I wish the spiky dude would just hand the microphone to the creative director and go back to his cell phone counter at Best Buy.
All this talk about the Blood Dragon made me remember I didn't have much time to put into Far Cry 3 on PC after I got it for Christmas. Now I remember why. I've got a trackball, not a mouse, and it doesn't have a scroll wheel. There's a thread on how to fix this at Ubi's forums, but it's stupid that I'd have to go to that much trouble to re-bind a key. I'd forgotten how bad the PC port of Far Cry 3 is, not only for the keybinding functions but also the amazingly terrible menu system.
James
I play it with a controller, looks amazing and runs well. No terribleness here.
I guess he saying that if you don't use a gamepad, a scroll wheel is required. I used one too and agree with everything you said. Turned a couple things to medium and get a constant 60 FPS. Glorious
That's not the only interface fuckup. Rebind the use key and suddenly you won't be able to exit vehicles.
Whenever I think about playing an FPS with a controller, the children's rhyme "I eat my peas with honey" runs through my head.
James
You can't play Quake III or that new RotT with a pad, but you can certainly play FarCry.
Speaking of which, does anyone on TNL want to start playing Q3 again? I need to get used to KB/M again if I want to play the new RotT
I can't play the game and have a good time. That's the point. I wouldn't be bitching about it if I could. I'm unhappy with Ubisoft because the only control method I've ever felt comfortable playing FPSes with isn't an option here due to their half-assed port job.
James
Based on what evidence? Have you seen an article on this, or gotten some hands-on time? Everything I've seen on the remake looks like big stupid fun. I'm not trying to be snarky here, I honestly don't get this statement. Got anything to back it up?
James
The old RoTT was the worst game.
:(
It has some shitty level design for sure.
I liked ROTT and I'll totally get this but it was a shitty game. I have forever missed the variety of wacky weapons that never seemed to happen in any other FPS since, like the wall of fire and drunk missiles that would leave little skeletons behind. But as I recall, the best part of ROTT was putting in all various codes to make weird stuff happen and try out all the weapons, and not so much actually playing through it.
I've been playing farcry with a pad too and i have no complaints. This isn't a twitchy shooter so it translates to pad play just fine, and my couch beats my computer chair for immersive games like this.
If the developer created the game around gamepad play, and the PC port has shitty mapping features they obviously spent no time on, then you play with the gamepad.
Seems like it's worked out for everyone else.
Good for everyone else? FPS with gamepad isn't fun. It's annoying. Do not want. No thanks. I get that Ubisoft got paid, so the person losing out is me, but it happens sometimes. I'm writing it off as a loss and walking away.
James
I go back and forth with Borderlands 2 between M+K and gamepad, sometimes there are just a grillion buttons (Loot/activate, Grenade, Special Skill, sprint, melee).
That's such a weird thing to say. I understand feeling incredibly limited trying to play Quake or UT with a gamepad, but those were clearly designed around the m+kb (or even trackball I guess?). So I take it you hated on GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, TimeSplitters, Halo, etc. back when they were released? What about modern first person games like even more Halo, Resistance, Skyrim, etc.? You're missing out on some good games because of your weird, arbitrary rule. I'd suggest revising it.
Does FarCry 3 take advantage of analog motion for stealth, etc?
I put up with Goldeneye because of when it came out. I didn't have much of an opinion yet but it was one of the games that helped form it. As for the rest, if they aren't on PC I don't care. If I don't have the precision aiming granted by a mouse/trackball, it's not as fun. It's not a rule, it's a preference, and whenever I decide to give another shot to working around it I end up annoyed at the control scheme.
I don't mind the digital movement speed, by the way. Stealth/walk/run is fine by me.
James
I remember when I felt that way like 10 years ago. Then I forced myself to play through a couple games and got over it.
For competitive or super fast stuff like this ROTT remake, yeah, a controller can't begin to keep up with mouse precision. However, for almost all singleplayer/co-op games these days it doesn't even begin to matter.
I was over it about 45 minutes into TimeSplitters. And I was playing Counterstrike on the college LAN regularly at the time so it's not like I wasn't accustomed to the intricacies of mouse and keyboard control.
I can see why nerds were pissed about it in 2001. It's 2013 though, seriously. Games like FC3, Halo, etc. are designed around pad play and they play great. Enjoy or whine, who the hell chooses whine?
You could also choose to just play other games that actually have sane input options.
Playing a FPS with a gamepad is like playing a lightgun shooter with gamepad. It's doable, but it's a huge compromise.
Not if the game is designed for it, which modern FPS' usually are. If classic FPS' are like lightgun games than modern FPS' are like rail shooters such as S&P and Space Harrier.
They've been slowed down and kludged out with aim assist, but they'd still control better with a proper pointing device.
S&P and Space Harrier would control better with a light gun or mouse, but they still work just fine with a controller.
Not when the people who are making the game are sitting at their desk testing it out using a gamepad as the primary input device. The game was designed around it from the start. It's stupid to say that the input device used by the creators during its design is not the correct one.
Unless it's waggle.
Eh, DKCR was awesome as fuck-all even with the waggle. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to playing it on 3DS though.
I've been attempting to hold strong against the controller on PC movement for years but I usually just give up in the name of immersion.
But really, when you look at how much aim-assist goes into these games I don't think the "It's designed around it!" argument holds up. It's always (or should always be) more satisfying to do it yourself when you're perfectly capable with a mouse (or something equally precise that Valve is working on?)
I haven't tried FarCry 3 so I can't really attest to that game specifically. I know some games, like the old Turok ones, feel like SHIT with a m/kb because of the way they were designed. It really depends on how the game was made.
For games with moving crosshairs, I could see that being a problem.
Otherwise, the objectively better input method is the correct one. What the designers used is irrelevant.
But its not objectively better for this game if everyone playing with kb+mouse is complaining about it while most of the pad users are satisfied.
All Ubi had to do was not be completely incompetent at key bindings, a feature so basic that Doom 1 lets you do it, and there'd be no complaints from anywhere. Quit making excuses for Ubisoft sucking at PC.
James
I literally cannot use a m+k to play videogames.
Mirror's Edge is about 100x better on a pad. More tactile.
I never even tried the m&kb controls when I played it on PC.
I hated farcry 2, so i skipped farcry 3. Still dont really want to play it, but blood dragon looks badass. should i pick up FC3 to at least get familier with the game.
With a keyboard and mouse, I can access all necessary inputs simultaneously. There's no need to ever take my hand off of the aiming or moving controls. With a pad, you have to stop walking to use the dpad or stop aiming to use the face buttons. Of course I'd rather use an analog stick than keys for movement, but most pc games automatically associate mouse look with digital movement, so js&m controls aren't generally an option.
I don't think it's unreasonable to expect modern pc games to have support for all common input devices.
Yea FC2 was awful. This game is the shit though.
One thing that seriously mars FC2 for me is that jammed gun bullshit. Same goes for the malaria. During a heated gunbattle, when one of the above two happens... DAMN IT! Now it seems Ubisoft got the message. FC3 has the good parts of 2, minus the problems. FC3's Deus Ex HR style skill building is a good feature.
I've now swapped out the F1 for the MS16. MS16 jobs in fire rate compared to the F1, but the damage and accuracy make up for it.
So Blood Dragon is out and its a fucking blast so far. But you all knew I'd say that so carry on and wait till it's on sale to buy it.
I just got this email from AMD
Buying that Bioshock Infinite + Tomb Raider voucher off ebay for $50 was the best decision I've EVER MADE.Quote:
Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon is now available in the Never Settle Reloaded promotion!
There’s even more good news for those of you that have already redeemed a code: we’re giving you a FREE COPY of Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon in the email below to say thank you for supporting AMD Radeon™ Graphics!
Got that email too! Never expected it...awesome! I never tried out FarCry3 but Blood Dragon runs very well on "ultra" on my pc. (I bought a Radeon 7850 two months ago that came with Bioshock, Tomb Raider and that god awful new 3D Mark)
The FC3: Blood Dragon launch trailer is fantastic:
So it's not just DLC? Full game price? What's happening?
15 bucks, out now. Shorter game
I did all the collectibles and garrisons already. Haven't touched the story missions. For $15 I think I put about 5-6 hours in already. Good stuff.
I think I like the idea of it more than I'd like to play what I'm seeing in the trailer, but I like that they've made it.
I suggest playing Blood Dragon naked from the waist down because, if rocking slacks, you will undoubtedly jizz in your pants. I've ruined 3 pairs of Dockers.
I might buy this tonight since the demo was really fun, the screen tearing still bothers me quite a bit but it's still pretty playable.
400/400. Was good. Could be so much more if a sequel is made. Please make this happen.
or maybe the joke would get old?
I liked the original soundtrack but they would have absolutely nailed it if they had more 80s movies tunes. I think there was only two. I wonder what the developers could have made if they had time and money for it.
Honestly I think they took this one as far as it would go. I loved it, but the neon everywhere and the forever dark red sky thing starts to get to you after a while.
I really wish the game's writing wasn't at war with itself. They did what I kinda feared would happen and tried to both be serious and self-aware at the same time, which damages both sides. I can see what they were trying to do. There's a really brilliant quip about how society doesn't value altruism that shows up when you access your first hostage rescue mission, which manages to be both perfectly fitting within the setting and a clever meta-commentary on game reward structures, but rarely does the writing manage to do both well. I hate every single loading "tip." And mocking your awful tutorial in-game doesn't make that tutorial any less awful!
Thankfully, the game itself plays really well. It's a nice stripped-down FarCry 3 that manages to fix some of the issues I had with it. I really like not taking fall damage. Not worrying about drop distance really lets you move around a lot faster and eliminates the problem that FC3 had with those weird sharp inclines that looked like you could slide down but would damage you. The titular dragons are neat to mess with - the developers clearly realized how much fun it was to get wild animals into conflict with enemies in FC3 and turned that into a very central mechanic in this one. The weapons all feel great. And everything looks spectacular. For $15, there's a really good and fairly lengthy game here. Well worth your time and money.
Picked this up, I like it. The cutscenes look neat but ramble too much, combat's fun, running around is fun, glad I've never played much of Far Cry anything before this.
Go kill some Ninja Turtles. :tu:
