What's your favorite?
I sooo want Lightening Force. I have 3 and 5 (on PS). How much does the PS version of 5 differ from the Saturn TF5?
Lightening Force is my favorite one.
I have TF5 on PS. I haven't played the Saturn one but since the PS one looks completely like a Saturn game, I imagine it's almost identical.
As for TF1, I haven't played it myself but someone here must have played it on a NEC PC-88 or Sharp X1 emulator. I think it's overhead-only but I'm not sure.
Green: I've heard enough debating about TF5 to know the differences. Minimal.
Additional intro in the PSX version. An additional FMV going into stage 6, I think. PSX version has some added graphical details, like the spinning of the ship if you change direction quickly. Apparently Human Road looks quite a bit better in the Saturn version (I hear you can actually see a city of some sort? the PSX version looks like complete shit, and I honestly can't imagine it looking much better). The beginning of stage 4 has transparency effects in the Saturn version. The PSX version has an art gallery and time attack version the Saturn version doesn't have, and apparently an additional boss (?). That's the basics of it. I also feel the PSX controller is better suited for it (I like using the shoulder buttons).
Honestly, I'm not much of a graphics fiend, so the additional modes push me to the PSX side of things. It's also cheaper and has a nicer cover.
As for the poll (this is by far my favorite shooter series), I picked Lightening Force.
Thunder Force 1 is overhead only. The only one I haven't finished (or even played). They should've put it in Gold Pack 1...
I own:
Thunder Force II
Thunder Force III
Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV)
Thunder Force V (PSX)
Thunder Force Gold Pack 1 (Saturn)
My favorite:
Lightening Force
It's not the best of the bunch, but I picked Thunder Force ||. The main reason for that is that it was one of my first 2-3 Genesis games and I played it to death, even though I was not bery good at it. :)
Thanks Rob. So, how what does it look like for the next Thunder Force? Is Technosoft even around still?
It doesn't look like Technosoft has released any games within the last few years (since PS Thunder Force V and NeoRude), so I have no idea what their deal is. I hope for a PS2 Thunder Force VI... or any other shooters they could muster. Their site appears updated, so there's a smidgen of hope.Quote:

I've owned 2,3 and 5, and I gotta go with 3. I'll get around to lightning force eventually.
I rather hope for a Xbox shooter since I don't want them to put down $14.5k for a PS2 dev kit when the Xbox dev kits are much cheaper and the Xbox is easier to program for which means better programming = better game for us.Quote:

I chose Thunder Force 3 (a.k.a. Thunder Spirits on the SNES) I got this game way back when the SNES was still in full force. Me and my brother played it to death. My second favorite would have to be Thunder Force 5 for the Playstation. Its wicked hard, but nice to look at and lots of interesting enemy desgins and such. I have never played Thunder Force 1, and I have only played a smattering of Thunder Force 2 at a Funcoland once. I was very confused by the overhead-ness of it, at the time I had only played Thunder Spirits and Thunder Force 5. Lightning Force is Ok. I own it but was no blown away by it. I am not a huge fan of the vertical scrolling on some levels, and I don't like the level design as much as the others. There definatly needs to be a new Thunder Force game, there just needs to be.
I would just like point out that anyone playing III-V on anything other than Sega hardware missed the boat.
I've only completed 3 & 5, so those 2 are my favorite.
Do I really suck, or is Thunder Force III hard as crap?
Actually, that happens in the Saturn version as well.Quote:

Yeah, you can see a city.Quote:

TF5 is my favorite.
I might have picked Lightening Force, but the sloooooooowdown really ruins my enjoyment of the game.
Rob: There's some additional parallax in the Human Road stage on the SS version that makes it look quite a bit better. Also, the spinning animation is present in the SS version.
I prefer Thunder Force IV.
TFIV has more stages than TFV, and it has quite a bit more challenge and overall intensity. The bosses are more kickass in IV, unless you're comparing them to V's Guardian Knight. TFV's stage designs also are a bit lacking.
Ampersand- Hang in there with regard to TFIII. It's not easy, but it can be mastered.

and funny,
I just got TF2 off ebay a few nights ago for .99 complete(sunfaded cover)
I've wanted to start a ThunderForce V highscore thread for some time, but figured not too many people would bother with it.
Well, let's see...
Special Combat Team of the Earth Side
dont know much about the series, but i saw a thunder force 3 for the gene complete yesterday for 10$ and was debating on wether to buy it, so should i
Yes, go now and don't post untill you have TF3 in your hands. :DQuote:

Yeah, but it would sell a hell of a lot more on the PS2. Smaller developers need all of the exposure they can get.Quote:

I used to suck at the game when I first owned my Genesis. But now I can beat it asleep without losing a ship. Luckily there's Mania.Quote:

Thanks for the corrections on the ship spinning. I don't know where I got that one from.
I consider Thunderforce 4 one of the great masterpieces of gaming. That is all.
And Saturn TF5 comes off better graphically than the PSone version. It even looks like the clouds in Human Road have less color in the PSone version. *-neo
Is it just me, or is the forest-stage boss in TF5 almost exactly like the forest-stage boss in Panzer Dragoon II? It seems mighty fishy to me...
Thunder Force IV. It's all about the music. Thanks to the wav-dumping feature of Gens, I hear the TFIV intro every time my PC loads into Windows.
<anti-emulation_people_disclaimer>And yes, I own the original cart (bought mint/complete at FuncoLand for $10), so having the ROM does not make me a thief.</anti-emulation_people_disclaimer>
I used to rent TFIV ahile back and I belive it was one of the best shooter experiances I've ever been treated to. Sadly, the game just vanished and I've never had the chance to find it. I was also interested in TFIII because of how positive the reviews were, yet I was only a kid, never quite being able to afford anything unless either of my parents were willing to help out for the purchase.... :(
lightening force for me.
even today, that game still blows away. how is the genesis doing that?
I voted Lightening Force on Genesis as my favorite. I have both loved and hated that !@#$ game. It's a lot more difficult than Thunderforce 3 IMO, which is a GREAT thing over the years, it keeps my interest high. Man, it actually feels good to talk about these games again, it's been a while for me. I haven't played any shooters for at least half a year or more; I suspect that soon the itch will come over me again.
Anyway, LF would cause me to pass out in disbelief if it weren't for the bit of slowdown that reminds us which system it is on. I don't mean that in a negative way really; LF is just a drop-dead gorgeous, fast and exciting shooter and it surely must be maxing out the Genny. I love the Sandstorm on Daser (I think that's the name), and the decent in the clouds in other level culminating in that HUGE boss.
I must resist the urge to play these games tonight ... I just don't have time to waste the whole night playing them again. Gotta wait for a better time ...
