2 hours!?!
Listen twenty minutes a day. Or twenty minutes in total. Do what works for you, Web child.
I'm enjoying the podcast this week. Definitely getting better. 2 hrs is fine also.
The podcast does not feature a total ignore button. Man up and listen.
It's true. She said your 90 second bump and grind session is so boring that it literally feels like two hours.
that was before she had the kid, now it IS 2 hours
Should we start copying/pasting those other jokes?
Nah, they got it.
but that was the most fun I'd had on TNL in ages.
Who said it has to end... go back there, take back what's yours.
you can't go home again.:(
Here's a question: are you trying to appeal more you the 30 or so common posters here or are you gunning for an outside audience? There's a lot of inside baseball in this episode.
Man, if you guys designated someone to move things along you'd be all set. That was pretty entertaining!
Any chance we'll get this weeks episode tonight? I've got some time to kill and I would love to spend it listening to your sexy voices and... I mean I just wanna listen.
No way it will be ready tonight. I know this sounds bad, but it probably won't be ready until Thursday. I had a lot of time-consuming things to do this week, but I swear I will do everything humanly possible to get future ones out on Wednesday mornings.
I also wonder what the target audience is, I feel like there are a lot of references and jokes that only TNL members of 5+ (random number) years would get.
If appealing to a wider audience, or even to get current TNL members more interested in listening maybe present your views, then end with a 'what do you listeners think.' I have a ton of opinions as I'm sure others do. Each podcast should probably have its own thread, and then maybe you could even do a quick recap of last week's topic with the feedback. Quick could be hard, but that part could pretty easily be planned beforehand so there's no need for interjections/tangents. That's a lot of random ideas, but at least a new thread to get listeners involved I think would help a lot. If that's what you want of course.
As it is, it is like getting the opinions of the cast and that's all, which is great if I have pictures of you guys on my wall and wonder how you feel all the time, while kicking my legs and writing in my diary.
Good show of course, I'm pretty big into fighters so I actually understood it all. Hi to Bahn, not sure if he remembers playing me a bit in SF4. Last episode I felt like Corey was actually really fucking good. Stayed on topic, answered questions, had examples that actually supported what his point was, took the interjections from the other cast, followed up with the joke, then rolled it right back and finished making his original point.
Now if only he weren't such a terrible person.
I love you John.
I'm going to send John some glossy 8x10s of myself to hang on his wall. It will be glorious.
I already have some, but it would be nice to have some not though a wide angle lens with bush leaves and stuff in the way.
Also you guys (or anyone) who wants to play MH again can get an application-free invitation to my guild Rampant Hunting. Tempting, no?
Soon. Not right now because my Wii is packed up and not next week when ME3 comes out. Just: soon.
The "what do you guys think" might work, but maybe ask at the beginning of the show, not only at the end. The main problem is that I have been neglecting to pimp the phone number and the forums enough. I going into this week's show with a ton of notes, though.
The next show we're recording focuses on hardware launches, and we probably already have a call-in for that. What we will start doing is making sure we figure out topics well enough in advance that we can always announce the following week's focus and solicit calls ahead of time on a particular topic.
More audience participation will come with time, and I don't think a separate thread for each episode is warranted just yet. Maybe soon.
We have had issues with being prepared for shows and that is something I'll fix. I also need to get a podcast page running that explains who we are and has a list of all the shows.
I hear you guys say THE HYPHEN NEXT LEVEL DOT COM about 100 times per show. You're pimping the forum plenty
I hear you can find it on Google, maybe even Bing?
Right at the very top, sugar lips.
Here's a suggestion. Check these guys out: http://www.daveandjoel.com/
Fast Karate for the Gentlemen has been around for over six damn years. They're VERY casual and have an active forum. Hell, it started an occasional side-podcast about books. The forum IS referenced... but only once or twice an episode. They have one, maybe two things they know they'll talk about every week, but know when it's time to wrap it up. I'm not suggesting to emulate them. God, no. There's one Dave and Joel in this universe and it should stay that way. Though, bbobb sounds kinda like Dave... I WOULD suggest giving them a listen how they can be ridiculously casual and still have a structure, albeit loose.
Besides the inside baseball, the focus is really the only thing I'd say you guys have working against you. The topic of Japan was definitely addressed, but man were them tangents endless! Now, as a forum-goer, I actually really enjoyed the history and the nostalgia-talk. If I haven't been here for the insane amount of time I have, I probably would've just skipped ahead or shut it on off. It sounds like you guys don't know whether you want to be really loose or a bit more segmented like a TWiT podcast or something.
I'm really glad I listened, though. I'll be listening from here on in and I know you'll feel it out and find your way around this. The show is still really solid just because of everybody's natural chemistry. Guess that's what happens when everybody's been on the same boards for, what, ten years or so now? Cripes.
I agree with the prior comments, though. Put this shit right up front and center! If this is going to be one of the main functions of TNL now, make a subforum in Gaming Discussion!
Bahn- sorry, forgot my xbl name isn't listed- JohnNiner on Live. Rose player, we had a couple sets but Chun/Rose isn't the most exciting matchup, lots of pokes. I think it was a bit vanilla and a bit super.
About Monster Hunter 3, I'm actually thinking I'll 'finish' sometime soon so I can put it away and never play again. Mzo has kind of stopped playing because of the Vita too, what an jerk.
Nick, I know you guys are working on things and it is good and on the way up, so definitely good job so far. Topics are good, I think the staff themselves just need to know what their point is and get to it, more than the whole thing being on a super strict format.
Fighting ep was fun. Bahn's great.
Minus pts for random "faggot" drops.
MPoS withdrawl this week. :(
Content editing could get those faggots right the fuck out of hurr.
This week's podcast was one of the more interesting ones so far. There were some audio problems, but we got to talk about video game magazines, Web sites, and reviews.
I think we'll do a whole show on reviews somewhere down the line.
Can't wait to listen to this one, I thought when we were recording it it was really good.
I'm listening to it now and there is a short segment of Cowdisease talking about Ultra Game Players that didn't come out right. It's only about ten seconds.
Fortunately no one cares about Ultra Game Players or Cow so it's all good. ;)
Ko-nam-ee?
Oh good, they did bust on you for that.
There's more of that stuff in there, including a couple we didn't catch at the time. Maybe we'll get a tutor.
When I was a kid, EGM was my favorite mag, followed by Videogames and Computer Entertainment, followed by Gamepro. If it weren't for the fact that Gamepro regularly had S.W.A.T for Master System games. If it weren't for those, that magazine would have been completely useless to me.
Actually, now that I think about it I think I liked VG&CE best. It wasn't as flashy as EGM, but i remember it having lots of cool articles and they tried to cover all the systems, not just nintendo and sega.
Shoutout to Computer Games Strategy Plus, for the true pc gaming motherfuckers.
I never cared too much for the games that EGM would always fool people with for the April Fools jokes, so they never "got" me.
But when they announced Sega had found a warehouse full of Neptunes...I fell for it and called the number.
I liked Game Players...during the Saturn years. They seemed like they had a kind of Sega slant which I was happy to support. Chris State, Frank O Conner and Bill Donahue were pretty great. I loved the letters pages!

I tried leafing through a couple issues not long ago and wow...did not age well.
Shidoshi's pal always says Mare-ee-oh. Drives me insane!
Hey guys been listening to the podcast, it's good. Nice job!
Didn't Hardcore Gamer come about because of the Gamefan Thread here on TNL? Dudes were in that thread talking about the good old days and DJPubba said Hey, let's do it again, but this time I'm letting you know up front you won't be getting paid.
That's my recollection anyway.
Thanks for commenting, everyone. You are the warmth in my workday. Well, that and I got to play the Vita at lunch.
Isn't it neeshe and not nish?
Depends on how patriotic you are. Anyway, bbobb used "kun-TENT" for "KON-tent." That's when we knew we made our own rules.
In Iowa, they have editorial kuhntent
Hahaha I remember that video.
Protip:
Protip: I'm not sure that was even the dumbest one, that's just the famously dumb one.
I finished off a lot of games that week after playing them off and on for the last few months, then started a bunch of new ones.
Nick should've cut out like three of the games I talked about. I'm just going to pick one or two a week to mention, this shit isn't my LiveJournal account and that went on for way too long.
Don't start censoring yourself. Let nick do that in post.
The edits are kind of noticeable and annoying.
Practice makes perfect.
Oddly enough, a few of the spots that sound like edits aren't. A couple of us talk kind of funny. The most annoying thing that made it on this week was that metallic rattling late in the show whenever I was talking.
Oil can.
That's... that's horrible.
Best one, I think.
I gave this another shot, it's still awful.
I'm really enjoying this one, it brought back some memories I haven't thought of in a long time. I subscribed to Nintendo Power as a kid and I remember checking the mail every day around the time I thought it would arrive, then reading it with my brothers and fighting over who got the poster (we usually just left them inside, but occasionally there'd be a really cool one).
We get Nintendo Power in the office.
Gave it look (and it's been years since I read one). Not great but not bad. It reminded me of what Mzo said about Nintendo's advertising - it and the mag are very much concerned with just showing Nintendo shit off. I remember OPSM and OBXM LOVED to shit talk about each other, rather than just celebrate their platforms.
Really good podcast guys! Although damn you Mzo for making me think of Pit Fighter, I was one of those "OMG THEY LOOK LIKE REAL DUDES I MUST PLAY THIS GAME" kids, and I both loved and hated it when I was younger.
I used to go to the library and read all the Nintendo Powers. It was the only gaming magazine they had and my family only had an NES so I was quite happy with that, but I would sit there and read every single page and try and memorize all the maps for games I would never end up playing. Had one piece of envelope art make it into an issue, too! (I probably sent in about 15). Still have that somewhere, Volume 109 from June 199...7,8, or 9? The last number is cut off on the page I ripped out.
That was my favorite part! I'd be interested in seeing yours, I sent them a few letters once and decorated the envelope. I wish I would have snapped a quick picture before sending it in.Quote:

Some nerd was just in here with a Videogame Collectors Magazine. Any of you guys familiar with it?
I'm so glad Nick called Mzo out on his palette pronunciation. No one jumped on him when he said it and I was really concerned.
So, when you guys talked about Blu-Ray/HD-DVD I thought to myself "well duh, TNL's always backing the wrong/unpopular things"
You could make a killing by just looking at how much shit talk the forum does to a company, then invest in them. Heavily.
Welcome to the internet/life
I wish we had individual threads for each podcast so we could discuss the relevant events and happenings and not continue the really shitty TNL habit of making one big-ass, catch-all thread that newcomers would find extremely annoying to follow.
Why don't we again?
The database Mzo, it's always about the database.
oh man, Mzo's got it all wrong. When I used to ride the bus, there were plenty of kids playing PSPs. More than DSes anyway. Not that it proves anything, other than anecdotal or stereotyped (adults like Sony, kids like Nintendo) evidence really aren't.
I've seen thousands of kids with GBAs and DSs everywhere and maybe ONE person, not a kid, playing a PSP in the wild. Like once.
I wonder if it's a regional thing then?
Out in L.A., it's easy to find some kid (under 18-20) playing their PSP. DSes? I guess less hardcore/legit/whateverthefuck, so kids don't want to be caught with one.
If so, it's regional to Miami and the Chicago suburbs.
I've never seen a kid playing a PSP
Mzo! We forgot to plug PAX-E in the podcast.
You guys should do a live broadcast from PAX and get George's drunk ass on it. He'll probably drop a few N bombs
Yeah. Hopefully the next one gets out before April 6th. Are we three or four weeks back now?
I would love to do one live from PAX. If we bring laptops and use the fancy room we would have the technology. It'd be amazing if we could hijack shidoshi for it, but he probably has really awesome industry parties to go to all the time.
Fuck, two weeks! Man.
Almaci can introduce us to Toshihiro Nagoshi
I'm making a central podcast page and each individual podcast will be treated like an even bigger deal. They used to have their own threads, but that was in the news section. Podcast threads should either be in Gaming Discussion, like now, or underneath each week's show notes, like they will be.
Man, you've lived in some great places.
Don't think that just having better public transportation makes you all that.
I also haven't lived in Pittsburgh.
My day always brightens when theres a new episode of The Mzo Show, or Mzow as the cool kids call it.
The Mzo-bro Podcast of Secrets, if you will. You will!
Funny, I listened to the podcast at work after playing my PSP on the train.
I figure it's because kids usually have the Nintendo systems and get dragged to places they don't want to be. As an adult with a PSP when I go somewhere it's with a specific purpose, then I race home to play.
Since I have a car I miss out on the wonders of public transportation, which could also explain why I don't see that many commuters playing.
John wanted me to point out that we did see a kid with a PSP like a week ago when we went to Best Buy, and that I'm a huge liar! So that's like 2 now.
I'd also like to acknowledge that, while I was playing Persona 3 off of the memory stick, Monster Hunter 2 Freedom was in the UMD drive.
Now that Mzo got all his PS Vita rocks off - never let him talk about it again
