I wish there was actual gameplay shown, but I'm hoping for a third person action game with the same level of set pieces and pacing as the Uncharted series. And I hope it is not focused on co-op, despite the pair of protagonists shown in the trailer.

If it features less characters dangling from cliffs than Uncharted I'm game. Hoping it leans more to horror than gunplay.
All of Naughty Dog's series have been drastically different in gameplay, I doubt they got stuck into an Uncharted rut now.
A bit of a "been there done that" vibe from the trailer, but I like the girl's perspective. I hate to admit it but I'm interested. Cautiously interested.

Interesting to see. I worked on this a little while at SCEA, but it was code named T1.
I wonder if this takes place in the same world as Tokyo Jungle. Pretty similar premise, only there are no people at all left in Tokyo
Looks interesting.
I really need to finish up the Uncharted series, btw.
Love survival/apocalypse games, love zombie games (even if this isn't quite that), I trust Naughty Dog to make something fun, and Ellie is just ridiculously cute (not in that way) and I (hopefully) can't wait to play as her.
My hope is that this'll be more open-world game about survival, and less Uncharted "follow the path through adventure" kind of stuff. Especially as I'm currently watching The Walking Dead for the first time. Watching that makes me want a real survival-type zombie game.
That exact episode, actually!

I loved the first two, can't imagine the third doing something horribly wrong. Well, now that they've patched the aiming issue.
The aiming issue was overblown imo. I wouldn't have even known about it if I played the game without reading forums.
BUT back on topic, Naughty Dog wants to "change the fucking industry" with The Last of Us.
Also, concept art
So they're abandoning the completely generic writing they've been giving their own games?
It sounds like they've just trying to delve further in "videogames that are like movies" as opposed to increasing the interactive portions of the storytelling. The reason average storytelling tends to get praised in videogames is because videogames are not just the story and the player is not just watching the cutscenes and judging the game on that alone. It's about the connection between what the player has control over and what's driving them forward into the next section. Uncharted certainly wouldn't good if it was just the writing that was being graded since it's no more than a generic summer movie forgotten during the same afternoon it was watched. It's good because it emulates those movies which are actually enjoyable and then gives the player control over the action sequences, creating a bond that would otherwise not exist.
If they want to push storytelling in games forward then they need to look to expanding on the ways that people can control conversation flow and choices in cutscenes instead of worrying about the writing in non-interactive cutscenes. Take Mass Effect 2's ability to interrupt and push it even further, allowing every conversation to be interrupted. Worry about what will happen if the player has the ability to alienate all the NPCs. Make the creation of their father-daughter love story bond come out of the decisions that the player makes and not a forced thing that ultimately has nothing to do with anything the player did.
I'm sure The Last of Us will be cinematically interesting, but considering what they mentioned in that link it sounds like they have a Hollywood idea of what pushing forward would be instead of anything to do with the actual medium.
Looks lame.
This got delayed a month to June 14. Depending on when Beyond comes out, that might actually have given this generation another month to draw breath as well.
This looks really impressive.
New Game+ revealed in trophies, along with Easy, Normal, Hard, and Survivor difficulties.
I feel odd typing this, but the multiplayer ideas in this look pretty great:
This game got 10/10 from Edge and Eurogamer. Also from IGN but, IGN.
I want to see reviews from sites I trust more, but Colin Moriarty from IGN gave this a 10 and called it "a masterpiece, PlayStation 3's best exclusive, and an absolute must-play."
edit: Oh, those Edge and Eurogamer reviews must have just gone up. I start my daily cycle with them.
Also a 7.5 from Polygon, worse than SimCity confirmed.
I really haven't been following this game so I don't know how the hype has been. But the game looks phenomenal.
I don't want to read details, since I've had this preordered for almost a year anyway.
I just worry about these types of scores, Infinite got the same and now everyone hates it. This looks better than that though.
I want to know why all the reviews hit nine days early. I guess we can't accuse Sony or Naughty Dog of trying to hide anything.
Maybe they know everyone is going to be VERY BUSY next week. And those reviews will get buried in the news as well.
Yeah, good point. E3 is gonna slam the games sites with next gen info.
The release day for this is perfect. I'm going to look at all the cool new games at e3 and be sad because I won't get to play them until months from then, but now I will get to play something new and awesome right away! Hooray!
The Last of Us marks the first time I've ever been interested in anything Naughty Dog is working on, and may be the first game I buy on launch day since New Vegas. Hell, it'll be the first game I own on PS3, period.
Are you buying a PS3 for this or do you own one you've never bought a game for?
Metal. Gear. 4.
NOW.
Yeah, MGS4 is a pretty solid movie.
I started and never finished that game. Maybe I should try again, I loved the first three.
The last third or whatever of MGS4 was the best part. Hot XXX MG on MG action.
I've played MGS4, so you win the "Man, That's Awesome" award, but I don't need a copy. I played at a friend's and watched him play through.
Dark secret? I really, really respect Hideo Kojima and I really appreciate his work, but I haven't gotten into MGS like a lot of people. I liked the first one and second. Couldn't get into 3 because of the time required to get past the opening segment.
Really, I need to give the series more time. When I'm not working part-time jobs to make ends meet while working on games, I'll take a vacation and give MGS3 + 4 a whirl.
Also, dammit, I fear I've derailed this thread. So, The Last of Us Looks so cool. Does that fix it?
So not having release date shipping might actually have a silver lining.
Just reserved the game at Red Box. I'll pick it up tonight when I hit my friend's place for some Cards Against Humanity.
The autosave glitch seems to have been fixed.
Naughty Dog @Naughty_Dog
We've addressed the autosave issue, it was related to servers on our end. Please quit to XMB and restart the game. SP and MP are OK to play!
10:19 AM - 14 Jun 13
That was quick. Three Day Select shipping is back to 100% sucking.
The intro to this game was fucking great! I played for about an hour after the intro and I got kinda bored with it. What the hell? I'm sure it picks up and it's just because I'm really tired. Also, I'm not impressed with the graphics. I'm pretty sure the uncharted games look better.
Depends. I think this game is more cinematic, but the UC games did have better wet clothing effects and fewer things that just seemed painted on. I've spent about five or so hours playing it so far and love the story, characters, and the acting. Combat is a bit frustrating, but that's also because it involves some mandatory stealth stuff and I suck at that. It's still never frustrated me to the point of stopping though.
I am absolutely loving the combat combined with all of the scavenging. Looking for bricks to break faces with all day every day.
This is $45 on Newegg's ebay store - http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Last-of-...epn=5337259887
3,350 sold
God that shit annoys me. 3350 people were able to buy the game cheaper at retail than we were at wholesale.
murca
I was also one of those 3,350. Sorry SSJN.
I wasn't planning on buying the game until I saw it available at that price. My brother has a PS3, I figure we can try to play the game between the two of us.
So far, I'm liking the game well-enough. Sometimes, find it a little confusing. For instance, early on, you're running with a couple people, and getting shot at. Because of the narrative, I assumed I should be careful for their sake and ended up getting the piss shot out of me. Turns out, I could have just gunned it, and they would have been fine. There go two health kits.
Beyond that, I'm enjoying it.
So far, meh
I'm 30% into this game now, and I'm certainly not understanding all of the 10 out of 10 scores. The opening 10 minutes are surely pretty cool, and it really makes you feel for the main character, but once the main, post-apocalyptic, narrative kicks in the game gets surprisingly boring for a long stretch of time.
The game just feels packed with too many ideas too, most of which don't add much to the experience, like healing yourself by taking time to wrap bandages around your wounds, by crafting items and upgrading weapons (and this is one of the most boring upgrade systems I've come across in a while), or holding R1 to "listen" for enemies. It feels like they spent so much time trying to immerse you in the games' world, that they forgot to tighten up the main gameplay mechanics. The shooting in this game is so terrible, that it shouldn't even be an option to shoot. Your best bet is to run like a little bitch, use a stealth kill, or punch/melee the hell out of most of the enemies. Meanwhile, the microscopic triangle that indicates which items you can interact with, should be a bit bigger so I don't pass them up if I'm walking around in the dark. Again, this games' tragic flaw is that it goes for immersion at the expense of gameplay.
At this point, I'm honestly only playing the game for the story. This makes a hell of a nice "interactive movie." If only it were more FUN to PLAY. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this game is horrible, but if Naughty Dog plans on making this a series they do have a bunch of room for improvement in a sequel....this is far from a 10/10. I don't see this having the mass appeal of the Uncharted series either.
3 hours in, it's not 10 out of 10 unless it gets really crazy-amazing, really fast. It's good, I'm happy with it, I definitely want to know what happens next. 10 of 10, though? Pure hyperbolic bullshit.
James
I think I would like this more if I weren't terrible at stealth. But I always get discovered, and the gunplay isn't so good.
It's beautiful, and I'll see it through because I'm interested in the story. But I'll probably die a lot and not have an excessive amount of fun.
This is more or less how I feel. Maybe I am hypocrite since i liked Infinite a lot and people criticized it in a similar way, but I just am not feeling it. I am going to continue though.
By the way, while his game is a looker for a console game, in the last 6 months I have been so used to so much more that it's actually pretty tough. Double the resolution and double the framerate spoils you a LOT. This game doesn't even hold 30. And it doesn't look as clean as Uncharted did.
Speaking of Uncharted, there's a nice little reference to it in the toy store. Both Uncharted and Jak and Daxter get board games in this game's world.Attachment 70515
Attachment 70516
That is the uncharted board game. It is real
well soccer mom hasn't even played the game yet so that's par for the course.
But I'm loving everything about the gameplay and don't agree with anyone that even suggests that this would be better as a movie. Loving the stealth, or more, loving being able to use stealth effectively as a means to conserve supplies and then fend for myself once shit gets out of hand. Loving the supply/inventory management and actually being rewarded for scavenging for supplies and how it actually makes sense in the setting to do so. Yeah, pistols kind of suck but it feels right to me, where I depend on the shotgun/hunting rifle to get me out of hairy situations and can't just rapid-fire headshot everything with the shitty pistols.
Yeah, I like it a lot.
I'll admit that the game does pick up a bit once you get the shotgun. I'm about 43% in right now, and the game gets a little better as you find more weapons and upgrade them accordingly. It's still not a 10 though. If I had to assign a numerical score to this game, there really isn't anything in it that would inspire me to give it more than an 8 at the very most. I really applaud Naughty Dog for trying something different though. Let's face it, they could have very easily just made this an "Uncharted clone with Zombies", and this is far from that. Ironically though, I would still enjoy playing an Uncharted clone with zombies, more than this.
I honestly think that my enjoyment of the game is slightly deterred by the amount of stealth in the game though. Admittedly, I absolutely suck at stealth, in any game, and it's one of my least favorite game play styles imaginable. So, if anybody is on the fence about this game, and you're not a fan of stealth, I suggest waiting for a price drop (or just rent it), because stealth is a necessity in many areas of the game. If you're not using stealth, enjoy viewing the "game over" screen dozens of times over, while random zombies "one hit kill" you by chewing on your jugular.
TNL - If it's not Rez it's just not good enough.
What about Smashing Drive?
If someone was to make a game about TNL, it would also be called The Last of Us
I'm actually liking this way more than Uncharted 2. It's also probably not as basic as some of y'all might think, though I'm playing on Hard with no Listen Mode...
I thought this was pretty phenomenal. I loved the story, graphics, gameplay, and especially the sound design. I guess this would be close to a 10 if I were rating shit that way.
<3 teh jemery
So... this game is really really good. Really. I planned on playing it for an hour and just shut it off after 5.
Now that I can make health kits and customize weapons, I like it a lot more. Because I insist on killing everything. It's not so much that I hate stealth (although I do), but these environments are too beautiful to be left unexplored.
Things are really picking up now that Tess is tits up and I'm out of Boston.
My review just went live - http://www.game-over.com/content/201...-of-us-review/
It's far different than anything I've written before, and is more of an examination of the characters than a regular game review.
The key to this game so far for me is to forget I have guns. The combination of stealth, shivs, and molotovs makes it a blast. I don't want to read teh jemery's review yet, like any of the others, but I can tell from what he wrote there at the end that he gets what I believe the developers intended. The game is such an amazing metaphor for the generation it is largely closing.
Have a lot of molotovs ready for those damn Clickers then.
I finished this game today, and I'd say, overall, it was a pretty great experience. I still wouldn't recommend it to people who play games for the actual game play, but from a storytelling, and being immersed in the world, standpoint, this game is in a whole other league.
I told a friend earlier today, that the "fun factor" in this game, ironically, rests on the fact that it is NOT "fun" to play. By the end of this game, I felt like I went on a journey that was a complete physical and emotional grind. I felt worn out. I felt that I fought to stay alive for the entirety of the 14 hours it took me to finish the game. The Last of Us, more so than any other game I've ever played, felt like a true test of survival skills...not just physically surviving an ordeal, but mentally and emotionally surviving as well. I did not have fun playing this game, and that's what makes it great.
It's games like this, that I wish Roger Ebert would have taken a chance to play.
I am liking this game more now as well. But mostly I want to see how it ends
This is amazing.
I think I'm halfway through, and I've played 14 hours. They seriously expect you to play through three times to get everything?
I don't think I've ever played anything like this. It arguably has redefined "survival horror." I am physically stiff and worn out from the tension when I am done playing each night.
This game is just not clicking with me. After playing Tomb Raider, this is just so god damn boring. I played an hour after getting the nail bombs, does it pick up ever?
I have a bug where I can no longer see how much health I have, unless it's very low and the outer part flashes
I finished this game on Hard today. Too much slow stuff (get the ladder, get the planks, carry the damn pallet around the water 50 times). But the story was incredible.
Tapatalk, Tapatalk, everybody and their mother loves reading TNL on Tapatalk. Yay, Tapatalk.
Just arrived in Salt Lake City. I think my journey is coming to an end soon.
I've turned a corner on this game. It really picks up once you leave Pittsburgh. Seriously, standing on the beach and looking at that dead skyline at dawn--so eerie and beautiful. I stopped and admired it for a couple minutes. Since then, I'm all in on the story, and I'm even enjoying the gameplay now that I can customize the hell out of everything. The only negatives that come to mind are the sequences where you have play as weak, weak Ellie. I'm gonna take a day or two off, then finish this.
I don't care about replaying it for electronic attaboys, but I really hope the DLC involves Ish, his adventures upon returning after the apocalypse, and finding out what the hell happened to him after he left the sewers. I think that story has legs.
This game is absolutely PHENOMENAL. Beat it once, started playing through again. Didn't want it to end.
So, I've been playing this and it's pretty good I guess.
Naughty Dog are amazing, but I was hoping this would be a little more unconventional in terms of gameplay. The story/gameplay disconnect isn't as jarring as Uncharted because of the theme, but it ends up feeling like the story and presentation have become more sophisticated than the game design.
Would Have Appreciated (WHA): A shorter game with more sparse, thoughtfully-placed encounters. Far fewer enemies. I'd like to see what would happen if they threw expected tropes out the window and made the gameplay and story 100% compatible, instead of the (still commendable) 75% they've got going on.
