I think Mzo's still somewhere talking about Parasite Eve tapes.
Those segments have gotten shorter, but there was some talk a while back about making them their own show. So regular theme show one week, WWBP the next week, alternating.
I think just shooting the shit every podcast will make the participants lose interest and not give anyone a compelling reason to tune in regularly. We could do a couple that way as an experiment, but I don't like it.
Yeah, it'd be good to have that while either your or sleeve keeps people on topic or something. Letting Mzo and Chuck and Chris go off on tangents for two hours probably be horrible. The topics right now just seem kind of forced and unnecessary in my opinion
And the worst part is every single time anyone moves away from the timeline because something comes up that you're actually interested in talking about and sleeve awkwardly interrupts Mzo and everything is ruined.Quote:

See, I think it's the opposite of what a couple of you have said. Topics may be largely about "old stuff," but they give us something different and entertaining to talk about from week to week. Not to mention that the warm glow of nostalgia is important to communities like ours.
The news segments we've done have more or less been the weakest segments we've done. But the possibility I'm worried about most is being needlessly repetitive, which will decidedly not make the show a must-listen.
Week one: more info on the Vita and Diablo III; this week's releases; Eric talks about Dark Souls, Chris and Chuck talk about The Old Republic, Mzo talks about Monster Hunter Tri.

Most video game news either is uninteresting, incrementally builds on last week's news, or both. The show would be too similar from week to week and more people would skip it.
Anyway, that's just my take on it. I think the show is evolving well and I want to tweak the formula, not throw it out. But I welcome more constructive comments.

I don't mind talking about current video game goings-on as long as it is incredibly relevant and not some weird tangent that we haven't even really looked too deep into like the SOPA ep. That was probably one of the weakest ones imo.
The thing is between us we have a lot of experience with games and shit, but I know that Chux aside we don't generally rush out and buy every new game that is released. In fact, it's been almost impossible to find a game or even a game series that we have all played. We're going to talk about shit that one or more of us doesn't know about, new or old, guaranteed.
Also these are running two deep so current event stuff would be old.

I put episode 12 up on the server about ninety minutes ago, but I'm still working on the show page. This one had some audio problems and started out a bit too laid back, but there is some funny material in there.
I think the themed shows are good, especially how you find ways to tie the themes back into what's happening today.
Maybe do something about East vs. West development? Although to be sobering, tackle it not from the "who does it right" angle but what the strengths and weaknesses are in each, and how both have failed to grow up or where they can improve in ways that the other isn't covering?
Honestly I think the strength in the show is when you're all relating personal experiences (which showed with the more nostalgic stuff) rather than rattling off the news of the day, what's coming out, etc. - all the same bullshit every other games site does every day.
TNL is very community-centric these days, and as a "fansite" that doesn't really owe allegiance to publishers, this also means it's harder to stay abreast of cutting edge releases/playthroughs/demos/news that other sources have on tap (and again, do to death). I'd much rather learn more about how TNL thinks about things, or what members are doing than hear the same thing GiantBomb, 1up, et al. just covered.
I like the topics overall, but everyone has their own idea about what is being talked about, and their own examples, so a lot of times its just 1 opinion after another instead of a discussion. This latest one, Nick did try to come up with some kind of final consensus which was good. I'd like it if there was a little more structure to the conversations. Also, just my opinion, not a fan of the music mid-episode, it takes you out of the conversation.
A lot of good points brought up this episode, but everyone was all over the place, it was hard to figure out what each person's point of view was. The rants were a bit out of control. I think a lot of games actually have some kind of hidden difficulty setting that was suggested, like RE4 and 5 I'm pretty sure varied the random drops and enemy AI depending on how you were doing.

Thanks. I also tried to come up with a set of suggestions to end the SOPA episode, but I have never gotten together a full set of notes before it was time to record. I will work harder to get the pre-show together now that the editing is coming together more quickly.
I've put mid-show music in two episodes now when a particular composition was being discussed (music from Gyromite and the ice stage of Mega Man). It was for about twenty-five second each time. I detest excessive music and sound effects in a talk format, but I was using the sound files the way you might, for example, put up a picture of Yuji Naka if you were discussing him on a video. Does anyone else think it was a negative?
Also, what's everyone think about going to two shorter podcasts per week with two or three participants instead of one a week with five participants?
Nah, it was fine. Long enough to jog your memory (or give someone an idea as to what you're talking about if they've never heard it), but not so long that it's distracting or annoying.Quote:

Just listened to episode 10—I was so sad that Corpse Party was brought up, but that nobody had played it! Was my second favorite game of last year. Definitely a "love it or hate it" thing, but I couldn't believe how much I ended up loving it.
If Corpse Party was on PSN instead of PSP I would've played it already.

Feedback: more conversational (as mentioned above) plz; less Mzo; keep themes as "main articles" but toss in some news/current trend discussion; throw to a break to work in music.
Overall: keep it up!
Sometimes I think the show should be renamed "Miserable Mzo of Secrets", as roughly 70% of any given conversation is Mzo vs [x]. Not really a critique, but more of an observation, as he's typically insightful in his dialogue.
Still loving the show. You guys should do a topic on differences in game design philosophies between Japan and the west...aka: Outworld vs F-Chans. Maybe discuss how Japan led the world in console development in the 80's and 90's, and why they're playing catch-up now, and identify the catalyst that caused this paradigm shift.

Seriously, the dead spots while recording were horrible. Nick had to put a ton of work into making it good.
Well he did a great job, this was easily the best podcast imo. It could have something to do with the fact that I still play SSF4 almost daily and that I really REALLY enjoyed listening to bahn and Mzo talk about it (did other people talk during that ~45 minutes? I feel bad for anyone listening who doesn't like fighting games :) ). Hell, I learned something too, I didn't know that if you use focus it builds the revenge meter! Then again, I don't use focus attacks almost ever, but still it's good to know! A++ job, fellas!

ArsTechnica does a "rent/buy/avoid" ratings score and kotaku is now doing "Should you PLAY this? Yes/No/Maybe" - maybe something along those lines is better than a ridiculous star/point system with odd half measures and decimal point systems.
Also, any time I hear fighting game shop, talk, I'm motivated to play. Which is usually - play, try to practice, get smoked, get hand cramps, stop for another month.

I listened to the last two episodes. I dig it, even if its a million minutes long.
Some suggestions:
1) Shorten the intro music at the start, maybe even get some TNL'ers to make you a real theme song?
2) You should start your podcast with the what people have been playing segment, and then move onto the main topic. It's lighter fare so it should be easier to jump into, and would serve almost as an entree of sorts. This will allow your guests to get more comfortable before diving in to the meaty main course.
3) Further down the line, you may want to think about getting a number for people to leave feedback on, it's self creating content and it gets the community more involved.
I think you guys are doing a great job. You don't want to do current topics and news, that will make you like every other video game podcast out there and isn't really in the spirit of the site.
