I actually can't believe I typed that either. Game journalists....who cares, right? They're such losers! Uh, usually the person in question is unskilled and is living check to check. They need the job or the experience. The bosses pick up on that and leverage the ability to work for them to get some free work.

If you're fresh out of college or trying to break into 'dream job' you will give more away than you normally would or should.
People outside of tech think that everyone that graduates MSET is a genius. Or knows everything there is to know in their field. None of them do. None. Everyone has to work at least 4 years in their field before getting a good grasp.
And you gotta think about the job market. Everyone wants 4 years of experience. Everyone. No one wants a fresh MSET. Almost everyone has to take what they can get, put up with the bullshit, build up that resume, then stop taking as much shit in the second job.
Also, you have bosses like the ones Yeller complains about. The ones that string you along. "make this for me and I will give you the kingdom. Job of your dreams"
And what is the alternative? Spend 4 to 5 years getting a programming degree, spend another 6 months to a year to land your dream game programming job...and then leave exactly at closing and get fired in a month for not being a team player?
Then what? You're worse off than when you graduated. You can't put 3 months of work experience on a resume. You can't go into your next interview with "well, I got fired because I left on time." Interviewer is going to think you're lying. And even if they believe you, now they think you won't help the team. They'll pass on you for someone that sounds like they will work harder to help everyone else.
Hell, you probably don't even have any contacts worth a shit because you became the guy that left in the middle of work. Those vets that stay late to finish the project don't want to work with you. You leave on the dot. You probably aren't salaried big fancy pants employee material in their eyes.
And shit, you don't even have any money to pay rent because you spent all of that looking for the job. Guess it is time to move back to Bumblefuck with your parents and start the search again.

I resent the implication that Excel spreadsheets are boring. That's what I spend 80% of my work on and I quite enjoy it. It's like I'm playing a Paradox strategy game, but getting paid for it!
They are better than the alternative. I do some pretty amazing things at work with them.

My favorite is moving employs to a position of failure then letting them go when they fail.
My job has layered policies that are literally impossible to perform correctly. It's pretty much a way to ensure that management can write us up at any time if they want to, though they mostly have that in place to trap people and prevent transfers as opposed to firing them (as I recall you can't transfer departments until a year after your last write-up).
I like being on the precipice of quitting my day job to go do my own shit and hustle freelance.

There may be social pressures to it ("you have to do this on your own time, but it would mean a lot of new opportunities"), but being on salary does not legally make it okay to work unpaid OT. Now, they can ask you to be "OT exempt" and sign a contract/waiver, but you don't have to, and having a salary doesn't mean you won't get extra pay for extra time put in.
At least that's how it is in CA.
