I only saw Salvation once and didn't really have much of an interest in seeing it again. The story was childish and muddled and most of the acting was shitty but to be perfectly fair, I thought the action scenes were very well done, intelligent, and pretty exciting. That was just about all I cared for in the movie. There's still a chance they can do something positive with this franchise but they'll have to make some major changes and get some proven writing/directing talent to make it.
At this point you might as well reboot the Terminator films, the more the series goes on with the same "continuity" the worse it may get.
It seems to be trying hard to follow the track that the first two movies laid down and kind of loop back into itself but it keeps stumbling to get there. With no Cameron the vision for the franchise is just all over the place and it's unfortunate that stuff like Sarah Conner Chronicles, which was pretty promising, was just relegated to out of continuity side stuff.
A reboot would be the worst.

Everything I like about the first two is very tied in with when they were made and the world being in the right mood to make those movies. The culture happening at the time was a big part of what they are. That culture doesn't exist anymore. You couldn't make Terminator 1 again because that world isn't going on right now. The original ending had Connor dying and the resistance leaders put Connor's skin on the Marcus terminator and he took over as John Connor. I guess. I never got much out of that movie though. The setting and atmosphere was in stark contrast to the rest of the movies and always gave off a really weird and strange vibe to me. I don't feel like it added too much to the story and it kind of stands by itself. I also feel like it lacked a lot of what made the other movies great.
