VR adds something (getting real tired of the word "immersion", but what can you do?) to the experience that simply wasn't there before. 3D made things go "pop!" for a short time before you forgot it was there. The benefits of VR infuse the end result constantly in ways that directly effect the experience at all times. 3D looks neat.
VR's big weakness- it's exclusionary. The person in the headset is in there alone. It's the one major hurdle I haven't seen anyone addressing.
