First two were great dumb fun, I'm in for this.
These games are so much fun, but the characters and story are such shit. They really put my "story doesn't matter in games" theory to the test.
The first two are my favorite open world games ever. I can't wait for this game. I think I need to get Just Cause 2 to play until this comes out.
I don't think I'm going to ever spend money on an open-world game again. I'm fine with messing around with 'em for fifteen minutes on somebody else's machine, though.
<3 Saints Row, can't wait. The new trailer made me wish they'd drop the character creator and just let us play Johnny Gat, though. :)
Will we finally find out where or what the Saints Row in this one?
It's the district the Saints were based in in the first game, a really run down ghetto area. By the time 2 happened it had been taken over, bulldozed and replaced with futuristic office buildings by the Ultor corporation (the bad guys from Red Faction).
He's referring to the fact that it's called "Saints Row", not "Saint's Row." As in, row is a verb in the title.
D'oh, I really should have understood that.
It's been a while since I've had an open-world game, and I've never played a Saints Row. I think I may have to have this.

I loved the second game. It was everything ridiculous and over-the-top that I loved about GTA before IV turned the series (relatively) serious. This one looks even more insane.
I'm sick of all the brown and grey games, but I don't think purple is the answer.
I can't be the only one to have picked this up today. It's just ridiculous and great fun. Anyone else?
James
I'll probably be picking it up next week, I loved Saints Row 2.
Rented and loving it! The first mission sets the bar waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay high and the second? Passes it easily!
This whole "rent games to get them out of my system" has backfired. I'm far more interested in these games now that I'm trying them and discovering that there's more to it than hype.
Saints Row 3 specifically - there's just so much good happening. Plus they bring a control scheme that makes sense to a core game that had a lot going for it in SR2.
This is a 2012 game for me.
I'm playing it on Onlive. Got through a few of the initial missions last night - seems good so far. I love that it has "whored" mode.
One thing I'm not impressed with- the instruction manual. When you poke into the options it shows digital manual is available, but when selecting it you're told to go to THQ's web site. Was disk space on the blu-ray really so tight they couldn't include it?
James
I tried to check it out last night Onlive. After an update that took twenty minutes (its been a few months since I turned the thing on) I got some UDP firewall error message or some shit.
Reviews indicate this game is great, but short - ridiculously so for an open world game (like, in the range of 12 hours for the main story, and including all the side activities only bumps it to 20) - and that it reaks of content being withheld to be sold as DLC (right down to the otherwise baffling omission of popular activities like Fuzz and street races). Can anyone confirm or refute that at this point? Because if it's true, it takes this from potential goty to shame of the year. :(
You're saying short, I'm hearing "not bloated". I don't mind at all if it's 20 hours, especially seeing as I'm liable to add an extra 10 on top due to just screwing about. So long as they're good hours, I'll have gotten my money's worth.
James
So apparently PS3 owners that redeem their online pass for this game in the next 90 days get a free download of Saints Row 2.
I played through the point where you can actually drive around and shit. Playing it onlive just makes me want it on a "real" system. Maybe I will get the ps3 version and take advantage of the free SR2 deal. Never played it.
I'm close to 10 hours and don't even have 10% completion. Looks like it all depends on how much you're willing to rush through everything.
Having a blast just tooling around the city in a pimped out bulldog
I just went crazy with a tank, which is now safely stored away in my garage. I didn't think to check what kind of customization options might be available for it. I need to get on that.
James
Pepsi~
you're right
I played 4 hours of nothing but story missions and hit 20%. So I guess it's a matter of how much goofing around you want.
I'm only 5-6 missions in so far and have put in maybe 15 hours? Both numbers are estimation, but I've spent tons of time feeding the OCD need to explore everywhere, buy every building I come across (still a good number to go), see what kind of chaos I can cause, and check out all the side missions. Coming to an open-world game and focusing on story would be defeating the nature of the genre.
James
This. I'm spending most my time doing everything but the missions. Stealing cars, taking on assassination contracts, etc... Speaking of which, I completed all of the available assassinations and yet it says that I've only completed 23-36. I'm wondering if they're going to offer the remaining 13 in a dowloadable pack? I hope not...but fear that will be the case with everything in this game.
I think more contracts will unlock as you progress through the missions.
Ex: There are one or two contracts that Pierce will give you, but that's only after you get your HQ.
Of course. 12 hours of main story missions is fine. Hell, if anything the story in these games usually goes too long. It's the claim that doing EVERYTHING there is to do only bumps it to 20 that disturbs me. The last game had easily twice that figure WITHOUT the story missions.

Almost 17 hours and I'm only at 20ish% completion. Not sure what these reviewers mean by "everything".
So I kind of screwed up the end-game on this. I'm not done yet but getting level 50 wasn't that hard, seeing as I did all the side missions. While I took a pass on invulnerability, I really shouldn't have bought unlimited ammo. I wish there was a way to turn that off.
James
I finished this last night and had a really good time with it. The old, wacky GTA vibe is all over the place and there's a lot of really great ideas going on. They just wanted to make a fun chaos sort of environment so they cut anything that could slow you down. Good idea being "on the top" of the gang heap at the very start with great weapons and just one over the top mission after the next. The side missions are fun and don't over stay their welcome, it controls really well (except for not being able to just step over fallen street lights. I got stuck on those stupid things more times than I could count) and it's a really good looking game. Buying your way to God status does make you feel like a dumb bulldozer though...that's a balancing act they left up to the player.
DOOT DOOOOOO
DOOT DOOOOOO
DOOT DOOOOOO
AAAAAHHHHH
AAAAHHHHHH
I Need A He-Ro!
Loved that bit. Shame the worse of the two endings has the better final mission, though. At least they were nice enough to let you play through both of them. Still, I have no idea how Saints Row 3 managed to turn that song from 80s cheese into pure damn awesome.
James
I started playing this. The lack of a regular day night cycle is pretty odd.
Picked this up since it was $30 yesterday. Mykes started up the campaign as well so I told him I'd co-op the whole thing. It's rad that a game like this will let you co-op the main campaign, not some bullshit like Red Dead did.
I ordered it for 30 myself, should have it by the end of the week.
I'll play co-op with anybody. Seriously, it's stupid fun.
Finally got around to playing this. Awesome confirmed.
Me and a buddy picked this up on the ps3. amazing game, awesome coop, but holy fuck can they fix the bugs already? call a buddy, freeze on the phone screen until you die. play the game for longer than an hour, lose the sound back ground sound effects or other sound effects or the music or everything entirely. Crazy shit. But it's good enough that I'm putting up with it for now. Tonight we got the radio control gun and upgraded it to take military vehicles. Super easy in co-op to gather a full arsenal of vehicles. I wish I'd had it for the auto theft missions.
Just finished the story. If Gangsters in Space is the last of Red Faction, at least they gave it a send off. Great game.
You should do the other ending too. It's fun if not quite as good. It's also quick if you're fully upgraded. I did everything in the game but the car theft stuff, which was just a lame time sink. Hopefully the next DLC will be actually worth getting.
This is $17 on Steam this weekend.
And the season pass is like $7. This game was stupid fun when I played it on 360. Highly recommended.
GOTY 2011
Should I bother with the season pass? I have no idea if the content from it is actually any good so I just got the main game for now, but if it's worth it then I might bite.
I think it's just mission packs, no story stuff.
I heard the DLC for this is really disappointing. But $7 for all of it might be cool.
I figured, but are they good? IS IT WORTH $7, CHARLES XAVIER FORRESTER?
None of them are good. I'd go as far to say none of them are worth the time they take to play. Unless you really liked the Prof Genki shootout missions. There's more of those in the first mission pack.
Holy fucking shit wow. I only did the story missions so the game only took me about 12 hours to beat, but that was 12 INCREDIBLE hours of sheer amazing.
Wasn't it? I played through it, then Mykes got it and I went right back and did it again co-op.
I can't even pick a favorite part, there's so many good moments. There's naturally funny stuff like when they were singing in the car to the radio to the more meta stuff like making fun of Uncharted 2's final boss, it's all over the place and it's all great.
Missions in SR3 are REALLY GOOD. Everything else is pretty subpar.
Rented this from Blockbuster today, realized I should have day 1'ed this one. So much goddamn fun. If there are still people playing this let me know before I take it back at the end of the month, I imagine it's a blast with friends. Did make the Xbox crash twice though.
Well hopefully I'll find it again soon. Found out the reason for the game crashing those two times (and 5 more times in the same spot(s) later) was that it was a Blockbuster rental and had the worst gouges I'd seen in a long time. It will almost certainly be the next game I buy, though, it's too good not to.
