I'm really interested in the technology and will pick up the consumer version when it releases. There isn't too much to check out that is really mind blowing.. just glimpses into possibilities.

I've walked around in my Star Citizen hanger... there is some potential there, when a better rift is released and they (RSI) gets the rift working better in the engine.

The current state or the rift gets me sick almost instantly if I'm looking around and moving at the same time (and I don't every typically get sick playing games.) I would guess it's a combination of the low res and the stuttering.

The motion tracking in the new model is supposed to greatly reduce getting sick.

Yeah i'm looking forward to it. A lot of the features are really exciting. High-res OLED screens! I want to see what they end up with for the consumer resolution.

They sure did, for $2 billion. I guess Facebook needed to find something to help them toe the line of profitability, though this acquisition makes absolutely zero sense to me aside from the "shiny new technology" standpoint. I'm interested with what the people over at Valve think about this, given they have been pretty much the largest philosophical & technology backer of Occulus for such a long time.

This doesn't feel right to me. Oculus doesn't really have a product or brand to merit that kind of capitalization, so what is Facebook buying exactly? I don't feel like this is going to bring Oculus any closer to delivering a better product, since they were already quite well funded, nor do I understand how either Facebook or Oculus will benefit from any shared resources or common goals.

In the broad sense, I understand how VR could be a compelling social experience, but I don't get how this is going to help Facebook or vice versa. Could it be just a speculative buy on their part believing that they're going to be a long term leader in a new market? That seems risky, even naive; like buying 3DFX before the Voodoo comes out on the belief that they're going to continue to dominate the PC video card space.

Once consumer VR successfully penetrates the mass market (and who's to say Oculus will even be the ones to do that?) it's going to be a fiercely competitive market of rapidly evolving devices, and it's not really clear to me that Oculus has any long-term advantage there. If Samsung or Sony or someone who does consumer electronics bought them, it would make a lot more sense, since they've be able to use their internal R&D to stay ahead of the curve rather than depending on outside vendors for things like screens and optics.

Well that's incredibly disappointing.

Credit to the Oculus guys for cashing in big.

Facebook is spending money on acquisitions like crazy; this is one more.
