Deserving Reboots

Some games were ahead of technology's time, some were great ideas poorly executed, and some just need to come back. With so many sequels and reboots being put out, what game really deserve The Treatment.

Skygunner - this was an amazing game buried under an unplayable frame rate. With the horsepower of modern consoles we could get this the way it should have played all along. It'd be amazing.

Omega Boost - a good game in its own right, but again, they were trying to do something on the ps1 that shouldn't gave been attempted till at least the ps2.

Zone of the Enders - no explanation needed. If you don't want a new one of these, fuck you.

I fucking LOVE Skygunner. Recently I tried it both on PS3 (thought maybe the system wouldn't have the frame rate issues) and Emulators (same idea) and neither gave me the results I wanted. I have to assume that it's something in the coding to make it run on the PS2 hardware that just can't be circumvented by more horsepower. I would kill for a properly done HD update: I don't even need a new game, just crank up the resolution, throw in some better textures and a more detailed city and crank it up to 60FPS. Then release it on XBLA.

Blast Corps.

It's also be pretty awesome to have a version of Shadow of the Colossus where the main enemy wasn't the fucking camera. Same deal with Mario 64.

Strongly agreed with ZoE, I loved that game and on today's systems it could be amazing.

I've said it before but I would love love LOVE to see Killer Instinct get the same kind of treatment they gave Street Fighter.

Maniac Mansion needs more sequels.

I'd really like to see a super-detailed crazy gory arcade update of Space Gun.

Namco (or somebody) should take another crack at Weapon Lord; a grittier more Frazetta-y Soul Calibur thing.

Spot for NES needs an XBLA update. Just because.

I'd like an updated version of Burning Rangers, with dual analog and modern, HD visuals. They don't even have to make it a sequel, just remake the first game and make it downloadable or a budget retail release.

I didn't get a sense Burning Rangers was that great the first time out.

It was a fun and different concept at the time, and it was enjoyable, but the hardware really held it back. You can practically hear the Saturn groaning and huffing as you play.

I picked up G-Darius on the cheap a few weeks back and got to thinking that it was probably one of the best horizontal shooters of its time. I just looked it up, besides that they DID kinda resurrect it on the PSP in 2009 with Darius Burst and then adapted it to arcades in 2010, but from what I've seen only in Japan. It would be a nice deviation from the cave style bullet hell shooters, and I really, really liked the branching paths, gnarly fish bosses and capturing mechanic. MOAR pls.

Thank you smart ass, but I wasn't asking how or where to input it. I didn't exactly know what unlocking that means for performance on the PS3.

As a side note, you still get slow down when you use fireworks on a big group or the action gets intense. Thanks for wasting my time and being a dick about it.

I'd love to see something done with the Space Channel 5 series. Maybe not a rigid sequel in terms of gameplay, but some kind of game set in that universe. Maybe a musical third person shooter or something.

GunValkyrie was also a totally great game that would be even better on modern hardware, and maybe some concessions to modern control conventions. Like a more aerial Vanquish.

So you would diagnose that basing the third game in space, instead of maybe making a sequel that actually resembled the concept and setting of the series prior, was actually a natural progression and not a total non-sequitur?

(Granted, either way it would have probably still had the signature jank-ass archaic shooting controls that only the Japanese can deliver.)

Still, a third person shooter about murdering dinosaurs? This is not some fundamentally unpalatable concept, it could certainly be rad if done right.

IIRC you still have to go to the settings afterwards and actually turn on Uniform for it to take effect.

Yet another one I tried emulating recently, it does not do well.

Plays fine on PS3 and such, but I wanted to clean it up something beautiful and that didn't work out.

I would love to see a new Techromancer with detailed, destructible environments and decent netcode.

Magic Carpet remake would also be cool.

There is a pop up before you can even start playing telling you that all you've done is unlock variable or uniform as options, so yes I went and turned it on.

When you turn on uniform the game looks like dog shit, losing about half it's vertical lines. Overall it actually feels like runs at a slightly slower frame rate the entire time. Both Variable and Uniform suffer the same slowdown when there are multiple groups of enemies or large airships doing lots of things.

Chu Chu Rocket would love pointer controls and online play. Straight remake 'cause I don't trust those guys to do something new.

I would love a remake of Soul Reaver 1&2 as one game with all the trappings of current hardware. An updated version of Blood Omen would be great too. That way I could finally get through the damn game for once and not have to deal with the major loading issues.

Phantom Dust HD. If I ran a development company with deep pockets, that would be one of my pet projects.

I'd also develop Chu Chu Rocket XBLA and Samba De Amigo: Kinect Edition.

Sounds like something isn't working right on the PS3, I'll check it later. On the PS2 it was a ridiculous boost in framerate at the cost of the game having a dogshit resolution (which also meant some fights were harder because I couldn't what the fuck I was aiming at). It was also a code added in by Atlus when they imported the game, it wasn't part of Sony's original release.

I would love to see a reboot of Iron Tank, I'd play the hell out of that.

The frame rate boost is probably gobbled up by the additional upscaling.

Wing Commander on the new systems would be amazing. The advances in cutscene CGI would make the game even better. Hand it to Blizzard and the game would eventually come out in 10 years ... give or take.

Decent - even though I had motion sickness when it came out. I couldn't deny that it seemed fun.

Battlesphere tried it with the Alone Against the Empire mode, but it could still be so much better (given the gimpy Jaguar hardware). I think what needs to be preserved in an update is the RTS-lite elements of risk/reward in terms of protecting your home base while being on the offensive. I thought it was amazing at the time and I don't recall any other space combat game (besides BS' AAtE mode) even attempted anything like it.

Warping into a sector in the middle of a galactic battle was way way ahead of its time.

Solaris was an interesting offshoot of it but I never could get too far in that game. The difficulty was just brutal.

Turok 2 really did do a lot of shit well. Enemy design and AI, challenge, huge levels, variable hit locations, riding a triceratops with artillery cannons- all that. It's just that I have to wonder if they ever actually tried it on an actual N64 when they made it.

Tomba, the style of game was just completely passé on the PSX but would be welcomed today.

Powerstone, why has this not happened? It seems like a natural fit for today.

A programming robot type of game like Carnage Heart would kick ass too.

A lot of the JSR guys are still at Sega working on Japanese-exclusive sports games. They COULD do the right thing, but they wouldn't. Like I mentioned before they were going to do one on Wii a while back and they were farming it out to Kuju Entertainment of all people.

One that got a good reboot is Alltynex. This is a doujin FM-Towns shmup with good gameplay, even if it's a little rough graphically. What came of it was Alltynex Second- despite the name it's not a sequel, but rather a reboot done with 3D graphics. The stages' titles are the same (Attack on Zoldyzant Base, The biting cold wind, etc). You have the same basic weapons- the main shot, a power laser, a lock-on laser, and a sword. The lasers will deplete your weapon power if overused. There is a score chaining mechanic brought in from the original, and also a new multiplier system for sword kills.

Some that deserve it?

Time Crisis 1: Re-port both the arcade game and the PS1 Kantaris mission to HD. Add a TC4 style scoring system, while also offering a Time Attack mode to play TC1 like the original.

Crisis Zone: Port the arcade CZ and the PS2 game (PS2 Crisis Zone is more of a "Black Label" version than a port) to PS3. Get the screen flicker out of the PS2 version, since PS3 can use Guncon 3 or Move.

Marble Madness: Just bring out the unreleased 1991 sequel with HD graphics. Throw in the original MM also.

Galaxy Force: Add a view change button as well as another selectable ship that can roll 360 degrees and fly upside down, similar to Strike Fighter.

Strike Fighter: OK, this is After Burner III. But hold your boos- the Sega CD version is a terrible port of a good arcade game.

Shinobi: Go back to a 2.5D format, not the full 3D that the PS2 one is.

Power Drift: The undulating tracks in PD are awesome especially considering it's done with 2D scaling sprites. It looks more like a 1994 game than a 1988 one. Redo it with 3D versions of the old courses and add five more. Add unlockable character and car design customizations, as well as alternate taunts.

Super Aleste: One of the best vertical shmups on SNES. No explanation needed, just try it.

Viewpoint: A new version with realtime rendered 3D graphics. Aicom is sadly defunct, but there's got to be someone else out there that can do it right.

Ys IV: Mask of the Sun: Redo it to have the playstyle of Napishtim or Felghana.

I definitely like the Clap Hanz games (Hot Shots Tennis is good, too), but the Camelot/Nintendo RPG hybrid approach was really something special.

It's really some bullshit that the Mutant League series hasn't been resurrected for an XBLA/PSN game or something. Tongue-in-cheek sports games with Gears-style ultraviolence would sell like nuts if done well.

It doesn't even have to be Mutant League. We're basically talking about taking the NFL Blitz/Speedball 2 arcade style of sport game and using a bunch of monsters and such. EA's not doing it but it's weird that nobody else has.

Actually maybe I would rather EA not do it, their arcade stuff has been mostly horrendous.

Yeah, I think people would be way more open to non-licensed teams if the game was something totally out there like that, because it's not even a possibility that the NFL would sign off on it.

Whereas with Blitz: The League and Backbreaker where it's just football with regular-ass humans (over the top though it may be), people just totally ignore 'em if they can't land that license.

Seconded. AFAIR, the guy promised Atari Games not to copy it in exchange for servicing on the machine. WB Games are the rights owners now IINM... Atari Games is dead. But anyway, someone tried to buy the game from him and he said $40K for both machines. A group scrounged up $20K within a week, and he then withdrew the offer- saying he quoted this bullshit price thinking that the other guy and his friends couldn't come up with the cash.

If I were him at this point in time, I'd release the ROMS for MAME users- even if the cabs were not for sale.

Too bad we got Guardians of the Hood (BLAAAAAAARK!) instead of this. WB should put a port out on XBLA/PSN. Controller feedback would add a bit to MM2, especially when your marble takes a hard drop or gets bumped by the enemy.

Interesting story. He is pretty lucky that he got that thing together. At one of my previous employers, I was able to part together a few things. And I literally had to save pcbs from garbage bins to do it.
