I don't know what word I should be using here. In sf4, I was playing against a few of the best akumas on the east coast with my vega. We went about 4-6 them on average. Akuma was second best, vega was close to dead last. When ssf4 came out, I went to a large gathering and played those guys again, I went almost 100% win rate against all of them. Akuma was still way better than vega in ssf4, but they were closer now, and I raped them for it. Did I suddenly become a "better player"? No, I was always a better player. I simply had much greater skill at fighting games. That's what I look for when I decide what to think about a player.

I also like people who play oddball characters because they are often much more creative, which is a grossly underestimated skill in fighting games.

Depends on who you ask. The most creative figure out who is the best early on. And remember Rowtron? He used Magneto/Cable/Sentinel but with Sentinel's rocket punch assist and straight murdered in MvC2. All the while no one knew who the fuck he was until he made finals in Evo.

That's actually a problem for tournament players. They practice top tier matchups for days and then some motherfucker does some shit with Arthur/MODOK/Hsien-Ko they hadn't practiced against and get destroyed.

That's part of why Marlinpie does so well with Viper.

I'm betting some of the better MvC2 players came to the game gradually instead of launch day.

They weren't the best at the beginning. Valle used Iceman in the beginning! But he, along with many Californians, figured out who was best by about a year's time.

I'm still under the impression that Iceman's pretty good in that game, on account of the chip damage thing.

Marlinpie's execution is damn near perfect. That said, he sucks when he's on defense. Anyone, anyone, who rushes in can beat Marlinpie for the most part. Also, he made tricks for C. Viper it's not that people don't know the match up. He knows how to set up his focus attacks, something everyone knew she had, and can also make a level 3 focus attack inevitable if you're coming in fresh. That's why he wins with C. Viper not because no one uses her.

Strider/Doom do it better and are overall the better character.

My information on that game is a decade old. :lol:

Top players practice all matchups quite a bit, but definately not as much as against the top tiers.
