Well, the alternatives are either impossible or more immoral.

You either

A. Let people aborted unwanted children
B. Wait for people with a known track record of bad decisions to suddenly start making good ones.
C. Make kids be raised in homes that didn't want them.
D. *Bonus Round* take away all gov hand out programs and socialist programs and wait for the poor/misfortunate/stupid to eat themselves alive and/or die the the gutter.

Why wait on C and D? Why not go ahead and off the kid? Because the kid doesn't get a say? What about the parent's say? It is their genetics. That is a little bit of their body running around. Who gets more say than them? At the moment of termination, a baby is no more intelligent than a foot or leg. Hell, some bugs are probably smarter. Are you going to stop be from killing bugs? I don't even own the bugs. But a mom owns the baby before it develops a brain. It is part of her body. How can you own anything more than you own your own body?

Being against the availability of abortion is not a rational decision. It is almost 100% emotional or at the very least a bad gamble. People take that stance because dead babies make them FEEL bad. Or they want to gamble with the economy with the hopes that suddenly a whole group of people will change.

It's principles, IP. The principle that human life is more valubale than the quality of said life. It's the same principle for euthanasia and Terri Schiavo, Kevorkian and all. It's not retarded or emotional, it's just obstinate.

On the religious connection: I guess we all have something we haven't thought through all the way. I was pro-life when I was 10, but I've been pro-choice pretty much since then, and I've never pretended that either stance is common sense.

It's profoundly sad to me that anyone resorts to abortion. If the world were a better place (no rape, no pregnancies in homes that are too poor or too dysfunctional, etc.), there wouldn't be any demand for the procedure. I'm willing to believe many conservatives have good intentions in this area, and they are quite capable of changing their minds, but it's more difficult when they're repeatedly being called stupid.

I've heard of consumers boycotting Chik-fil-A because of the "anti-gay" position of its owners. If that's enlightened activism, why is it "reptilian" for someone that finds abortion distasteful to want nothing to do with Planned Parenthood? The problem is that there is no viable alternative for some women. (Of course, this is a lot more important than fast food, but the point is that some folks across the aisle are genuinely motivated by moral considerations that we might disagree with.)

So it's not barbaric to dislike Planned Parenthood, nor is it realistic to expect it to go away. Both sides can benefit from toning down the posturing. Making the decision to abort is hard enough as it is.

Because there are rational well thought out reasons to support planned parenthood and/or abortion. And there are well thought out and rational reasons to support people having the choice to be gay, safe, and have relationships with the titles and legal protections that they desire.

The opposition is almost always founded on emotionally driven reasoning or adherence to out dated philosophies from cultures over 2000 years old.

You may think you're being clever, but a lot of people defend that line of thinking. That it is better to pay more for a couple smaller well made meals than many crappy meals.

Have you been in any of the health threads? Read anything about poverty based obesity? There is a direct connection between the poverty of MS and its obesity rate.
