I think you may have nailed it. There weren't characters I want to play as in the GG games was what I found way back when I was considering them. I have to give them credit for not going down the aesthetic shit hole that is Street Fighter IV though. And obviously the SMT characters are better than their own.

edit: Frankly it wouldn't matter anymore though. KoFXIII was exactly what I want from a fighter on paper, and I never bought it, so by definition I don't get a (dollar) vote.

BB wasn't any more complex than their previous stuff, it was just different. I was initially put off at first because it felt heavier than GG and there seemed to be less of an air game, though I think it ended up just being different than what I was expecting/wanting. When I gave it another shot later on I liked it a lot more without the GG expectations hanging on, but by that point there was a long-term skill barrier to overcome and I just haven't bothered putting in the time.

First impression: this game does everything right as far as matchmaking goes that Capcom seems incapable of. Custom ranked search with an option for "FAST CONNECTIONS ONLY". Hallelujah
The netcode is kind of off though, every match starts off with a bit of slowdown that sometimes lasts just a couple seconds or the entire first round. Not good, but hopefully it's what they're working on.

And the game seems pretty fun so that's good too.

I dunno, the game looks good, people seem to like it, but I've played like 4 different versions of GG and 3 of BB. Couldn't get into ANY of them. I understand that's a "me" thing, but it's keeping me from trying P4A out.

You can mash lp and do an auto-combo into super, so you'd might like it ya goddamn noob

So far I'm loving it! Music and presentation is top notch, plus looks great in HD on a big flat screen. I haven't played online yet, but I think they also have a catagory for players who don't complete matches and mark em in red. The title system for your profile is a bit weird and can see already ways to make it pervy.

I just finished the tutorial school mode and did a few challanges. Going thru arcade mode, which has some story too. So far the BG's all look very nice.

The game is button mash friendly, but with lots of deeper elements to weed out easy wins and seperate skilled from noob. Also if you dug the 1 hit kills in Guilty Gear, they are back in P4, but only if it will complete the match and you have enough power saved up.

We need to make a TNL player room and learn off each other.

I played a bit of this yesterday, and while it seems competent, I just don't see myself playing this instead of the dozen or so fighters I already have.
The HUD is the typical busy box of gauges and shit, but I found it easier to figure out than BlazBlue.
I could see myself playing this if it takes off here.

What are stick users using for a button config?
I tried playing with regular attacks on the top row, and persona attacks on the bottom row, since that way the evade move is the same as in KoF.

It's really hard to get away from the auto-combo as a noob but I'm really loving this weirdo boxer guy.

Fighting games should be built around selling people cosmetic garbage nowadays.

People hate arc games because they usually have a giant skill barrier before you start really "playing" the game. SF's and even marvel's are much much lower, so it's easier to see the depth.

Usually, the benefit of such a complex system is at the highest levels you have more fantastic tools and variety. I don't know how BB turned out, I keep trying to get myself to like the final guilty gear (Accent Core) with no success, in preparation for the next one.

There's Guilty Gear stuff going on, but they've made the entry much more lubricated with the auto combo thing and less precise button inputs. It's not easy, but it's not Marvel qcf-hurp-dat-durp either.

PS3 by all accounts has much better online, but there's already a patch coming for the 360. BB had great online, so I'd imagine it'll be fine soon.

I have a hard time finding matches in SSF4AE, but I can play SSF2T on GGPO at any time of day.

Yeah, if every fighting game had the kind of "here's a huge lobby of players and you can chat and match up on your own and see pings" online play that GGPO offers it'd be fine.

But we're stuck with the garbage matchmaking that console-ports force upon us and it's terrible.

Holy shit this story mode. I did arcade mode without paying attention thinking it was story mode and it was what I expected, then I saw the real story mode and I'm suddenly in the middle of a ridiculous visual novel. At least it looks like anyone getting this for the story won't be disappointed.

It came out in Japan about two weeks ago, so you're either playing against Japanese players or some real nutbags that couldn't wait.

The more I play this online, the more fun I'm having with it. Part of it no doubt is that I'm playing a style of fighter (Arc System Works) that I'm usually not big into, and I'm playing a character (Yukiko) that's of a style I'm usually not into. So, it's a fun change of pace.

Is there an actual quick match feature I'm missing? I really just want to mess around with different characters against other people but when I pick quick match all I see is a round-robin lobby waiting system. It's cool for just camping with a group and I do like seeing the other players, but I'm trying to just get a feel for things and having to wait for 2-3 matches to get a shot at seeing how people react to stuff is kind of bleh.

There is a quick match option like you describe, but I think it's ranked matches only.

Yeah just do a bunch of ranked matches. You can even set one of the search criteria to "Training" but I don't know if that does anything other than match you with other people not being super competitive.

I got this for 360 and I'll try it tonight. Hopefully it's better than SFxT.

I've never played Persona 4 (waiting on Vita version) - will the story mode spoil it?

Just play the regular arcade mode. There's a little bit of story, but not enough to spoil anything.

I'm doing the same as you, waiting on Persona 4 Vita. There's enough to do between arcade, challenge, and multi to stay busy.

Tried out a tiny bit of this last night. First impressions:

Production values are through the fucking roof, the graphics, and general UI, music, etc. are ridiculously good.

Lots of nice touches abound. This game was made by a team who gets it way more than anyone at Capcom or even the Skullgirls dudes. I noticed several small but much-appreciated details in training and challenge mode.

The exclamation points that tell you how you fucked up in combat are the best idea ever.

The story mode had a very P4 feel to it, way more elaborate than I would have imagined. You definitely need to have played 4 at least some to have an idea about what is going on, and there were plenty of spoilers about. I like it more than the MK story mode, which was just two bros meeting up, disagreeing over something minor (no, *I* will save Sonya!), yelling MORTAL KOMBAT and then trying to kill each other.

I've yet to try to play online, but from what FirstButt said it sound like exactly what I've wanted from Capcom for years.

This game is beyond a doubt worth $60, but it would be an absolute steal at $40! Like Catherine I feel like an asshole but will probably wait for the price to drop.

This game is fun. I played 2 games online and they were flawless. I lost, but they played great.

Atlus rules. They might be my favorite developer, even if calling this an Atlus-developed game is kind of cheating.

Mzo, have you played any of the BlazBlue games? A lot of the details in this game exist in all of the BlazBlue console games -- the games are based on the same engine (right down to sharing some of the same bugs...). Hell, even most of the modes (including story mode) are handled nearly identically in BlazBlue, too.

One thing I like from a design standpoint is that they managed to simplify a lot of stuff typically found in fighting games without really making the game dumber. How everything outside of IKs are done with either quarter circle forward or quarter circle back, or the fact that the 5A autochains give a very simple combo to beginners without completely laming the game out for them (that and they actually have some value even in higher level play, due to the meter/burst bonus you get), or how everyone gets an easy reversal without turning the entire game into a joke (since the start-up on them is universally slow; they are very easy to safe jump against).

It felt to me just like BlazBlue for people that prefer licensed anime, but since I never really got into BB I wasn't sure how deep it went.

The story mode is very spoilerish but it also explains pretty much everything it needs to, I had no problem following what was going on. I do rather feel like I already know most of the character plot to Persona 4.

Blaz sucked dick. Saying it's an ASW game is like saying Street fighter 2 and 3 are the same. I don't know much about this game, but that company is totally hit or miss like every other, they just seem to care more.

It is, but I also feel like ASW had to hold to some restraint due to it being a pre-established license, versus going completely nuts with their own property. Obviously I'm biased due to this being Persona, but I do think the more restrained feel versus BB/GG makes me like P4A more than those two.

I love the philosophy behind the auto combos and command lists free of arcane joystick motion inputs: basic punishers shouldn't be arbitrary tests of execution. But I can't figure out how someone who subscribes to that philosophy would demand precisely timed flurries of mashing on Dust combos; two button sweeps; and a low jump input consisting of a bunch of things, none of which are "up." Down + A + C? Huh? How is that more intuitive than just tapping Up/Forward quickly like we've been doing since 1996? That don't make no sense.

I think it works because it gives a very controlled hop a specific command. I also love that mid-air reverse facing has a command.

I like that. That, the big ol' sprites, Just Defense, the extra super and damage boost at < 30% health, and the A + B evasive command make this feel like a Fatal Fury game for the Year 2000.

Do you prefer no executional differences, or just less of an emphasis than in previous games?

It should be easier to start execution wise at least enough that new players can focus more on learning the game mechanics and basics of a fighting game instead of having to spend tedious amounts of time in practice mode working on execution. I hate it so much.

I like some difficulty in places where the player stands to gain a big advantage, be it in health (Final Atomic Buster in ST), position (triangle jumping with Magneto), momentum (Eddie buzzsaw strings, reversals in ST) or significant combinations thereof. I do not like it in places where a player stands to gain a small advantage while punishing a big mistake. It should be easy to sweep Sagat if he whiffs a fierce tiger uppercut on wakeup. The auto combo in P4 is the equivalent of the ST sweep: a uniform input for all characters to do decent damage punishing a big mistake. If you want to do more than decent damage in either game, you're going to have to put in some work. This is the right idea!

It's not a great analogy because sweeps have more applications than just punishing DPs, but you know what I'm sayin'.

What would be a good example to the contrary? SF4 usually has strong 2 in 1s, GG has Gatling chains for most chars, I guess tekken has obtuse punishers? Marvel 2?

Edit: The more I thought about, I'd say guilty gear must be the closest thing to no easy, well no easy anythings. But that game was not designed for beginners. Gatling chains are easy, but you have to learn a different one for each char.

The first item is random, after that it's in a fixed order (the list loops back to the first item in the fixed order after the end of it).

The list of items here is the order that they spawn in -- it goes slow mech, soda, dry ice, bomb, barrel, smoke bomb, firecracker, lightning, energy drink, fast mech, poison curry, meteors.

I tried most of the characters in this game. I think I like Yukiko the best.

It's all anecdotal. I see a lot of the same people over and over. Plus my high score for arcade mode, which I slopped through, was ranked around 7000, which reminds me of the Club.

Plus it's currently #562 on Amazon's game list, while the PS3 version is #214. For comparison purposes, UMVC3 360 is #550.

It's such a fun game too! I really enjoy it.

Eh, you'll always see alot of the same people over and over with the niche fighting games. Just be glad the matchmaking works really well because there's nothing worse than trying to get a game going in a dead game with bad matchmaking (example in Capcom games: two potential players might be searching for a match at the same time but it doesn't match you up because the search relies on one user creating the match and another joining)

And while it has clearly sold more on PS3 I think that has more to do with the Persona brand's popularity there versus people that will actually stick with a fighting game for a while. I bet it evens out in the long run.

Agreed, while searching for stuff on this game before I've come across a ton of threads from people who just want this game for the Persona story and hate fighting games. I doubt the actual competition is any better on either system.

I'm switching to Yuki, she is pretty awesome. I spent a lot of time practicing against max AI Kanji. He's got some really hard to see moves like his immune to damage grab with huge range. Also the story mode is definitely pretty solid though it's a little boring when it's not being funny. At least until I got to Mitsuru & crew's story. Haven't really seen anyone on besides Pineapple though.

Also the online is pretty amazing. It seems as long as you give it a second to buffer at the beginning it plays really well? At least I haven't noticed much trouble.

One more thing, why the hell when you pull up the "Replay leaderboard" you can't download Replays from there... It's kind of difficult to get replays from other people unless they're higher on the point list.

GGs to Thief last night, Mech/Dipstick/Thief the night before. Really interesting variety of characters, I think I'm settling on the guy with the folding chair as my main for now (because there is no giant circle throw character for me :( ) Online was setup very well imo and so far has worked out great, except while playing this game my mic will freak out and cause a ton of feedback and I have to unplug it. Only game that happens in. Have only played ranked matches so far (8 for 11, I think), but they're set up a little different than something like SF and I like it.

I like the different systems at play like instant blocks and the One More Time thing, but I seem to be eating a LOT of stuff right now, even when I'm just focusing on blocking and defense. Most likely I'm just unfamiliar with how a lot of people's attacks work and therefore I'm blocking wrong or something, but it feels a little cheap at times.

Overhead options are a lot faster than say SSFIV where they're all incredibly slow, a lot of people's all out attack are overheads and there is either some autoguard or invincibility involved in it, I'm not sure which. Also it could be just when you're against me that it gives you trouble, my headset doesn't work and worse, a piece of the headphone jack is stuck inside the stick so getting a new one would just be a waste of money :(.

I wonder if it's causing feedback for people I play who have a headset in?

All of the All-Out Attacks have to be blocked standing, and have invincibility frames (but not at the beginning; you can't use them like Furious Actions). They're all unsafe on block, though -- that and between taking a hit standing and crouching, you want to take it standing, since everyone's combos aren't as good when characters are standing (don't ask, it's a quirk common to all ArcSys fighters).

This isn't SF4. :V

Defense is pretty hard in this game, and can actually be harder than in GG or BB because there is no FD/barrier to use to air block or to push people back. Alongside those changes, jumping up and holding back isn't effective, since you can't air block for the first few frames that you have gone in the air. It comes with time; you definitely need to learn the match-ups.

I've spent quite a bit of time facing off against max level CPU in training mode against certain characters. Shadow Labrys is realllly tough for Yukiko since her Persona can block projectiles with minimal risk. But it's really help to understand a lot of attacks that are coming at me, though I just don't have the reaction to see Kanji is invincible and going to throw me from a decent range command grab. But least I'm alright at not getting caught in his random air grabs that people like to throw out with him. That thing has some beastly tracking with the EX version.

I don't think we had an issue until you connected to the room, but since I had to leave (was not pleased about that, but whatever) I couldn't test my theory of kicking each person from the room to see if one of us would fix it.

Dipstick was totally cheating and using real combos. How dare he.
