What Are You Playing (Winter 2012-2013 / Postapocalypse)?

I loaded up on sugar late last night and played games until the wee hours of the morning. I found where the wife packed Max Payne 3 so I played it for a couple of hours. I really love this game a lot more than I probably should.

Switched it up for something more lighthearted and dug out my spare spare Sega CD and played some Lunar. I'm annoyed that I had to yaaarrrr this despite owning it since it is also packed up. The thing that struck me the most was that I was using headphones and DAT MUSIC!

is titan quest better than tochlight2?

Titan Quest is terrible. It might be worse than Path of Exile but I don't want to play it again to find out.

Yeah, Titan Quest is the worst Diablo clone maybe ever. I'm always shocked when I'm reminded people exist who like it.

I've been trying out Wizardry Online and... I have no idea how I feel about it. It plays like From Software outsourced a Dark Souls MMO, with a similar look to the environments and colors, a persistent PVP atmosphere that can be carried out anywhere (even in towns), a brutal and unforgiving action combat system, and other touches like the "You Died" in a scrawled font when the obvious happens.

The hardcore aspect is probably the most interesting part, as there is permadeath. You have a soul level, which is what all the characters you make are connected to and determines how far through the story you are and what's unlocked, and then the characters themselves have levels like normal. When slain a character has to run in spirit form from their corpse to the last guardian statue they visited and make a sacrifice, all the while dodging Watchers that are trying to eat spirits. Once the character reaches a statue they have to make a sacrifice in order to be resurrected, and if they run out of time, take too many hits from Watchers, or get rejected too many times by a statue then the character is "permanently" dead and is rendered a tombstone on the select screen. It is supposedly possible to resurrect someone like that by finding their corpse, taking it back to town, and then using some special items but I can imagine that happens all of never.

The character animations are pretty half-assed, and it feels really weird controlling with a m&kb but is smoother with a controller. The actual gamepad support seems a little unfinished and I find myself using the controller for most stuff but still talking to people and looting with the mouse. There's probably a way to fix that but I haven't looked yet. You can also loot other people's corpses for items and so on but this will brand you a criminal, though what that entails beyond getting glowing red eyes and maybe some fights with guards I don't know. When corpse running you can teleport directly to a statue but this will cause a large hit to your equipment durability, so you have to decide whether it's better to pay out the nose for repairs or leave your corpse unguarded to potential vandals.

So yeah, it's not friendly and anyone who's going to play really needs to read the tutorials because the game is a bit obtuse, but it's definitely neat in a masochistic kind of way. A good game overall? Not so sure about that yet.



Also trying to get the achievement in MGS:R for listening to most of the codec conversations while playing through revengeance. They must've recorded like ten hours of dialogue, they have something to say about everything and conversations go on forever. It's ridiculous. After saving a civilian chase after them and slash at the person to take their clothes off, then call up people on the codec.

For someone who has complained about the lack of tough MMOs and the rise of WoW-esque theme parks, you shouldn't be against this.

I'm absolutely not. In fact, your post piqued my interest. The sarcastic surprise face is just aimed at the fact that you are playing yet another MMO.

But really I installed it just out of curiosity and expected to delete it within minutes. It definitely tempted me too, since you can't access video options for the first time until you're in town so I had to watch all the intro stuff and character creation in the wrong aspect ratio and resolution.

The races look almost exactly like FFXI.

edit: ok, I'm downloaded and installed. I think I'll wait until the morning to watch the tutorial videos, since I am watching the baseball game.

edit2: I created a female gnome priest named Gnoma'am, and, as you said, I was finally able to set my video and other options once I got to the town.

The game looks like a PS2 game, meaning it's way better looking than FFXI. In fact, it looks more like FFXII, giving it bonus points in my book. I haven't actually done anything but watch the intro and exit to get the graphic setting changes to take yet though.
