Are We Warping Kids or Am I Too Uptight?

I thought my parents were stupid when they wouldn't let me play Doom anymore and didn't let me buy Mortal Kombat. I spent my whole life thinking how ridiculous it was but now I feel the cycle repeating. I'm already thinking of this shit in regards to my son and how he shouldn't be allowed to play certain games or watch certain movies until he is old enough. I think it has a negative impact on emotional development to expose kids to certain things too early.

Also, I don't think kids grow up "too fast" these days. They just get fed a bunch of stuff they shouldn't and get left with figuring out how to deal with/think about it at a maturity level that isn't ready for a lot of stuff.

Kids grow up too stupid, if anything.

I had all that stuff. But my dad was pretty awesome and pushed none of the religion. My mom felt we should all go a bit and she didn't push things on religious grounds either. Things were wrong because they said so, not because of hell or satan. Of course when I was 8, I thought "because I say so" was a pretty stupid reason too. As far as I can remember, I've never had respect for authority as a justification for itself or what it does.

by then I usually caved and just did what they wanted.

Funnier still was when I was 3 or 4 and wanted toys they didn't want to buy.

"I want this"
"We aren't here to buy toys. Put it back"
"BUT I WANT THIS"
"you want a spanking?"
"NO, I said I want this"
"you want a spanking from Mr Built?"
"NO, I DID NOT SAY THAT"
"its what I heard, that you want a spanking from mr built. I don't know why you'd want that, but you keep saying it"
"I said I want the toy"
"there it goes again" *starts to lift up shirt for belt*

I was usually teary eyed by then and put the toy back, grumbling under my breath about how mean he is.

Its all funny now. I'm sure some people would read that and be appalled.

I kind of feel sorry for my kids because I'll be able to argue with them all day and they'll never win.

This is the becoming the Sound Off equivalent of the PC/console debate in Gaming Discussion. Christians don't have the facts on their side, just like console gamers, and you're even more unlikely to change the religious people's minds.
