Ouya Console Coming To Major Retailers

You know, I'm really sad to see this thing sucking so bad. Indies have ridiculous barriers to entry into the living room, and this could have been a great start. I never, ever expected mom and dad to buy it for their kids. Or any core gamer to use it to replace their Xbox. Nobody did. What I hoped for was a console for indie games that indie gamers, developers and the curious casuals could pick up for cheap. The controller issue has written me off. So, now? Back to Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony ass-fucking everyone who wants into the living room. Awesome.

Regarding the controller: Can you just use a PS3 controller like you can with an Android phone? Because if so, problem solved.

That's what I'm thinking, PS3 and wiimotes should work, and I hope USB game controllers will as well.

I'm still optimistic, but the success of this revolves entirely around programmers wanting to do stuff with it. I certainly won't judge it by that review since the thing isn't done yet.

If the lag is the controller itself, then yes. But I have a suspicion (and maybe I missed something in the thread regarding this) that it's currently the unit itself. If it is, then it'll take a fix on the unit-level to correct the lag.

The controller itself doesn't really bother me. It's the lag.

My system arrived yesterday, so I did an unboxing vid, took some game vids, and spent much of the day playing exclusives on it...or at least games that I, as the one person in 2013 without a smartphone, haven't played. In short, I love everything about the controller but the D-Pad, which in unbelievably bad and about on par with a Logitech 360 pad I got from B-Thrifty for $3. I don't like the lack of start and select buttons, but stick presses tend to be used instead of those in the emulators and it's a pretty easy transition to make. The PS3 pad syncs up perfectly, but I could only get a wired 360 pad to work - not a wireless one. Both work well at navigating menus, but not every game supports them.

So, how was emulator support? If a PS3 DS syncs up fine, and the emu support is good, my interest might go back up.

The NES emulator has an outstanding menu, but the button layout feels a bit weird and can't be reconfigured. There was also a bit of delay when I tried Super Mario Bros on OUYA pad - didn't try using another controller though. The two SNES ones work pretty well (and use the sticks in place of the missing buttons). GNES has an awesome cover art loader, and the controller is responsive for both of them. The DS emulator worked fine for Geometry Wars, but had a lot of slowdown with NSMB and Giana Sisters, and I couldn't figure out a way to get the screens to go top to bottom instead of left to right. There's also an annoying controller overlay that makes a ton of sense on a phone, but zero on-screen and it gets in the way of stuff really badly.

I only tried the N64 one with Tarzan, and even then the controller was a bit of a nightmare. The game ran smoothly though, but I had no desire to play it due to the controller. I fiddled with the settings and nothing really felt right with it - I can't even fathom trying to play No Mercy or one of the other dozen games that actually used the pad to its fullest potential. As an emulation box, it's not worth the cost given that pretty much any computer out now will run the same stuff this can, but better - and be guaranteed to support better controllers.

I'm interested in the N64 emulation quality. Had a crack at it on any games yet? N64 emu compatibility is usually pretty iffy overall, last I knew. I'd love to play Wonder Project J2 translated on a proper console.

I decided to start from scratch on the N64 emu and actually get my N64 pad out to make sure I mapped so they'd feel the most natural. I tried some Beetle Adventure Racing and it ran pretty well - controlled nicely too. I tried F-Zero X, but that crashed the emulator a couple of times and wouldn't load. Doom 64 wouldn't show anything but menu text - including in the game itself. Paper Mario looks great until it starts wigging out and all of the stuff in the foreground disappears. Ridge Racer 64 looked perfect until I started a race and ALL OF THE VEHICLES ARE BLACK. Like, none more black. It does make for a cool visual with the brake lights in a tunnel area though.

GNES works with the 360 pad BUT doesn't allow you to use the d-pad - only the analog stick. Not a killer, but odd. Mupen64+ (sadly, no Ultra or Super versions are available yet) also works with the 360 pad. SNESX's menus work with a 360 pad, but not the games themselves. EMUYA (the NES emulator) doesn't support the 360 pad outside of the menus. NDS4Droid works with the 360 pad, but has a lot of slowdown for even something as simple as Kirby Super Star Ultra. This is easily the worst emulator of the bunch so far, and that's without me even trying anything involving touch or the mic. I can only fathom the fun in trying to play Dawn of Sorrow and entering in the stylus symbol shit.
