This is exciting news. I've got one friend who is developing on the console, and the Ouya is the major reason I'm looking at Android support. This may finally push me over the edge. The dream of a feasible open console may finally come true.
The problem with Ouya is that between the time of the KS and now, the hardware has more or less gone obsolete. It's still cute as a competitor for Apple TV or Roku for gamers who want to play emulators and phone games but it's not much of a "console" you know? I doubt it's going to have much longevity.
It's pretty surprising that they are getting such widespread distribution. I might just grab one.
Are there any announced games for this besides Cannibalt and... Samurai Anime FPO Picture?

The hardware may be weak, but it can run what's necessary. It's not meant to be an end-all unit. It's a console for indie developers to work with, despite some of the larger companies jumping in. I don't have the resources to develop anything you'd see on the Xbox 360. I do, however, have the resources to work with this. Plus, the key is design/content, versus hardware. So long as the thing can do powerful 2D on 1080p, I'm happy as a clam.Quote:

If Ouya had to start at the bottom and expand outward based on performance at enthusiast-centric retailers, its success would have been a big question mark as enthusiasts may well have balked at the power of the hardware and it would have fizzled out before reaching wide distribution. But not having to count on that and reaching mainstream retailers right out the gate, they're golden. When Target and Walmart have got a $99 console sitting next to $200-250 ones (and quite possibly $400-500 ones this holiday), they're going to sell a fuckton of the $99 one.Quote:

As for the two against each other, the reason is: the Android market doesn't buy games. The articles detailing the meager sales on Android versus iOS are legion. I've got my own theories, but Android phone users just don't buy stuff. You and I probably do, but the mass of them don't. With Ouya, that's what the system is for: games.

I have a friend with a kit, but he hasn't been doing jack with it. I may ask if he's interested in porting Fowl Ball and the next one. The next game would be pretty awesome as an Ouya title.

I feel that I am going to want a PC with a GF Titan. Not sure if Diff was being serious, but I want to downsample some uber res to 720p or whatever it is for the Rift.
GeForce Titan- probably in the $900 range to start with. Ouya- $99. My PC is nowhere near my tv. So, not a hard choice.

I just want to know what Android games there are. Like Jimmy said, no one plays games on Android devices, and if this doesn't get MANY more developers involved, I am not sure what the point of this is. Indie gamers already have a PC and I don't know if this opens the floodgates to the 'casuals'. They still need a Call of Duty and GTA box.

It's still in testing. That's the point.
These people bought into an early release. It's not yet ready for prime time, but as a thanks for their support (and of course the free beta testing benefits Ouya more than anything) they got the console into their hands before anyone else can.
What about it is junk according to that review? He stated that aside from button labeling, the controller was decent. He stated that you're getting the full horsepower out of the Tegra 3. He said it had all the inputs he wanted and none that he didn't. That doesn't sound like junk to me from a hardware stance.
He complained about OS issues and the lack of games. Two things that potentially can be fixed by the time it is rolled out nationally.
He complained that stealing shit was un-intuitive. Boo hoo.
Based on reading his words throughout that review, at first I thought the 3.5 was out of 5 too. His biggest issues are all things that should be ironed out by official launch.
If they aren't, then I will LOL right along with you.
The lack of confirmation for buying something combined with a laggy controller sounds like a perfect recipe for future bad news.

I want to know what difficulty there is side-loading apps. They just say it's "difficult" but now why or how it's done. If it's just "you have to put the shit on an SD card and select it in the file manager" then fuck you, that shit's easy.
He stated why in the review. The hardest part seemed like it was getting an APK on the machine, which shouldn't be that hard once it rolls out and different sites have APKs on them all ready for someone to download.

He had to upload an apk himself, and then use the Ouya to download it. Then he could install it from a somewhat hidden menu.

yeah, I don't get why he had to download an apk, upload it again, then download with the Ouya. There seems to be an extra step or two there.
I think the ouya browser is bad, so he had to get the apk and I assume prepare it, then put that file somewhere that the ouya browser could just easily see and download a file.
Overall it was a pretty bad 'review' though. I'm not really interested in this and he obviously isn't either, but this opinion-turned-into-official-score is kind of stupid.
The lack of Play Store access also means not having access to my existing library of games, many of which have controller support and would be great for Ouya. I think that kind of shot them in the foot. Although it's also their whole business model, so maybe they were fucked either way.

No, because Play Store shit will actually run on Ouya, there just isn't a convenient delivery method. But I can download a game on my phone, back it up with TiBu, copy it to the Ouya and restore it and it will play. It's functionality that could be there.Quote:

Plenty of other people have tried to make their own markets for Android-based devices (Amazon, B&N, even Verizon for a time...) and it sucks every time. I get why they do it, but it makes those products a lot less appealing to me.
The real question is, how is Google store access not a requirement for an Android device?

You know, I'm really sad to see this thing sucking so bad. Indies have ridiculous barriers to entry into the living room, and this could have been a great start. I never, ever expected mom and dad to buy it for their kids. Or any core gamer to use it to replace their Xbox. Nobody did. What I hoped for was a console for indie games that indie gamers, developers and the curious casuals could pick up for cheap. The controller issue has written me off. So, now? Back to Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony ass-fucking everyone who wants into the living room. Awesome.
Regarding the controller: Can you just use a PS3 controller like you can with an Android phone? Because if so, problem solved.
That's what I'm thinking, PS3 and wiimotes should work, and I hope USB game controllers will as well.
I'm still optimistic, but the success of this revolves entirely around programmers wanting to do stuff with it. I certainly won't judge it by that review since the thing isn't done yet.
If the lag is the controller itself, then yes. But I have a suspicion (and maybe I missed something in the thread regarding this) that it's currently the unit itself. If it is, then it'll take a fix on the unit-level to correct the lag.Quote:

So, how was emulator support? If a PS3 DS syncs up fine, and the emu support is good, my interest might go back up.
The NES emulator has an outstanding menu, but the button layout feels a bit weird and can't be reconfigured. There was also a bit of delay when I tried Super Mario Bros on OUYA pad - didn't try using another controller though. The two SNES ones work pretty well (and use the sticks in place of the missing buttons). GNES has an awesome cover art loader, and the controller is responsive for both of them. The DS emulator worked fine for Geometry Wars, but had a lot of slowdown with NSMB and Giana Sisters, and I couldn't figure out a way to get the screens to go top to bottom instead of left to right. There's also an annoying controller overlay that makes a ton of sense on a phone, but zero on-screen and it gets in the way of stuff really badly.
I only tried the N64 one with Tarzan, and even then the controller was a bit of a nightmare. The game ran smoothly though, but I had no desire to play it due to the controller. I fiddled with the settings and nothing really felt right with it - I can't even fathom trying to play No Mercy or one of the other dozen games that actually used the pad to its fullest potential. As an emulation box, it's not worth the cost given that pretty much any computer out now will run the same stuff this can, but better - and be guaranteed to support better controllers.
I'm interested in the N64 emulation quality. Had a crack at it on any games yet? N64 emu compatibility is usually pretty iffy overall, last I knew. I'd love to play Wonder Project J2 translated on a proper console.

I decided to start from scratch on the N64 emu and actually get my N64 pad out to make sure I mapped so they'd feel the most natural. I tried some Beetle Adventure Racing and it ran pretty well - controlled nicely too. I tried F-Zero X, but that crashed the emulator a couple of times and wouldn't load. Doom 64 wouldn't show anything but menu text - including in the game itself. Paper Mario looks great until it starts wigging out and all of the stuff in the foreground disappears. Ridge Racer 64 looked perfect until I started a race and ALL OF THE VEHICLES ARE BLACK. Like, none more black. It does make for a cool visual with the brake lights in a tunnel area though.

GNES works with the 360 pad BUT doesn't allow you to use the d-pad - only the analog stick. Not a killer, but odd. Mupen64+ (sadly, no Ultra or Super versions are available yet) also works with the 360 pad. SNESX's menus work with a 360 pad, but not the games themselves. EMUYA (the NES emulator) doesn't support the 360 pad outside of the menus. NDS4Droid works with the 360 pad, but has a lot of slowdown for even something as simple as Kirby Super Star Ultra. This is easily the worst emulator of the bunch so far, and that's without me even trying anything involving touch or the mic. I can only fathom the fun in trying to play Dawn of Sorrow and entering in the stylus symbol shit.
