If you really want that, I can do it. But I don't want anyone to think I'm just being a negative douche (which would be understandable, because I certainly can be like that at times) and just shitting on everyone; because in this instance, it's really not like that.
If I were trying out a new podcast and the guys on the show first of all couldn't be bothered to look at the show prep and on top of that spout inaccuracies quite often, well, I wouldn't bother listening to that podcast. There's too many other things I can fill that time with.
I looked back over your comments in this thread, and I think "spout inaccuracies quite often" is in itself inaccurate. We (I) did confuse Magnavox with Sanyo when making an aside about the 3DO, but that was about the worst of it before we agreed it was Sega Rally and not Sega GT in that dual pack.
That said, I should have double-checked that Sega fact in post-production. This upcoming Treasure trilogy should be pretty tight with research before the recordings, and we can do more fact-checking during the shows when tangents come up.
I didn't call out everything I heard...but I get the message. I will drop it.
This opinion may be worth what Nick paid for it, but this is the reason I never started listening. The show went for "entertainment" over information from the very first discussion, which just doesn't interest me in the least. Many of the posts in this thread have just confirmed what I had originally assumed.
edit: For the record, entertainment and information don't have to be mutually exclusive, but you have to cast people with knowledge and a sense of humor, probably in that order.
Thus expansion should take place, branding characters only makes it a click that appeals to a few members like SSJN whose nose is so far up Nick's tush it's been brown for days.
Yeah, I describe it as sounding "the way you talk about games with your friends," if you have friends that are familiar with five tons of games. With the Treasure series, we will be getting descriptive about the basics of the games (I think our BioWare show should have focused more on making newcomers want to experience these titles). We must resist this tendency to inbreed.
Incest only leads to retardation. Good idea for expansion.
Monolith is not a UK company. They're here in Kirkland, WA.
Sorry, I was fooled by the teeth on their "About" page.

That'll be sure to rake in the endorsements!
Not a huge fan of the opening anymore for some reason. I think you guys should try this one out. If you ever have Finch on as a guest, you need this opening.

lol, epmode and I have been singing pa pam pam pam all weekend.
The opening should be Mzo and epmode singing that song
I finally remembered to buy a $25 piece of shit MP3 player and download these. It's a nice change from BBC news on NPR every goddamned night. Only got through half of the first one so far.
In looking at your upcoming schedule and in re-reviewing this thread, I think that there should be an entire episode for TNL's history, or at least the last ten years of it, as was discussed in the SO thread recently. Everyone who regularly posts here has stories to tell about how they arrived and remained here, and has opinions of most anyone else who has done the same. It could potentially make the show and site more accessible to the ever elusive New User market. It would also help to establish your identity and define what it is about your video game podcast which makes you all think it is worthwhile.
Agreed Dog "New User" market is a great target. Part of my business I can share is a "Think Tank" to help others improve projects and opening wider audiences. I'm not offended by profanity but it should be used sparingly for the under 18 audience. Use statistics and figure out what podcast was listened to most and what worked. Try branching out with a segment on rap or Macs and see if that changes anything.
Just caught up on the last episode.
Hexic is a wonderful game, fuck all of you except Mzo.
Didn't the creator of Tetris develop that game during his time at Microsoft?
Yeah it was the Tetris guy. I agree that Hexic is rad! The 'grand pearl pooh bah' that mzo mentioned was the hardest achievement in the game, which no one understood because he was kind of just rambling.
It took me forever to catch up on these cause I was out of town so I don't think feedback is relevant anymore on the old episodes. Basically, I thought the console discussion was okay, rating the launches was kind of random. The discussion was almost too predictable- very old stuff was, 'yeah, that was good for the day, lol at graphics'. the next gen was 'wow, I loved that shit when it came out, so awesome', and current gen was 'lol so bad, lets hate on everything'. I didn't mind the factual errors so much, and thought the old discussions were actually better than the current stuff.
Good discussions but I still feel like if someone doesn't know exactly what you guys know, it just turns into babble, there's little attempt at setting a foundation to anything. I don't have any examples sorry, except maybe the Mass Effect talk: whenever ME comes up, its just a private conversation between fans of ME that we're hearing for some reason. You talk about specific missions, characters, cut scenes, mechanics, make a point/joke, and everyone laughs. I can understand where you're coming from but I haven't played ME, and if I didn't care about it, it would have gotten tired a long time ago. I think anything you mention (like games you've been playing), you should assume your audience hasn't played, and approach it from that angle. If 2 of you have played a certain game, it quickly turns into details that would be lost on someone who hasn't played. I have other random thoughts but this is bitchy enough.
I'd like to come on someday as a guest, but you already talked about all the topics I think I'd be a help in. Plus I'm boring. But maybe that would be fine cause you guys are colorful enough.
Edit: random- I think the problem with the intro is 30 seconds I think is way too long without even starting to talk. Its a great song, but a pretty impersonal intro.
I'M COMMANDER SHEPHERD AND THIS IS MY FAVOURITE PODCAST LOLOLOL
US GAMERS
The episode that I wanted to post today is all kinds of trouble. Two of the files are a mess. I will be lucky to have a 40%-decent version up on Friday.
I leave town for a week and look what happens.
You were in this podcast.
I have lost all track of time at this point.
It is.
Personally I don't always like big discussions on basic game mechanics because I feel like those can be really basic and drag things down, and we're just talking about the facts of how something plays which has little real personal input. I think some of the Street Fighter descriptions got me through a couple levels in various games and I was in those podcasts. But you're right in that we could stand to have a brief description of what we're about to discuss to familiarize the audience.
I also avoid them because it tends to make me ramble on tangents, like this last podcast where I just wanted to mention FFVII was a cinematic RPG and somehow rambled on about the music for reasons I don't even understand.
Ramble on. Edit for content. Fuck the Knicks.
I have been doing the "describe _____ for those who've never played it" thing, but we never do it for Mass Effect. I'm also going to be adding more value to the new podcast pages beginning with the first Treasure show, so you might see more focus. The show had definitely been getting more fine-tuning.
God, I wish I could work TNL as a full-time job. There is so much to do every day. Pages of to-dos.
Nick you do a pretty good job of trying to wrangle the cats.
Maybe there wouldn't have to be so much work if you let more people help, and if you told your boyz ahead of time to stop using profanity to get themselves over that would help. "Korian's Think Tank Copyright"
I wish there was more wrestling discussion on the podcast
YES YES YES
Make your own podcast if you want to talk about male ballet.
I will not download any TNL podcast which features a single second of wrestling discussion as the main topic. Fuck that bullshit.
One of my friends outside TNL started bugging me to do a wrestling podcast as soon as he heard I was participating in this one. That'd mean watching wrestling consistently and making some attempt to catch up on what's been happening there since . . . oh, 1989.
For the last few years, I've watched about four pay-per-views a year, and I do play the video games when they come out, but I'm just not into it enough to do a show, unless it concentrated on the old territory days. I don't watch 99% of what happens on TV, so what am I going to do - regurgitate what I read in the Wrestling Observer?
I did consider starting up a wrestling site, since most of the existing ones feel like malware machines, but, really, the Observer just needs a little work and it'd be fine.
If you need any updates or help we have a number of wrestling experts. Or how about just a small segment on the podcast about Brock returning?
Well, round 'em up and make your own podcast. I have more than enough to do right now.
I would listen to jemery talkin' wrasslin. I would listen to korian too if he dropped the fake mongloid voice he called in with and got real.
Do it differently, babe. God speed.
I love that Nick basically said leave quickly.
Yeah lots of discussion about mechanics is bad.. but if you need to describe that much in detail just to get to your point, then the point probably shouldn't have been brought up (whatever you're saying is an obscure part of the game). But its a fine line, and everyone probably thinks a little differently about it. This is also probably more about the 'what I've been playing' section and not the main topic, main topic you should go into as much detail as needed. IMO. About editing, My gut says less editing the better, but in reality its probably already edited a ton, and maybe that is just the answer.
You definitely have tried to lay down a basic groundwork for a lot of stuff, and keep people on topic, and I think it helps. All the stuff I said before doesn't apply to everyone or all of the shows. In general though that's the feeling I get, where improvement would help a lot. The show has gotten a lot better, from all of the cast, so definitely good work.
You wouldnt believe how much editing goes into it already. You may think Mzo goes off on tangents but what you hear is nothing compared to the unedited tangents he goes off on
Actually just noticed who I was replying to. Never mind you would believe. You already know how Mzo gets when he gets going
As someone who doesn't watch Wrestling at all, I was able to "catch up" on 50 different "OMG!!!" moments from WWE history thanks to something on Netflix called "The top 50 OMG WWE moments" or something just as silly. Watched from 50 to about 12 last night, some of it was actually VERY entertaining. Just something fun to check out if you're a dude who likes wrasslin'.
I do intend, but the part the bothers me the most is your total lack to evolve after numerous suggestions. Nick not catering to different demographics will be your eventual downfall, not even being to meet deadlines ouch. Are trying run a legit podcast? or a circle jerk? This is amateur hour at it's worst. It really seemed promising but your aloof beliefs make me glad I would never get involved in a clusterfuck, card me all you want but honesty is what is truly lacking on TNL these days. Chux don't include me as I am helping your wifey lose that extra fat on her legs by ticking her with unabashed abandon.
Stop trolling my threads and go produce something yourself, besides your inane performance art - or whatever it is you do here. You've already had extended bans for attention-whoring, and this "think tank" nonsense and posting your name everywhere has put you on the cusp of a permanent ban. Biff protocols.
Produce five decent podcasts or run a busy forum for a couple of months and then come back so we can compare notes.
TNL is a busy forum? The podcasts were decent?
As long as winners like you participate in the forum and have listened to even one second of one podcast, I feel like it's all worthwhile.
I hope Korian creates the next Facebook.
Nick needs to be humbled.
Winners don't use drugs though...
Can I get on your podcast Jeremy? What the fuck is B thrifty?
Don't have a podcast yet, and B-Thrifty is a thrift store within walking distance of my house with tremendous clothing deals and to a lesser extent, good ones on games and DVDs as well.
Having heard more:
What I get out of TNL board is that we're all knowledgeable about most anything to the extent we want to care about it. The few people left who write insightful posts on a subject usually do so in a language that makes sense to them alone without consideration if anyone else can really understand it. The posts aren't dumbed down. Icarus talks about his food as he wants to talk about it, and only explains things if you ask. Ramon and Anthony discuss fighters using terms and acronyms which most anyone else would need a dictionary to decipher. Gooch writes about the economy as he understands it. My blog posts about me playing IIDX probably don't make any sense to anyone here except Tain and Compass, but I write them as I would want someone else who plays the game like I do to write them. I think this specialized knowledge and passion is what makes the board distinguished.
What I get out of TNL podcasts is that you are making great pains to ensure that everyone is on the same page to understand what the discussion is about and the basis behind opinions, and I see this as contrary to how the board functions. A few times I noticed people refrained from mentioning a game to expound upon the discussion topic, because "I'm the only one who played it" - well who fucking cares! Most of us here aren't idiots. We can look things up and pause a podcast to look things up if we need to, or replay the podcast otherwise. If you want to bring up something that you deem relevant to the conversation, do it, and get to the crux immediately. You don't need to spend a quarter or more of your air time to re-establish the basic facts about your topic. We can go to literally thousands of other places if we want to get the rudimentary facts about something. I think what makes you all unique is your individual and combined experience in these things, and it is that perspective and diversity of opinions which is what should be the focus of the show.
I think Mzo ends up talking most of the time because he seems to have the highest emotional response to most any topic at hand and has something to instantly respond with at all times; and even if every tenth game is The Worst Game Of All Time according to him, that's at least something more interesting than polite indifference. If the rest of you think Mzo needs to shut up, give him a reason to - counter his statements with your own, interject over him more often, talk him down, and fight fire with fire. If the show is to be about virtually sitting at a round table with a group of pals to bullshit about games, then get to that part and stay at that part, and quit assuming we'll get lost along the way.
You should also consider liming the speaking cast to three main persons and one guest at most. I would think there would be more liberty in speaking if people weren't concerned about fairly sharing time and giving adequate chance for everyone to respond.
Mzo talks the most because Mzo loves to talk. Us RFers have known this for years.
You should have heard the rant he went on about religion one night when no one at all cared or was even responding to him. It was like 30 min long.
IT WAS ALL TRUE
When I met Mzo he talked just the right amount.
It was hard to talk when I met Mzo because something was in his mouth
It was my balls, not my dick
Soon, dear boy.
New call I left you, apology left. New idea! Avengers Assemble or not?
Have you guys ever considered doing a video blog type of podcast...maybe with a twitch.tv channel where you can have visual aid along with the topic of discussion? Screenshots for relevant games and such.
That may be a bit further than many of you are willing to take this, as it would certainly require a bit more editing/splicing/special effects, etc, but it would be neat to see. At least consider doing it for some sort of milestone episode: 50'th, 100'th, etc.
I've definitely thought about doing that, yeah.
I know a guy at Twitch who can hook you up:
http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/2...9-39381959.jpg
Just want to remind everyone that this is still a thing that exists. I think.
We're waiting.
You should definitely go elsewhere, I know you can find a place that truly appreciates your talents.
I'm taking a few TNL friends with me so they can get in on my project.
No you're not.
Dead?
No. I'm transitioning to a four-day workweek and will have a lot more time to take care of this. We have a few episodes in post-production and will get back to weekly releases. At least one will be out this week.
Cool.
In.
Agreed, the WWE stuff on Netflix rules. The WCCW stuff was enlightening (the Von Erichs), the Crockett Promotions stuff amazing. I didn't realize Dusty Rhodes was such a force behind the scenes. If you haven't seen the Mulkey Brothers vs. the Gladiators, it was one of my favorite matches of all times, check it out.
But rather than wrestling into video game podcasts, what we really need is a TNL magazine. I'm ready for GG issue 3. How much would that cost to produce?
Mulkeymania running wild on TNL!
My hopes skyrocket every time I see you post in this thread, Nick.
We recorded the last of the Treasure episodes this past Sunday and will resume weekly publication after E3 (also marking the start of TNL's fifteenth year). I am only going to work four days a week starting this month, so I hope to get a lot of Internet work done now that I have more flexibility.
Here is the release schedule for the next several weeks:
June 15 - Thoughts on E3 2012
June 20 - The Games of Treasure, Volume I
June 27 - The Games of Treasure, Volume II
July 4 - Lost Episode: PAX
July 11 - The Games of Treasure, Volume III
Thanks for your patience over the last two months.
Sounds good. Looking forward to it.
Glad to see the return, I will send you a proposal of some ideas of mine Nick.
I'm never going to listen to another podcast. You can't treat your fanbase this way.
David, that is like peeing in a dead horse's mouth after your bat broke.
I'll vote with my dollar. The GameFAQS podcast is always up on time.
Is the format for the Treasure trio like this?
1. Gunstar Heroes
2. Guardian Heroes
3. Why everything else Treasure has made is overrated
Because it should be.
4. Talk about the microchips inside of the Gunstar Heroes cartridge
We just had that conversation in the NES thread. The NES versions of some Konami games weren't as good as their Famicom counterparts because of missing microchips inside the cartridges. That's the podcast I want to listen to. And, yes, I know I represent a group of like 5 people on TNL probably.
Your mom was missing microchips inside her cartridge.
I replaced them though, with my dick.
Do it. I'd listen to that.
I knew about CV3 having some crazy sound chip, but that was about it.
edit: I would listen to both Yoshi's podcast and Dave doing his mother.
He should still be around even though we don't.
Busy to PM but my idea is "Breaking Stereotypes and Boundaries in Gaming"
I'd like to hear about the chips, too. There was always a lot of talk about the MMC chips in the video game mags, as well as the SuperChip, SuperFX, and Sega's SVP. I remember reading that SMB2(j) was rejected in favor of SMB2(US) in part due to the improved technology and the desire to show the system's stuff.
The chips were one of the greatest advantages of cartridges over CDs. The Aladdin Deck Enhancer that would save you from repurchasing those chips over and over. The conflicts between the SVP and the 32X. Lots of good stuff....
The 15th has come and gone :(
