Well, Josh is right. Complaining is fun sometimes.
Yeah, I can't get any good games going either. I'm going to be playing NFS and Call of Duty until EA gets their shit straight.
I sold my BF4 for $40. Going towards Mario.
I think Contrast is good, but I can understand if people don't like it.
I think Knack is terrible, and I do not understand how people would like it.
Contrast is super simple, short, maybe boring. But I think it's obvious what they were going for. They do what they wanted, add a couple little things, and then it ends. There's a little story that is done well enough. I think it succeeds at what it was trying to do.
Knack is super simple, long, and feels wrong in many ways. Gameplay is slow, and you have a very limited number of moves that never really change or feel adequate. Levels are just paths between tiny rooms you have to clear to progress. (playing on normal) you die in basically 2 hits, because that was the only way to make combat meaningful at all (instant respawn, but you have to replay some of the level). Story is really badly presented, but that's opinion I guess. The game seems way too long for what it is.
I haven't beaten the game yet, so I was trying to reserve judgement until I was done, but I would love to have an honest discussion with someone who thinks this is a good game. There are a lot of details I didn't mention which aren't as important, but are also negatives. (game flow, menus, random loot, social aspects, etc).
I guess the graphics are good. Maybe its impressive that you're made of a lot of separate little pieces (I can only assume that this was the bold point on the design doc, to showcase the power of the system).
Battlefield has a massive 256MB update on 360 today so maybe there's one for the P4 troubles too.
I genuinely enjoyed Knack. I agree that it's super simple, and the levels are pretty much just paths between tiny rooms. I can't argue with any of that. However, I find it's simple game structure and move list to be very welcome. It's a nice throwback to when games were simpler, you had one or two buttons, and you just bashed your way through a game. Basically, it feels more like a Double Dragon game to me, than a platformer. Not every game has to have a humongous move set and realistic environments that sprawl on for miles, in order to be fun. Knack is just a simple beat 'em up, with solid enough play mechanics that kept me invested until the very end. It's not really a super long game either. I got my PS4 on Friday, and I was finished with the game on Sunday.
I also disagree that the story was badly presented. This game is pretty much the closest thing we have to playing through a CGI animated film. My nephew remarked that it reminded him of playing through "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs", and I can see that comparison. Plus, the graphics, once you get passed the gray corridors of the opening level have there moments that are rather stunning. While some of the game looks average, their are instances that far surpass anything the PS3 can do.
I just think there are a lot of people hating on Knack, because it doesn't fit into today's gamers' preconceptions of what makes a game awesome. If you like brawlers or feel like playing something that feels like a throwback to the Dreamcast era arcade port, type of title, then you should enjoy this. In fact, thinking about the level layouts, this feels closer to a beat em up version of Cannon Spike than a platformer. Sure, if you go in expecting this to be a Mario platforming game, then it sucks ass. For what it is though, it's pretty damn good at it. I had an absolute blast playing through this game solo, and then replaying it co-op with my nephew. This is by far the favorite of the launch titles amongst everyone in my family. We all absolutely loathed Killzone. Overall, I'd say Knack is a solid 8 out of 10.
I never want to play Knack after reading that.
