Well thank goodness we're getting them out of the way so soon.
I don't see how anyone can deny that Mario platformers are practically an annual franchise now. At the very least, the release schedule is on par with something like Assassin's Creed.
I still think NSMB U looks really good, it looks pretty fun and the design seems promising. I understand where some of the disappointment or indifference comes from, as this isn't a landmark system-selling launch title that grabs you and really wows you.
While this isn't the perfect launch title, it will most likely be a very effective one. Nintendo needs to put a 2D Mario on every one of their platforms going forward because of its universal appeal and casual user entry, just re-selling roms of their older games isn't enough (and most of those are probably a bit too challenging). I'm still enjoying - very much so in fact - NSMB 2 right now.
Come Fall 2013, near the end of the Wii U's first year, I expect that we'll see highly-anticipated releases of the new 3D Mario game and Retro Studios' new IP, probably coinciding with the PS4 and Durango launches. Those games, among potential others, will probably do a better job of actually selling gamers on the Wii U hardware than NSMB U.
At the very least, on par. Who could deny such a thing?

Edit:
Grouping the 3D platformers with the 2D games isn't the same thing as the Assassin's Creed series in full. But I'll include them in the above for you.
Breaking: Galaxy and 3D Land are not platformers.
Yeah, they're nothing like Contra!
I think including them is fine if you were also counting the DS games for AC.
Fuck it, put that abysmal and shameful Mario All-Stars ROM on a Wii disc on there.
Nintendo's on a 1 Mario game per year cycle, basically. The games are good (even though the New series is aesthetically awful) but a new Mario game is no longer a system defining event.
