So how's the Ouya as a Netflix and "external hard drive packed with .mp4s" player? I need something like that and Ouya seems like it'd fit the bill perfectly.

Buy a Roku instead imo.
Netflix works pretty well sideloaded, but using the touch-oriented app isn't as ideal as any console version of it. I tried a sideloaded OnLive a couple days ago, and if you thought it sucked before, it sucks even more on hardware not meant for it. DiRT 3 was nearly unplayable due to input lag.
As far as media goes, VLC works well on it and will support nearly anything you can throw at it. I just hope someone figures out how to get the ps3 media remote or something to work on it. I haven't bothered trying netflix since I'm perfectly happy with using my ps3.
One thing though, the media players currently do not support surround sound.

No surround sound is fine. This is for the bedroom tv, which is just using tv speakers. So long as it runs VLC and can handle any resolution video I throw at it, I'm happy.
Considered a Roku, but I'm willing to shell out a bit extra for an emulator box. Assuming the Ouya costs more than a Roku, of course.

I've got the same scenario as James.
I'm very pleased with it so far, and things can only get better.
Get a Raspberry Pi instead imo. That's what my brother did, cool little piece of tech.
