I waited for MGS4 to get a PS3 and ended up getting it cheaper, and having more fun stuff to play when I finally got it.
If Tekken X Street Fighter is a PS4 launch game I'm getting it day one though.
I only bought the Wii at launch and deeply regretted it. The Vita was more than worth it. Guess it depends!
There will probably be a game or two within the first few months that I don't want to wait for. We'll see!
That's usually the time frame where I buy. I got the 360, Wii, and PS3 a month or two after launch. The 3DS was the only recent system I got literally day one. But I've gotten better. I waited quite a while for the Vita (and then used credit card points), and obviously the Wii U hasn't happened now four months later. The longer you wait, the easier it gets from my experience.
I don't recall how long after the DS debuted that I bought it. It was a blue fat, and I played Nanostray the most.
PSP was day one.
I bought the 360 around the time of Oblivion.
I got the PS3 a few months after release (because I was able to get a trade in 60gb for $200.)
I don't recall when I got the Wii. But it was early on and even as I purchased it, I wondered why I was doing so.
I held out on the 3DS for a week.
I held out on the Vita for a week.
I held out on the Wii U for a couple weeks, and only purchased one because I was able to turn $175 out of pocket into $400 credit at Gamestop.
Based on these findings, as much I as don't care about the new systems, I can't control myself very well around new hardware. If there are ANY games that interest me or if I can get a decent deal, I will own the new systems within a few weeks of launch.
I used to wait a few years on new hardware because I was poor. Now I wait because I'm a bitter old man.
For the record, I've gotten better. I got the DC, PS2, GBA, and GC on Japanese day one. I got the Sega CD, Saturn, PSP, and DS US day one. So waiting a month and now waiting several is significant progress.
edit: And dreaming about the pair of SLI'd GTX 760s that skipping the PS4 and Xbox would afford me isn't improving my anticipation of the new consoles.
I haven't gotten hardware day one since the PS2.
I might get a PS4 though.
