Shit, I forgot to look for Crime Alley.
Anyone else feel like Asylum was the better game? I felt more Batman-y fighting those hulking beast, bane, and croc in the first game than the bosses in AC.
Could they have made Catwoman hotter?
Hey, let's pick one thing we see him write and nitpick that, but when he follows with:
Let's ignore that one and go after the first thing again. How's that for stopping anything? You missed your opportune stopping-him moment a while ago.

On topic (ish), what are people using to get the most out of PC Arkham City? The PhsyX stuff is looking spiffy, but is that still requiring top-shelf videocards or is the barrier to entry getting lower?
If it's like Arkham Asylum, I wouldn't recommend setting PhysX on max unless you have two video cards. But normal PhysX should work fine if you have anything approaching a modern card.
That reminds me that I need to get around to getting a new power supply so that I can run two cards over winter vacation.
Finished this and loved everything about it. The story ruled, the end was one of the best and most satisfying game endings I can remember. There are a ton of villians and every single one of them is integrated so well. I'm around 55% done with a ton of stuff left to do. I've barely touched the challenge rooms and I'll keep come back over time to get 100%. Terrifying and cracking the skulls of criminals as Batman rules.
IT'S THE BAT!
You made me spit my Colt .45 all over my keyboard.
Billy Dee Williams is on his way to your house get me an autograph
He has altered the deal, pray he doesn't alter it further.

Be sure to visit the Calendar Man today.
holy fucking shit are the predator challenges harder (medals-wise) on this one
I don't even think I can do the one in stranges' tower office because there's nowhere to perch and study guard movements & make attack plans :(
This run is kind of a sham (you only get one smoke pellet), but the beginning strategy is sound; Go immediately to the first guy on the balcony, freeze him when the disruptor guy is near him, disruptor guy will step out on the balcony, REC him into the frozen guy, another guy will show up, cluster freeze them, sonic batarang the disruptor guy. Now you've got 2 medals and use of the radar.
I haven't even tried the Predator challenges yet, still going for 3 medals for bats and cats in the combat rooms.
Every three steps outside triggers like 29 side quests. It's a little overwhelming at first!
It calms down once you get some stuff done.
yeah don't worry too much about the side quests getting in your way, they kinda pile it on at the start of the game but you'll eventually get to where it won't say anything and you won't have any goddamn idea where to go next during them
the only one you should really do asap is the AR training for the grapple boost upgrade because you're basically going to need that for a lot of the timed stuff, luckily they are fairly easy and straightforward
For all you honest achievement hunters be sure to visit Calendar Man today (he's in the basement of the court house)!
Friend is letting me borrow it. This thing is overwhelming! Not even an hour in and all the story beats get interrupted by lots of side missions popping up.
Also, it's crazy the amount of button combinations needed to do things. Like RT to crouch, then A to remove a grate, but just A to open it. Or LT does something different dependent on the gadget equipped, each of which have their own unique commands. Its annoying to see those prompts each time to do something, but it also feels a little needed, since there's just so many different commands.
I haven't played a lot, but it already feels like Asylum was a bit better. Maybe more focused. I liked how that one played out like Metroid, offering a lot to see, but in a very directed way. City just drops you in and says go - which is also a lot of fun. But a little more chaotic.
Hero: Hating games that everybody else loves since 2010.
You make good points about the control scheme though.
Pushing two buttons at once is complicated? I can't think of anything that requires more that isn't an attack combo. The LT is the quickfire for most gadgets. The game teaches you how to use everything as you go, once you learn it, you don't even have to think about it. There's some alt fire stuff that isn't vital (like the rear batarang attack throw), but that's easy to forget while still having its uses to players (same with quickfire gadgets for combat, but again, that's two buttons at once territory and necessary for the highest combat scores). I'm pretty sure you can turn off the prompts when you're ready. It's not made by Nintendo so you're not forced to wait through a paused screen and a scrolling text box every time the same action comes up.
Yeah, nothing is complicated about the controls at all. For all secondary weapons, left trigger to activate, right bumper and/or bumper to use. The rest like Rumpy said isn't necessary at all and can be ignored. I think I'm about halfway through and the only reason it took me a bit of time to adjust was because I played Dark Souls for 80 hours before I jumped into this and those controls were burned into my skull, and once I broke old habits everything controls really well.
I do agree though that the open-endedness is a bit overwhelming and unfocused in comparison to AA. It just seems like challenges for the sake of challenges, and not that they have any purpose. The sheer number of riddler challenges is kind of insane, and even though it doesn't get in the way of anything, annoying since ever 10 steps there's a massive question mark and mini puzzle to figure out no matter where you are. Not a huge complaint since it's more content they added to the game, but something that could have been integrated a bit more elegantly.
The deal is I like it! Just not as much as Asylum so far. That one had better...flow, I guess. This one is nuts in how it just lets the leash off - both for better and worse in different ways.
For the controls, I'll start thinking of it as you guys are saying - one trigger to quickfire/aim and another for sub/main. The complication I was getting related more to how the game describes each combination for each gadget as its own unique action, rather than the way you guys describe it.
I think the complaints are totally valid, both things feel a little overwhelming at first and we're all super video game guys. Imagine a noob getting tossed into the game; definitely too much.
But it's still really good once you get over that.
Yeah, I said much the same as Hero when I first got it. The city is super-overwhelming when you first get thrown into it and there's a million side missions being thrown at you right away.
By the end of the game, though, I knew it like the back of my hand.
I generally don't like the Rockstar way of locking away massive cuts of an open-world game off until you hit the right story beat, but I don't think it's a faulty premise altogether, they just go overboard on it. I do think it's a good idea to cordon off a small slice for maybe the first hour or two to get folks acclamated, but after that point, tear the lid off and let 'em go nuts in the whole sandbox, don't stagger more area unlocks over 20-hour increments.
I hate that the city is shaped like an upside down U.
It's only to make Zsazz phone calls really annoying
Fly fat ass, fly! Easy to get to those phones.
turn that frown upside down, once you get the hang of flying through the city via grappleboosting and divebombing you'll have that dumb phone shit done in no time
I beat the game, and I never missed a phone call - I just think the U shape of the city is retarded.
Played 20 minutes of this last night and really enjoyed it. I never finished AA, maybe I should go finish that up but probably not.
Free Batman Inc Skin
That's the link for the 360 version, PSN has it too.
This game is so much more focused than I thought it would be based on you guys
Yeah side missions pop up, but they're really in the background unless you want them to be your focus. The city is also nice, but in five hours I already know where about every major structure is because compared to say GTA this shit feels small; but when you cladd in the large indoor areas and sewers ot does get much larger. Maybe its just Skyrim talking.
Thats not to say this game is bad though, its fucking INCREDIBLE.
It took me a few hours to get into this game, but once I got into gliding around and using the tools in combat it got pretty awesome. I'm only like 30% done. It's better than Asylum IMO.
I also haven't gotten all the side missions activated yet, I hope I'm not missing anything.
I tried this for a bit. The fast grapple thing is AWESOME.
Weird shit is happening to the Steam version. Mysterious 130 MB patch completely broke savegames. The games are still on my HDD but the game doesn't detect them in the normal location. I'm not sure where to put them to fix it.
Also, Games For Windows Live no longer even initializes in the Steam version. The in-game button is still there but pressing it doesn't do a thing.
I really hope this was just a botched attempt at removing GFWL permanently because oh god it sucks.
edit: Looks like it was an unfinished preliminary patch. It's been rolled back and my save is working again. GFWL is back as well, sighhhhhhh
Nope. I did several of them after the credits rolled.
I remember reading some people claiming some stuff locked out but now I'm reading that it's bullshit and that you can do everything.
Finished it, felt really short. Although I only went through the story-essential stuff and didn't have the Catwoman Buy This Bullshit Pass. Does it make much of a difference?
Once I got used to moving about the city and ignoring all the constant cries for subquesting, I was digging it. The Challenge missions are addicting too. Although I still like Asylum more. Something about it was more cohesive, and being stuck in the Asylum and all added to the mood. Plus the premise of one guy being stuck in the crazy house isn't as far fetched as some citywide referendum to turn a chunk of city into a concentration camp.
Also, City kinda pokes holes in its own logic One inmate questions out loud to another "if this is a prison and they don't want us out, why do they keep giving us guns and weapons?" Good question!
How the hell did you not follow the story? Shit was not that complicated.
I just got to the protocol 10 stuff and without getting into spoilers he basicially just set up a situation where extreme force would be approved of by society based on what the situation would look like to an outsider. Made perfect sense.
No, that's not the explanation. Strange sets up Arkham City and yes, Protocol 10 is his end game, but the events that happen in the game were largely not at his command. Not sure how you missed what was happening, but you needed to pay more attention to Joker.
There is a group of the location "take a picture" Riddler puzzles that flesh out the events of AC being made too. Brilliant story when all is said and done. I just remembered I haven't listened to all the interviews yet. Need to visit Calendar Man tomorrow too.
Why?
Calendar Man tells a story if you visit him on holidays. Also, there's an achievement if you see all of them in one year.
Yep, today's story about Calendar Man's "Christmas Special" was definitely interesting.
Also, such a neat job by Rocksteady that the inmates' post-game banter reflects the events of the game/ending. They did an amazing job with this game.
The Gotham Inc costume is pretty sweet.
Is there a good video or anything explaining the flying mechanics. I'm already not very good at video games, and it's not like the game seems to be helping at all. AR Training isn't training, it's just "do this shit get a prize" but I don't know how to do it.
It's like pilotwings, takes a gentle thumb. You may want to try inverting your controls for flight if it feels really awkward for you.
I guess the controller rumbles when you are supposed to pull up. I figured it out. Getting the super grapple from beating the first 4 AR missions makes getting to all of the ringing phones way easier.
Yeah I see it this way too. Strange wanted the place to look like a madhouse and the only way to stop it from breaking out was to go to city hall and say zomg I messed up and now we need to nuke em all. He was proud of the way it all proceeded and was counting down to the implementation of Protocol 10 the whole time. I still havnt seen all the Riddler stuff that was mentioned before but I figured that this is what he wanted from Arkham Asylum.
Picked up the PC Collector's Edition while I was in Singapore last week and struggling with installing this POS. Using the setup.exe, I get about 75% done and it crashes as the log says it can't find a file. I've tried multiple times and it's always a different file. Reading the AC forum, I tried using the game.msi to install by putting the necessary dlls into windows\sys32 and it gets to 50% with the same problem. Seems like a ton of people have this problem with the only solution being to pirate the game.
Anyone else have similar issues and any advice?
(It's definitely not the performance of my PC as I am running an i7 990X, 16MB RAM, Radeon HD 5870 2GB and have 4TB of space. Batman AA runs at max settings with an average FPS of 55 in benchmark.)
Does the retail version use Steamworks? If so, you could punch in the cd key on Steam and just download it. Not exactly an ideal solution, but better than nothing.
It doesn't activate through Steam from what I can tell but I did read that someone did try to register on Steam and it just started up the same retail installer since it's GFWL. The problem is that this CE was only distributed in small retail areas like South Africa and Singapore and includes the Catwoman DLC as part of the install (there is no code) so a bit afraid that I'll lose that through Steam but might as well try when I get home.
I heard City was not GFWL and just Steamworks, only Asylum was GFWL. I could be wrong though. I know that Alan Wake is shockingly going to not be GFWL.
Asylum: GFWL only, available on Steam but without Steamworks integration
City comes in two versions:
Everywhere but Steam: GFWL only
On Steam: GFWL and Steamworks (used for Steam achievements and cloud saving*).
What this means in practice is that you can NOT buy a retail copy and register it on Steam. Same goes for other digital retailers.
*I don't believe cloud saving stops the savegame deletion bug that's present in lots of GFWL games. Arkham City's Steam release is kind of a clusterfuck of redundant DRM.
Wrong. The Steam version of Arkham City uses both Steamworks and GFWL.
And this post looks really stupid after epmode's explanation.
Yah, my code doesn't work on Steam.
WTF WB, get this shit working!!! Looked at my Disc 1 and it has some weird corroding on the inside of the disc which may be the cause. Everytime I try to install the game, it reduces my PC to a standstill but looking at the resource manager, there are no significant buildups on the CPU, memory or hard disk accesses, everything is near idle. Yet, it still takes 3-4 hours to give me an error message.
PS: I love how the AC forums' community manager denies the existence of this CE....
This is probably the worst major game release on PC since The Saboteur.
can't you just make an iso from the disc and install from that? or does it literally have DREs
failing that, grab a bootleg version and just install with your cd key or whatever
Latter is the final resort for me.
Tried to do the former and found that there is actually a physical defect in the disc, corrosion within the disc!
Attempting to get WB to send me a replacement but they're all, "Go back to the retailer"...they totally ignored the part where I bought it in a different country.
Game of the Year Edition announced.
http://youtu.be/1m7aOkmr7T8
All DLC to date, the final expansion pack featuring Harley Quinn (which will be up to purchase online for those who already own the game) and a voucher for the digital version of the recently released Batman: Year One animated feature. May 29th.
Nice, glad I waited.
Are you fucking kidding me with this cover?
holy shit is that real
10 OUT OF 10
I wonder how such atrocious things like that get greenlit. I know that covers are essentially shelf-space advertising, but that's just not compelling at all. And for some reason crap like that is becoming commonplace. At this point a stark, simple image with no bullshit publisher icons and just the title would stand out more, in addition to being 100x better in the first place.
The thing is, it's almost like this is an inside joke. Arkham Asylum's GOTY edition had similar packaging and it was laughed about for ages. This one is actually worse.
OTOH, advertising/packaging is about getting people to talk about your product (even if it is in a negative light).
I will probably buy this on Steam so whatever, but man that is fucking terrible.
That box art is amazing. Still doesn't top the Konami's Best Dawn of Sorrow box though.
Or My Hero for Sega Master System.
They should just slap on original box art Mega Man just to round it out.
This is $14.99 on Steam this weekend. The DLC is also 50% off, so this is probably a better deal than waiting for the GotY edition.
Fired this up on PC today and ran the benchmark. The PC port (with DX11 enabled) takes a healthy shit on the console version, holy crap.
It was, and I do. It was rad.
The first game is also very achievement whore friendly if you want to play it multiple times (and buy it multiple times). There are two xbox versions and two PC versions, all with separate listings so you can get a total of 4k Gamerscore. With that said, I just own the regular edition on PC and I'm good since while I have a PhysX card, when I enable it the game does not run very well so I need to upgrade down the road.
Arkham City also counts as a different game on PC.
It is, but I signed into my xbox and it showed up under recently played.
So they released a GOTY edition within a few months and now there's additional DLC that you would have to get on top of the GOTY addition?
What the fuck is going on here?
No.
Good on them though. The cover art is still, not even art.
I'm really digging Harley's Revenge so far. Takes place a few weeks after the events in City (and as such assumes you played through the game, no tutorials) when Harley starts making problems. The story starts with you as Robin, going to look for Batman as he hasn't been seen since going in after Harley 2 days earlier.
It's more awesome Arkham gameplay so if you dug the game, I'm sure you'll like this too.
It's super short, wait till it's on sale. Sucks because I was having a blast, I didn't want it to end in 2 hours.
23 hours, did some of the overly ridiculous amount of Riddler trophies and what I could of the sidequests that all lack any kind of clue to their next objective. Overall pretty fucking awesome, though it was glitchier than Saints Row the Third for some weird reason. I had a cutscene with no voices, reached a quest objective faster than the game wanted so it trapped Batman in mid-air against an invisible wall until snipers killed him, and almost made the otherwise totally amazing Mr. Freeze fight unbeatable by flat out not reacting to some of the ways he's supposed to get hurt. Hard is definitely more so than the laughably easy first game, though the challenge only kicked in during the many fights where they just lock Batman in a room and have waves of enemies continuously spawn.
Also: whoever wrote Catwoman's lines needs to never be allowed to write a woman character ever again. Constant cringe-inducing terrible attempts at sexuality that read like a 10-year-old boy writing Cinemax porn dialogue. "This kitten always gets her cream"? No, fuck you.
But really, it's awesome. Give me a sequel with a larger Gotham and lets me ride the Batmobile (and Batwing) around and it'll be the most perfect Batman product that has ever existed.
