Seems like something you'd want to get into with some kind of expertise, instead of going in and making a bunch of pricy mistakes the first time out.
If she wants to buy the tools, and do the research, she can probably do a lot of the mechanical clean up and maintenance work herself.
I wouldn't advise doing the paint though. Too big of a money dump just for one project imo.
