Yeah, that's true. It was pretty easy to call, but I still had a slight bit of hope until after I saw the movie. No matter what, the movie is still awesome, and I'm going to see it again on Sunday. It's kind of difficult to say where I would rank it among the original trilogy movies, because the original movies have 30+ years of nostalgia to tint my view of them. All I know, is that Episode 7 feels like a natural progression from the original trilogy, and that's nothing but a great thing. There is no pre-quel stench to this film...

...BUT (I don't think this is a spoiler, because it's more of an opinion than anything)....I do think the Darth Maul/Obi wan light saber duel in Phantom Menace was better than any of the light saber segments in The Force Awakens. So, The Phantom Menace may have had ONE SCENE that was better than the action scenes in the Force Awakens, but one scene does not make a good movie. As a whole, Episode 7 is quite simply a better constructed film in every other regard.

The twirly ballet light saber fights from the prequels were terrible, I'm glad that 'style' is out.

Yeah, I can see your point about the "twirly ballet light saber fights." In fact, maybe that scene seemed better than it was because of the musical score. Again, I didn't hear original music, as strong as that, in The Force Awakens. That's definitely not a knock against the film, just an observation.

I'm in the same boat. People keep asking me if it is the best one yet, and I don't know how to answer. All I've been telling people is that is feels like Star Wars and that is just makes the prequels look even worse than they did already.

In terms of the saber fights, it's worth noting that there are no Sith or Jedi involved in any of the Episode VII ones. That might have kept the beauty in check a bit.

I also agree about the music, though maybe that will change upon watching it again.

My last initial thought is that Kylo Ren is a completely unlikeable character. He has Vader's evil with zero of the badass. It's as if they let Hayden Christiansen keep playing Vader but with better direction.

The main thing I liked about the prequel fights is that they bothered to really use the force a lot while saber fighting. The fights in here lacked a lot of that, which seemed weird coming from our bad guy.

Some of those scenes were too ham-fisted - I was damn near cringing at the way-too-cliché bridge scene - and I have a few visual issues with Kylo, but overall I really enjoyed it. For Kylo, I was hoping his mask would come off better in the film, but nope, it still looks some chintzy fan-made spinoff thing, and his beautiful, luscious flowing mane didn't make taking it off much better.

But yeah, I'm totally down for more.

Eh, I watched a fight from Episode one and it was all twirling and wire-fu. I'll admit that style was cooler when it came out, but now it looks as cheesy as the rest of the movie to me.
