That comic made its way to the 360 version, AFAIK.
Yeah 2 is also very good, gunna go through that one first and then import that Sheppard and restart 3.
ME1 is massively flawed, but it has an enormous sense of scale. It feels like a really big game. It's a sense that ME2, for all its improvements, lost. ME3 recovered it to some extent.
I think ME1 is worth playing for that sense of scale alone.
The problem with ME1 is that everything except for that sense of scale and backstory is just awful.
The combat mechanics are terrible.
The inventory system is the worst I've ever seen in a game.
The Mako controls like shit.
The planets are annoying to explore about 80% of the time (whenever the Mako has to go up an incline).
The subquests are all the same shit, and are terrible.
And even the best sequences in the game (like the end battles) haven't aged well at all. I don't think the game is worth going through in order to look at a bigger Citadel and a slightly more detailed Codex.
I will retain my fond memories of it until the day I revisit the series through PC, and then I will probably hate myself.
Who came up with the 'turn shit into gel, rub gel on shit' idea? That dont make no sense!
Proper use of the tablet could be cool.
Not holding my breath on seeing "proper" use.
Inventory on the tablet, can turn everything into gel in record time.
I heard the PC version eliminates some of the big problems with the 360 version, namely performance, interface, and Mako controls. But it still has the bad combat and subquests.
If I had to make a list of most overrated games ever, Mass Effect 1 would be very high on it.
Now that you've brought it up, you do have to.
LIST-O-MANIA TIME!!!!
I don't internet anywhere but TNL, so your link is useless to me.
Whore.
I wouldn't buy the system for that game, but I would buy that game for that system (since I hold out for inevitable GOTY collections and what not.)
Thinking about replaying FF9, or the sega cd Lunars
Or I might go back and finish the PS2 DQ, or P3FE
Phantasy Star 2 & 4, Ocarina of Time 3DS, THEATRHYTHM, Dungeon Defenders, and Spelunky.
I need to finish playing Dragon Quest 4, I must be near the end since I have most of the Zenithian equipment, but I hooked my Neo up and fuuuuuck Metal Slug and Fatal Fury Special are fun.
I'm playing Dead Island, which is actually pretty fun despite being yet another zombie game (and a pretty repetitive one at that). I'm also playing Cabela's Survival, which I got for $15 new. It's a light gun game meets Uncharted, and I appreciate the design changes made to this series. I was surprised at how playable it is.
Aside from that, I'm still playing Master System games. I almost beat Zillion 2 the other day, but level 7 is just brutal. I'd play some NES, but I need some new games. ;)
...
I am very upset at Mass Effect 2 for giving me the option to walk through my ship and step into the air lock but NOT allowing me to eject myself into the icy blackness of space. Who says Shepard doesn't want to commit suicide? Hopefully they addressed this glaring oversight in 3.
I'm playing Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2. In many ways, this is like the laziest sequel ever -- many of the minor character sprites are DIRECTLY ripped from DS. But in many other, more important ways, the changes that they DID make make it a really really awesome sequel.
These MegaTen games remind me of the old Gold Box games on PC. Sure the systems were basically the same from game to game, but it was D&D and it was awesome and so you didn't care.
Those changes for the better, is that in comparison to just the original Devil Survivor or does that also include Devil Survivor Overlocked (nice job recently completing that btw) as well?
I've got a copy of DS Overclocked I'm looking forward to playing sometime soon, as my long-overdue entry to MegaTen.
Yeah, pretty much every MegaTen game is a massive time suck. But once you get the hang of the MegaTen style, it's really addicting.
There's no way of knowing if DS 2 will get the Overclocked treatment. But I doubt it. Overclocked really did add a lot of content and I don't think it really sold that much.
Yeah, it improves upon the DS original and Overclocked. Overclocked doesn't improve upon DS's core mechanics, it just adds voice acting, a ton of new story content, and more demons. So it actually represents a huge improvement over DS/Overclocked's mechanics (which were already pretty solid).
In DS 2, the auctions are more than just glorified demon merchants. There's a little bit more strategy in bidding, because you can read the inclinations of the other bidders, in that you can actually tell if they're going to bid high or low. There are also special auctions that occasionally appear which offer 5-star demons with special skills, often skills that you would not have access to at your current level.
There are also a lot more playable characters that you gain access to earlier in the game. In DS/Overclocked, depending on the route you chose, you could end up with as few as 5 or as many as 8. In either case you had to spend 20-30 hours before getting more than 4 selectable characters. In DS 2, I'm about 5 hours in and I'm about to have 6 possible characters to choose from.
Still playing that Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL.
I thought I would have returned this already, but alas, I've been playing it off and on for like two weeks now. Got the " difficult" achievements out of the way with the exception of maybe one more.
Once I went back through on Hard mode, I found a decent stage to milk for coins to unlock stages/costumes/characters, so that's comforting. I'll have 1000/1000 by tonight if I want to.
Its still a ways away from smash bros, but not nearly as bad as I had originally interpreted it to be.
Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix+ - Level 76, game cleared, Ultima made, Sephiroth down, 3/12 Mushroom XIIIs, all stage memories killed, 300/301 treasures, and 100% puzzles so far. Just need to grind a bit more to hit 99 and I think I'll have to farm the data memories to get my stats high enough to handle fighting Terra's armor.
And a partridge in a pear tree...
Almost ran through The Darkness 2 yesterday. Much better than the tacked-on co-op. I am very interested in seeing how the story wraps up.
ME1 is a bitter pill to swallow. The game is OK, but too long with the planet mechanics. If you REALLY like the ME universe it might be worth it to experience a lot of the small decisions the comics gloss over.
Im currently still working through ME3. I was hoping to work through Tuchanka but havent had enough time.
Im looking at picking up Demon Souls once im done ME3 and wrap up Skyrim. Demon Souls or Alan Wake.
I am not sure i want to play Diablo 3 but my bro got it for me in May for my bday. I like Diablo but ive never been a fanboy. Usually fizzle after a week or so.
Picked up playing goof troop on SNES, holy shit, this game is like a prototype of four swords adventures and its awesome.
Now I have a reason to see my brother more often.
Resuming Max Payne 3. It is hard on hard difficulty. I am not sure I can finish it. Too many guys with full armor and they're too accurate
Still playing Persona 3 Portable.
For all this game's faults, I love it to death. I've clocked about 35 hours and I'm just about done with summer break, in August.
The game's music doesn't get enough praise, IMO. It's such a bizarre mix of hip-hop and sparse piano/synth. It really highlights the contrast between day and night.
The music also does some of the best theme and variation work I've heard in a game since Chrono Cross. For example, listen to the Tartarus tracks and pay attention to the first shift that happens (in game, this takes place from block 1 to block 3). This shift occurs at a particular point in the game where a big revelation happens.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_vSblcklfY
The change is fairly simple: the composer adds a sustained minor chord progression, and turns down the synth. But it nicely echoes the changes taking in place in-game.
What faults? Persona 3 is awesome.
He needs to get over it.
I've been playing a lot of stuff lately!
Double Dragon II: The Revenge (FC) - I was surprised by how easy this one is when I tested it. I think I got a Game Over on about stage 6, but every death was due to a fall, which sucked. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to have platform elements in a game where you have to hit A and B together to jump should be beaten. I'm all about a 1cc on this once I get back to it in terms of serious play.
Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone (FC) - This one is hard as a bitch. You don't have lives. When your health reaches zero, it's Game Over. I also don't like the visual style. The first two games in the series have the short, squatty characters. This one goes for more realistic looking ones, but the hardware can't do them justice, so it just looks worse.
Jurassic Park Builder (iOS) - This is a freemium park builder simulation, but it's easy to ignore the "mium" part. It has the obvious dinosaur bonus for me, which probably is what puts it over the top of similar games. I also like that I can play it in very small chunks a few times a day.
Ninja Ryūkenden (FC) - I popped this one in to test it and wound up playing roughly halfway through it before having to continue. It's frankly not as hard as I remember it, which is the opposite of some of the other 8-bit games I've been playing. And, unlike III, the original isn't easier on FC than NES. Of course, I haven't finished yet either, so I'll reserve final judgement.
Wanpaku Dakku Yume Bōken (FC) - I'm never going to call this "Duck Tales" again. It's too fun to say the Japanese title (probably incorrectly). I used to have this game so dialed in that I'd play for score. Now, I'm being super careful to ensure I have enough lives at the end to finish it on Normal. I finished the moon and went back to Transylvania but forgot which way to go, made a wrong turn, and lost my last two lives to fucking mine carts. I'm not playing the sequel at all until I beat this, and I really want to try to the sequel, as I never had it before.
Ys Origin (PC) - Nightmare difficulty in this is legit. I beat the first boss, but it took maybe ten tries. I really like the execution and am glad I was able to get this and Felghana during the Steam sale. Hopefully the rest of the series makes its way there as well.
GohanX and I also got to test almost 30 Famicom Disk System games for Timber yesterday, which was a blast. That has to be the coolest piece of hardware that next to no one has seen in the wild in the US. I think my next blog post will cover that experience in detail.
edit: Blog post is up.
Re-Finch-erator imo, since he's cold.
Double Dragon 3 is garbage, don't even act like it's an acceptable game by any standards.
Kingdom Hearts 3D - Played about 10 hours so far. In The Grid from Tron: Legacy with Riku, the light cycle battle was really fun such that I hope it's not the only one in the game (would be a complete shame if it is). Still have to beat the boss in the Hunchback world with Sora.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - Finished the Spirit Temple and picked up every heart piece, just have to find the remaining 15 Gold Skulltulas before heading off to Ganon's castle. Nintendo and Grezzo did a great job with this remake/port, it looks outstanding and improves on the original. Very much looking to a Majora's Mask 3D in addition to a brand-new 3DS Zelda game we should see sometime in the near future.
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - Reached the PS1 era Final Fantasy games, still mixing and matching party characters. Still can't understand why the demo hasn't been released in NA, such a missed opportunity to have 3DS owners become aware of what an enjoyable game this is.
Renegade Ops - Been wanting to play this for some time now, finally started it last night. Played through the first two missions and really enjoying it. Have only played with Diz (her EMP ability seemed particularly helpful) so far.
Resident Evil 5 - Finally playing this as well, although started to do so a few weeks ago. Other than a rental of Code Veronica (DC), this is the first RE I've played since Resident Evil 2. [I will definitely pick up Resident Evil 4 HD on XBLA at some point, as well as RE: Revelations for 3DS.] The controls obviously take some getting used to, their deficiencies notwithstanding, however I am liking the game quite a bit. Chapter 5-3 was a bit of a pain in the ass at times, but finished it and rescued Jill!
Syndicate - This game continues to be a blast. Still have some Campaign levels to play though, but can't pry myself away from Co-Op - especially now that I'm playing on Hard difficulty - to do so.
Yoshi: I don't think Ninja Gaiden/Ryuwahtever gets difficult until the last few stages after you beat Malth. If you can beat that and call it easy you will get +10 respect.
It's ridiculously repetitive. I know most games are but this one just wears it on its sleeve with every school day being the exact same thing, Tartarus being a bland random number generator that only has variety in the color overlay, and only a limited amount of locations to go to. The style in everything is AMAZING and almost makes up for the gameplay, but eventually I just couldn't bring myself to grind it anymore.I put this back on the other day to revisit co-op for a minute and lost three hours. It is so good.Quote:

baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby
Persona 4 is Persona 3 2.
Every school day isn't the exact same thing. The stuff you do during the day affects your character at night. That's the point.Quote:

I don't want to turn this thread into yet another Persona 3 debate, but this doesn't make any sense.
They're up to Persona 37 in Japanland.
I understand what Chris is trying to say. By the time I got to the days leading up to the final encounter I was slacking on my Tartarus training and going to bed early because I just wanted the damn thing to end already.
They build up scenarios using very basic components and narration that can be reused and recycled like the five ingredients in the Taco Bell menu. I found that they did a really good job with what they had, though, but it is annoying that Tartarus only changes in the most basic, cosmetic ways throughout. You might also get burnt out if you're trying to finish the game as quickly as possible. You need to get used to the fact that this is going to last a really, really long time and put in a couple of hours here and there, like a television series.
Your second comment doesn't reinforce your first comment.
Yes, you choose what social link to pursue. Yes, you occasionally get asked a question. That is the complete extent of the gameplay during school. Every day has the same structure with the same order of events and the random events are always in the same spots at the same times. They'll switch up things like which character model is talking at the front gates in the morning but it almost never has any actual effect on anything. It's fine for a while but the cut-and-paste design of every fifteen minutes being the same thing starts to feel like an anime Groundhog Day after a while, where I want to start killing myself just to change things up.
I don't want to sound too harsh because I did really like what I played, but let's not kid ourselves about the layout.
I never felt like.
so miserable.
I was hoping someone would pick up on the song so we could get to the part where
You gotta tell me your love came all over me
Quarth (arcade) 112670 pts.
Konami puzzle game with a simple idea: all these giant Tetris pieces coming down at you- and if one reaches the bottom line, game over. Shooting at them tacks on other blocks, and forming a perfect rectangle shape clears them out (any other blocks will stop moving down while this is cleared out, giving you time to make more boxes). Getting several different pieces into one rectangle racks up big bonuses.
The BGM by Norio Hanzawa isn't bad, even if it's nowhere near a match for his work on Gunstar Heroes.
I have added a bit of information I've found around the dang internet to this.
I've been playing the shit out of Earthbound Zero and it has been a treat. So much of the music is the same or similar, I'm blown away by how well the music coming out of the NES sounds. Lots of enemies from Earthbound show up, it's almost like a demake. I'll probably make a blog post on the similarities when I'm done.
I'm so entrenched in this "Summer of Retro Gaming" a lot of us have taken part in that I'm reading damn near anything I can get my hands on. I feel like my next system will be either a FDS (sort of redundant since I have the NES) or a cheap SNES.
I'd send you a cheap SNES but I think most of mine are in pieces, used as spare parts for Super Famicoms.
Every once in a while one pops up on craigslist for like $30 with the hookups and a game or two. They're just 2 hours away, and well fuck that.
I hate you.
It has nothing to do with your posts, just with your name. Hate. Hate. Hate.
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE (BRETT)
Well shit.
One thing I've been debating is one of these. As long as you get the newer revision with the blue lettering on the box, it is supposed to work well. Perhaps the most compelling feature, beyond the obvious space saving, is that you can use original controllers on it. And I don't think you use any kind of RGB, so the fact that it caps at S-Video for SNES and Genesis would be a non-factor for you.
WHAT THE FUCK GEO
Isn't that just a fancy emulator?
The thing I posted? No, it plays original NES, SNES, and Genesis carts.
But it uses emulation to run those carts, so there are the usual compatability issues that all NOACs run into.
We sell them, I would never recommend one to someone who took gaming seriously. Colors and sounds tend to be slightly off, and the pack in controllers are absolute garbage. It is nice that you can use OG controllers, but Snes controllers only work on Snes games and so on. So you need six extra controller laying around for optimal performance.
They're fine for people who just want to play Mario and Sonic or something casually. But they really aren't for people like us.
The revision will play Castlevania III, so this one is a step above most NES on a chip clones. There are clear tradeoffs, but if you're not going to use RGB for SNES and Genesis, you're already making similar concessions, so this may be attractive at the size and price.
I agree with this.
IMO, once you've compromised on RGB, it doesn't matter if you play on the original console or a clone.
I use a clone for NES and SNES games, and it works just fine. This unit is perfect for me, plus it uses the original controllers as well (I agree that the generally poor clone controllers is the only real drawback to using a clone unit).
I object on the basis of redundancy.
A bit of old and new this weekend:
Skyward Sword - finishing Hero Mode
Final Fantasy 4 (DS) - never finished the remake
The World Ends with You - never finished it! Been getting back into it
Lost Odyssey - ditto! Got to the very end but never finished it
Theatrhythm - ALWAYS
Xenoblade - trying to chip away at that beast
Last Story - just got it! Not bad so far.
Final Fantasy IV PSP. Just killed Edge's mom and dad. I tried playing through this on DS, but i couldnt stand the ugly 3D graphics. Ive heard people complain about the graphics in this version too, but i will take 16 bit-ish 2d over 32 bit-ish 3d any day.
I am going to try to actually finish this one. But the random encounter rate, god damn i hate this step fight step fight bullshit.
I'm glad someone agrees with me on the PSP version.
Protip: don't play the After Years after you finish 4. Let it sit a month or two.
I almost bought the PSP one, which led me to replaying the DS one - I remember that the DS one had some extra stuff plus new tactics for enemies and new customizable menus. Did any of that make it to the PSP one?
Oh yeah, I'm also replaying FF9, so maybe my 32-bit 3D immunity is on the up.
What should I start first? Blood, Shadow Warrior or RotT? I have played them all before, so none are new, but I want someone else's opinion ;p
Give me a completed DS1 save first ;p
I would play that game again if I knew it wouldn't bug out on me at the damned end. I really do want to play the second one.
I don't know if they patched that bug (I thought they did but I might be remembering wrong), but it's correctable. If I recall, you couldn't equip or un-equip the crossblade or something. You can fix it by going into Chaos mode and then switching the items.
I wish I still had the game. I swear I tried everything humanly possible (so that would be included)...but who knows.
I thought about getting it on the super cheap again because I am sure I have the save.
I couldn't equip the Mask of Shadows to get a sword piece.
i managed to restore a bugged save with the chaos form.
you need to transform to chaosform(save before, you may have to try several times).
while transformed change the equipment in the slots (swap mask with stuff, un/equip the mask) until the mask is not showed in the top right menu anymore.
transform back to normal War.
if the mask is not displayed on his face you were succesful
save (new saveslot preferably) and load that save.
try the mask again.
anyone know what exactly causes the bug?
I can't believe I am going to buy the game again for this. Worst case scenario is that I have the game again and will finish. Otherwise, I will go apeshit. The worst part about it is that I don't even know what that means. I played it two years ago.
I've finished it three times, once on each platform it's come out on. Glad I never encountered that bug.
edit: I found the game ;p
so that's what I am playing after all
nah still don't work for me
It thinks I am trying to equip that Woidwalker thing and even puts that up top despite the fact iit isn't one of the 3 equipped items. I might play with the VW a bit to see if I can't get it unbugged.
I had 6 of the 7 shards too! I forgot how close I was
oh god I think I did it :D
I've been playing a lot of Forza 4 lately. Finished the campaign at around level 60 (just hit level 93) so now I'm going through the Event List which I think is a couple of hundred races. Been doing that for awhile and have barely made a dent in it. My main goals are to get my Ferrari affinity level to 60 (at 21 now), own all the Ferrari's and the 5 most expensive cars in the game. Those are all legacy achievements, getting all the Ferrari's may take years, the cost for them is crazy. I'm waiting for the Porsche pack to go on sale before I pick that up.
Between Forza rounds I want to finish Beyond Good and Evil HD, the zombie pack for Red Dead Redemption and get back into Skate 3. I've run out of room in my rack for cases so I need to finish some things I know I'm ready to get rid of.
When I changed my Blizzard security stuff I noticed the Diablo 3 starter promo, so I downloaded that and played as a Wizard to the Skeleton King. That terrible "just a bit more" Diablo itch is still there.
Just played the Dust demo and liked that a lot, so when I clean this list I'll grab that after Rock Band Blitz.
I started playing Blood and remembered things:
a) It is still hard as hell
b) The rats suck
c) It scares me
I have been playing Apple Jack 2. It's a wonderfully soothing combination of Super Mario Bros. 2 and, oddly, Bangai-O. Like the former, it's mostly about throwing enemies into other enemies. Like the latter, the levels are endlessly inventive and turn the basic concept on its head constantly. Well worth the dollar it costs on XBLIG.
I'm also trucking through Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. I think most JRPGs suck. I hate how they limit your saving to specific points. I hate overly angsty (some angst is fine, I mean, what were YOU like when you were 15?) teenagers that somehow act both far younger and far older than their age. I hate how adults in JRPGs never seem to respect the protagonists yet still send them off on ridiculously dangerous missions. I hate the genre's boring, slow, and yet also brain-dead battle systems. I hate how they're linear and have almost no sub-quests. I hate random battles that don't give you an opportunity to avoid them. It's like somebody took down a list of everything I hate in JRPGs, and then proceeded to make a game that actually manages to avoid every single issue. This is fantastic. I love it.
So 1997.
Xenoblade.
I prefer finished games.
