With only 15 days until E3 2012, a rumor regarding Retro Studios' next game is beginning to spread. Apparently teams at Retro were split between working with the Star Fox franchise or developing a new third-person action game that also involved air combat. Nintendo proposed an alternative, which is now being called 'Star Fox - Metroid: Fusion Saga.'

The project's story is simple enough. During an intergalactic warp, Fox and his crew crash into Samus Aran's ship. Samus is sent crashing to an unknown planet below. Missions then unfold as Fox attempts to find Samus while she explores the world around her. Eventually the two Nintendo icons meet to confront Fox villain Andross, who is attempting to harness the power of the symbiotic Metroid creatures.

True to each franchise, Star Fox segments of the game are based on high-action, high energy third-person air and land-based combat, both in Arwings and on-foot. Conversely Metroid portions of the title are more isolated, lonely, and based on the first-person perspective introduced with Metroid Prime.

Again, whether this is a game fully in production, a proposed idea that never made it past the conceptual stage, or simply wishful thinking, is hard to say at this point. The PGN blog has proved credible in the past, but the concept seems so far-fetched it's still hard to believe, regardless of the source. Crossovers happen often in the industry, particularly with Nintendo characters, but why these two concepts wouldn't simply become their own titles - even if both were being developed by Retro - is difficult to understand.

However, with E3 2012 just two weeks away, we should know soon enough.

I have to admit that I would be intrigued by that combination, regardless of how ridiculous it sounds.

Putting two mildly popular (by Nintendo standards) franchises in one game...I don't know if that means the sales would be more or less than the sum of the individual franchises. I would imagine less. Which makes this harder to believe.

I want Nintendo to go 3rd party so I can start playing their games again.

This sounds kinda stupid.

Sounds to me like they are trying to finish of the Metroid franchise once and for all. I hope this is a BS rumor.

That would be even worse. The only way this can be salvaged is if it's actually Captain N. Captain N at launch, pls.

The origin of this rumor though is from that Paul Gale or something like that network, and the dude has been right about VERY VERY FEW things. I would not put a lot into this actually happening.

Well, Retro is working on something, and we don't know what. It might not be this, but whatever it is, I am sure it will be great.

That I can agree with. They've been on a hiring spree lately, I forget all the ones people have found. I think one was a dude from Naughty Dog who worked on the Uncharted games doing environment stuff, I think they also got some one from Crytek, can't remember though.

If this is for real, what a blast from the past. Not for the bizarro franchise mashup aspect, but for the two or more totally disparate gameplay styles in one game. That happened all the time on PSone/N64, but the closest we get lately is FPSs with vehicle segments that still control exactly like your FPS dude.

It would be better if it were Kirby and Metroid.

Gunpei Yokoi is going to rise from his grave as some sort of Katana-wielding zombie and slay everyone at Nintendo for this (and probably Team Ninja as well).

Gunpei Yokoi's involvement in Metroid has been GREATLY exaggerated over the years.

Yeah, EVERYONE credits Gunpei Yokoi with Metroid, because everyone knows who that is even, unlike that Miyamoto fellow who never gets any credit for all those games he had a producer credit in. I've never seen a person with more undeserved credit than Gunpei Yokoi EVER.

That's the kind of thing i would say if i was a dirty Yamauchi sympathizer.

Nintendo has explained why it decided not to include online multiplayer in Wii U launch title Nintendo Land.

Developers wanted to encourage players to interact in the real world, with the virtual theme park's attractions specifically designed for players sitting next to each other.

It's the same reason they gave for not including achievements. "We wanted to let the players choose how to play the game by giving them one less choice."
