What are you looking for in AC?

Dense cities, lots of climbing, chases that go every which way between, over, and around buildings, thick crowds to blend in with while slipping between groups that are heading in different directions to stealth my way into areas, and so on. This looks more like the AC3 style of an era with flat cities and more group fights. It's not necessarily a bad decision, just a different one, and maybe trailers of actual gameplay will show off something more to my fancy (hopefully being less glitchy than AC3 will also help a lot). They released another trailer besides the one shown above but it's all just freeze frames of Edward bashing faces in.
I think one of the better quests in AC3 was the one where you had to clear out three boats and remain undetected. Sneaking onto the sides of boats and yanking people off so that I could scramble up the mast and air assassinate the tough guy was great, helped by that the ship masts were taller than almost any of the buildings in the cities.
I guess with how soon this is being announced after part III's release, I'm not surprised that its a prequel. I am a bit unmmoved by the Caribbean environment because I feel like its we've seen bits of it already in part III. I was hoping they'd go drastically different, maybe like that one fan made feudal China assassins creed art looked. But what the hell, I'll buy it and play it cause I dig the series.
As to moving away from the vertically oriented stuff... in part III they didn't seem to be able to hit that right combination of utilizing rooftop movement and combat with city street fighting. Boston and New York just weren't good AC-ish cities to work with. Most of the work seemed to focus on the Frontier, which I'll be honest while cool at first is now one of the reasons I won't be replaying ACIII. Hopefully the Caribbean cities offer more in terms of the free-form assassination basics the press release says the developers want to go back to.
Totally agree with your above point, and I'll ask you this. Did you ever have a needful reason to use the escape windows or doors in New York or Boston? They removed the hiding places on your minimap and it really took away from being able to plan an escape route on the fly when on the run from guards. I think I ran through a door by accident once and I wasn't even being chased. Good idea but poor execution by not having them more readily marked. Also crowd blending was extremely minimized in AC III. I felt like it wasn't even a necessary part of the series anymore.
I felt like I had to plan escape routes on the fly in AC3 plenty. Actually I even liked the less vertical approach, because vertical in the other games was always annoying. It was slow to climb, the stiff controls made it hard to jump from house to house without falling to the ground, etc.
But I'm not some long-time AC fan - quite the opposite.
I was so excited when I found the door/window chase escapes and then never had a reason to ever use one in an actual chase. They weren't very obvious either, which helped them appear more natural but also meant I wasn't looking for them if I was on the run. Crowd blending was really only good for eavesdropping missions, it definitely felt less necessary than in the rest of the series.
I hoped this would be an April Fool's joke...UBI sure knows how to kill their franchises.
Some gameplay details. They've also apparently been working on this since 2011.
