pirating will probably never go away. As long as we have 14 year olds with no money, no car, and access to a family computer it is going to happen.
Or people with money, cars, and access to a computer that act like 14 year olds.
There is also the mentality of they are doing it "because they can." But yes, the 14 year old thing is a big deal. I remember when I was 15 and modding my PS1 so that I could download and burn games since I couldn't afford to buy games... and then also because I could do it I never felt the need to buy a game. Once I got a job though I kept things legit, but I know others that kept on with the copies.
I rarely bothered with it. I think the ONLY times I've ever done it was for long dead Super Robot Wars games on the PS1 when the translation patches came out. And even then, I eventually ordered the original disks from japan when the prices died down.
Which brings up another negative about DD. If we ever go full DD, don't expect to see the same discounts of the past. There will be no physical store stock and thus no need to clear shelf space. XBLA and PSN will probably continue to run specials on specific games each month, but you won't be able to buy huge piles of cheap games like we are all accustomed to.
There won't be anymore "waiting for the drop"
You're confusing awful console makers with DD. What you just posted could not be further from the truth on PC, Mac, iOS, Android, etc.
edit: The new Duke Nukem is $5 on Steam right now for example. Let me know when you can get a new physical copy of any current gen game for that.
Because shelf space is the only reason anyone would ever run a promotion yes.
Pirating is the only consistent method of preservation the games industry has, and will probably remain that way for at least most of our lifetimes. If we're lucky it won't go away until it isn't needed anymore and that's not happening anytime soon.
User-based illegal copies are also the main reason most of TV, movie, and music history have remained with us to this day. The production companies don't care about that unless they can make an easy buck off it and even then they're sometimes too mired in legalities for things to be released back into the public.
Have you even looked at the PC market in the last few years? Digital distribution has overtaken retail a while back and digital-exclusive sales are all over the place. Incredible sales even.
But yeah, it'll probably be worse for consoles since I don't see the manufacturers allowing competition onto their own digital store.
edit: Oh god I'm late.
that is 1 game.
I'm talking about how you assholes go to Target and buy ten marked down games that are only 6 to 12 months old. Are you really so dense that you think buying Duke Nukem for 5$ has anything to do with people buying piles of cleared out current games? Wtf is wrong with you?
