So their next generation system is better than the competitors current hardware. Amazing.
This is Nintendo we're talking about. Take nothing for granted.
I'm interested to learn how much RAM it has. If it's at least 2GB this system could honestly stand a pretty good chance of staying competitive for a while. Even after the next gen drops, a system with that spec and decent RAM could be in the ballpark for relatively inexpensive downports. Not an altogether bad play, considering Nintendo's hand was somewhat forced.
Of course, I thought that about Dreamcast as well.
We all know how the Sega Saturn alienated virtually everyone, however, and that was working against the Dreamcast from the start; Sony was in a position more analogous to what Nintendo presently enjoys, and naturally, their PlayStation 2 conquered. Granted, interest in the Wii is waning and the U is probably more than a year away, but it isn't as if Microsoft and Sony will have new offerings in the interim.
While writing about the specs above, I did try to hunt down RAM values and more specific information regarding the CPU, but that's still unknown, it seems. Hopefully it'll come to light soon enough.
I'd like to konw the rough specs as well, but what will really make the difference is what sort of on-die cache the CPU will have. If it uses a large enough pool of IBM's super duper eDRAM, then it could run circles around similar PPC chips at the same clock frequency.
All that's been said about the on-die cache is that its "a lot of embedded Dram".
