The irony here is that the fear is what's stopping people from advancing enough to make the tech safer. The people who want to build reactors with modern technology are right. There are issues that need to be resolved (storing depleted pellets, for example). If Japan had shut down its reactors and rebuilt as they were scheduled there is a very real chance this whole thing could have been averted. Even being ancient technology the plant survived one of the most intense earthquakes in modern times. Imagine if it had been build in 2000 onward.
And more people are killed in the process of getting energy from cole than all of the nuclear fallout ever. Nuclear just has a big scary question mark over it.
