Fighting Game Tournament Discussion or Something

Smash is where the money is outside of capcom cup. The problem is that it's impenetrable to outsiders this far in. Combine that with the insular nature of their scene (even by fgc criteria), and their general weirdness, and you've got a whole island. The anime fighter cosplayers are bad enough. Put kids that have been playing a Nintendo game competitively for 13 years in the mix and the weirdo scale goes off the charts. They have done a pretty good job of separating their water fountains, but there'd be a revolt if they were included as prime participants.

They already are prime participants. The turn outs are so large that Smash requires it's own room to play. These guys have been doing their thing for years (just like any popular fighting game) and the scene is now so large that they can't be ignored anymore (just like esports in general).

What they do is no weirder than the crowds of men throwing their arms in the air and screaming to mimic a fucking Ultra from Rufus when Justin Wong is playing SF4. There's nothing shocking or anything to get upset about.

That's fine, but it doesn't really belong at EVO.
It's big enough to stand on its own, and that's exactly what it should do.

Smash belongs at EVO just fine. Which is why it's there with both Melee and Smash 4.

My bitching was more on a personal level. I hate that Smash gets two games, no matter its popularity, because yes, I don't think it belongs. That's a bias I just won't get over. It's not a fighting game to me, it's a quirky kinda-sorta-fighter.

But I'm also not dumb. Those numbers prove why there are two versions at EVO, and that makes complete sense to me. I can't argue it on a numbers level, because numbers are proof, not opinions. And if the game gets a bigger audience interested in things like EVO, and those people are then introduced to other fighters they might find interest in, that's a good thing for growing the community and adding to its diversity.

They don't change my opinions, though. Stupid Smash.

Yeah, I remember your take on it seemed more reasonable than Anthony's. His rant kind of came off as pompous.

Smash 4 should be at evo.

Melee has no business there. Evo always moves on.

That was part of my argument as well: that catering to old games that new players might not be able to get into isn't the best for promoting the community either. Play the latest game, and stop being so picky.

Smash is a great four-player party game being played as a silly 1v1 fighter.
