What a fun message board this would be if it worked the way some of you wanted.

My friend borrowed my phone once. Sure hope he didn't like, take it to some bad place or something. Wait does this shit hold ANY water in court. Like even a bit.
A murder was convicted with it. I forget the specifics. I think the murder stole the phone and they used this shit to find his home and connect him to the crime. Like he killed the person in a park, stole the phone, used it at his place, then pawned it.
I don't think this'll lead to some Orwellian nightmare-world, but I think we're rapidly approaching marketing overload. I already have. I don't like being constantly asked to buy something. Most of us get a bit shitty at the Gamestop clerks when we buy something and then they launch into the slew of preorder-magazine-trade horseshit. Just let me buy the thing I want with some dignity and self respect. I think it also leads to a watering down of anything potentially awesome. Focus groups, etc. I know you just bought this DVD, but here's a bunch of other shit we think you should get. I mean, we invested money in it and you should buy it since we did that for you. And, by the way, how bout a coke while you watch the movie? I just find it irresponsible and abhorrent.
It's part of the reason none of my dishes have names. It's not Big Jim's Huge-Ass Cuban. It's: Cuban: roast pork, ham, brown mustard, garlic-mayo, pickle. Not: Succulent roast pork with country cured ham, slathered in garlic mayonnaise and spicy deli-style mustard flanked by pickle fillets.
Just tell me what it is and I'll decide if it sounds like something I'm interested in.
Well, ideally, they would also keep track of how you react to advertising and eventually figure out that you aren't going to respond to certain kinds of advertising and stop wasting resources on you.
ideally.
But, what is most likely going to happen, is like you said, they are going to barrage you with ads and marketing like email spammers do because it only takes one purchase to make it worthwhile to bug you.
On a side note, I've always found it interesting that creative minds are the ones that always find modern advertising and marketing the most irritating. I think creative people pay more attention to the world around them, because you have to be if you want to figure out how to use things around you to be creative.
Facebook is actually getting really good at this. They're responsible for the only 2 web ads I've ever clicked, and both of them resulted in a purchase. You need to be proactive in what you give Facebook, but yeah, helpful advertising is helpful.
I have no issue with icarusfall not wanting to be tracked or marketed toward. I just truly and honestly believe that the shift towards a more publicly facing world has benefits that far, far outweigh potential negative applications.
I don't think the US is mature enough for there to be little or no privacy.
We still have a lot of people who believe in legislating morality. And some people that believe it is ok to kill or abuse people they do not agree with.
I think people will end up getting hurt if everyone's business is made public.
Jitterbug might be the last refuge for those who cherish their privacy.
