It didn't need one when the series was...sort of remotely relevant as like a C-level platformer.

But there's probably even less chance of getting a bunch of people to hand them a bunch of money without even drawing a sketch for that.
I really don't understand how some of these people will come to the table with absolutely nothing like this. Sure, I guess Double Fine did it, but they're Double Fine, and with the documentary that was part of the point. And even then, look what happened.
People need to get a feel for a project's vision before they back, and they also want to see that a company is at least capable of doing some work on their own. As it stands there's no way to even judge if the project's goals are reasonable. Real companies that come to the table extrememly prepared still struggle to get a couple hundred thousand, and I'm not sure why they think the James Pond license is strong enough to overcome that.
Yea, with Mutant League and General Chaos people at least fondly remember those games. Whether or not they will buy a new one in 2013 is another question - I wouldn't - but people are like "Mutant League? Loved that game on Genesis."
I've never read or heard anyone reminisce about James Pond, though. Ever.
I don't agree. That stumpy pixel art stuff has got to go.
It wasn't good. The way each level had specific tasks (rescue fishes, unlock cages, etc) rather than just "go to the exit" was interesting, but a platformer lives or dies on how good it feels to move around, and James Pond feels super floaty. A large number of completely blind jumps don't help. And, fittingly for the setting, there's a lot of swimming. Swimming feels terrible in most games, and James Pond is no exception.
Kinda really loving the look of Kromaia, over at Indiegogo-
James
That sure does look like a James game. Kind of like a Rez meets Zone of Enders or something. I can dig it.
James Pond wasn't even a good joke, let alone a good game.
Who are you and what have you done with jyoung?
So Takedown: Red Sabre, which originated as the "Hardocore Tactical Shooter" that launched around the same time as Double Fine Adventure is finally out, and is apparently so ungodly broken that backers are screaming for refunds. Apparently the AI in single-player is more or less non-functional, and the multiplayer matchmaking is so fucked up you can't even get a match. Some have claimed it's a good multiplayer game if you get enough people together and join by IP, but no one's going to do that shit.
I guess they can't all be winners.
