oversimplification, but it borders on an impossibility in this country. You'd need everyone to change.

The cause is just the positive images of white people against negative images of minorities that conditions us all to associate these things, and the result is just a more favorable intuitive impression of a white person upon meeting them than a non-white. I don't know how to make it much simpler for you than that, but it makes it easier for whites to get a job, get a particular girl, get promoted, hell get a lighter sentence from a judge...

You're a professional. If you grew your hair long, and went to a job interview, do you think it would help you? Why or why not? No one believes your hair has anything to do with your qualifications. It's like that, people just develop associations that color their impressions of people, and these biases skew overwhelmingly in favor of whites.

This is easier. For how long have blacks been portrayed as inferior to whites? Even in this country it's only been abolished recently. I think it's because it's the only thing that get through your thick skin. You don't care about animals, women, or individuals, but at least you take pride in your people.

It has nothing to do with pride. It has to do with watching whites pass right by you even though they don't do shit to earn it. Simply being white already gives off a positive impression. I'm dealing with this at work now.

Canada has a lot of ethnic minorities that are openly welcomed. Sometimes I do wonder if these sub-cultures identify themselves more with culture of origin than being Canadian. This actually came up during the Beijing games when a lot of Chinese-Canadians identified themselves as Chinese. "Finally China is going to show the world what we're capable of!" is what the consensus amongst our Chinese colleagues. I noted that they weren't Chinese they were Canadian and everyone reluctantly agreed. Probably just pride in culture more than anything so I didn't read too mcuh in to it. Initially the sentiment was marginalized, though. But what does it matter to me? They can do what they want.

Yeah, like I said in my initial reply to MarkRyan, these things exist, but they work out in favor of whites overwhelmingly on average.

I've definitely had a lot of people assume I had much better opportunities or have/come from a much better economic situation than I do because of my race and the way I talk. And yet I still generally find it advantageous to present myself in a way that doesn't make the fact that I grew up poor in the inner city obvious because I find the negative assumptions would outweigh the "he must have worked harder" positive ones.

For the record, I'm definitely not playing a victim card on the growing up poor thing. Like I said, I think I had ample opportunities, just talking about perceptions.

Bite me. I don't understand racism in business at all (I know this is larger than business, but let's focus there). It's nothing short of stupid to hire/promote a less qualified candidate, whether that is due to racism or affirmative action. I suppose there could be some gray area around the image Frog mentioned in terms of its effect on qualifications. For example, attractive people may really make better sales reps. But there are many, many jobs where it doesn't mean shit, as long as they carry themselves in a professional manner and have the skills necessary.

It can be a difficult thing to see from the outside. It's something you notice over time rather than from big confrontations. The first time you don't get a job you thought you deserved, you go "Oh, well this shit happens," but the 15th time it becomes more apparent. Like Ramon said, this is a lifelong experience, it adds up.

The tough thing is getting an objective view though. No one wants to concede that they didn't have the qualifications, so they may blame something obvious, like race or gender. That's why these discussions are so difficult. You'd almost need access to all the resumes/interviews to know for sure what the root cause was.

My boss knows I'll be the first to say I'm not qualified for the position. When I was interviewed for a Public Relations position in my company, I told them, "I have no idea how to do PR. I'd love to learn so I'll be an associate to help the PR guy but I can't accept this position." I didn't take the job and work until I failed. But this last chance, I should have gotten the job.

I don't know your personal work situation so don't take this as criticism of you, but consider that for every white dude promoted past a non-white, there are nine other white dudes that also didn't get promoted. The white guys that don't get promoted, the guys that work the shit jobs and don't get recognized, have to come up with other reasons for their situation. My opinion is that they are generally excuses.

I am a big believer in the individual's power to change his situation. The only thing separating you from executives is that they went for it, they didn't accept less, they aligned themselves with the right people and made sacrifices you weren't willing to make. Those aren't necessarily positive differences, I'm not suggesting everyone should strive to be an exec, but my point is that the difference isn't that these guys were born executives, it's not because of the schools they went to. The greatest privilege of rich white dudes is expectations. People tend to live up to their expectations. Or live down to them.

I have a problem with this right here. I'm no debutant or what have you but every single executive I've met with the exception of maybe 1% (and even this is generous) have all come from the Ivys and all knew each other or of each other. It really is who you know from the beginning. Even the venture capitalists keep close ties with these people from the time they are teenagers.

I once met up with my dad (blue collar guy) who was working in a condo on Central Park East. $12 million place, the works. While looking around I saw that his dad was CEO of Citi back in the day, he went to Yale and Wharton, and met up with some other upper crust WASP to get the baby factory running. No doubt he thinks the system is just fine and his success is due to hard work and merit, but come on. This guy's success in life, his admission to Wharton, his fancy pants condo, was guaranteed the day he popped out of his mom's vagina.

It's more who you know than anything. But that's a sales / accounts management game, too. You have to know someone for them to know you're even a candidate.

Like I worked at a pharmaceutical warehouse where the crew working inventory, maintainance, and doing hands-on work were 90% male, and to balance this out they had an office staff that was 100% female. It's ironic that this was to maintain a pretext that they didn't have discriminatory hiring practices because it couldn't be more obvious that they did.

It is indeed a class thing more or less. There are complicated reasons minorities have problems obtaining positions of power and wealth, but it boils down to money/power. See the differences in public rich white kid schools vs. public poor black kid schools for a further understanding.

Following your generality, "sounding white" really means speaking proper English. That isn't and shouldn't be a race thing. I know plenty of people who are of different races that speak proper English. Heck, it's the second language for many of them, but they speak it properly. And that is and should be a job requirement for the vast majority of jobs. When we give people a pass for the most basic of skills, that's a whole different kind of racism in my opinion.

While we're bringing male/female into this, I'm dying to know why there are so few women in music production. In over 10 years working in the field I have met one girl mixing front of house and monitors, and one girl doing tech duties. There are women on stage over the place. Why not behind the scenes?

I've only ever had two female sound guys. One in Austin, and one in Chicago.

It's probably because girls are dumb, but I can't say for sure.

Also the accent. It's how words are pronounced, not just which words are used. I didn't really mean grammar, it's saying the g's at the end of ing words and saying your r's at the end of words and things like that.

Although, I have to say that for most white people I meet who have a "black" accent, it's an affectation. They're rarely ever from a black neighborhood. But again, I'm mostly talking about perception, not reality.

This is always amusing to me. For some reason White people separate themselves less than Hispanic people, despite the fact that in our backgrounds we actually speak different languages. I strongly identify myself as French, but I am a bit of a minority in the issue.

My guess is that in a few generations, Hispanics will largely do the same. Whites have been around in this country a lot longer, and separated quite strongly early on. Today's Mexicans were yesterday's Germans, Irish, Poles, anyone but Anglo-Saxons basically. It's just kind of how this country works (and it's a good thing IMO).
