Resident Evil 0-3: Would You Want Re-makes/Re-releases of These?

I have a 360 and access to Code Veronica, RE4, RE5, RE6 and Operation Raccoon City but 0-3 aren't available in any form on there. I still have the Re-make on Gamecube but I gave away my N64 so I don't have the 64 version of RE2 nor have I ever played RE3.

Zero isn't a big deal or anything but it would be cool to have either ports or remakes of the first 3. The biggest issue would probably be upscaling the pre-rendered environments unless they remade them in 3D which I wouldn't mind either provided a good enough engine. Would you guys be up for this or are you fine with the PSN versions of the first 3?

I would love a REmake 2 and 3. REmake is still the best RE game of all time. Use the same looping video background tech and I'm in.

No remakes needed. The original games play fine.

I played through the Director's Cut of the PS1 RE over the summer and it is still great. The graphics are pretty good for the era.

The wonky character animation and bad voice acting are part of its charm.
REmake is awesome in its own right, though, and I'd love to see RE2 get the same treatment.

I'm down for REmake 2. Love 2, it'd be great to play it all cleaned up.

Loved RE1 and RE2. I would still take the originals today, non HD on XBLA. However, REmake was amazing. That game scared the shit out of me with the brilliant new atmosphere and the additions of that crazy mutated woman and the zombies that came back even stronger if you didn't torch them. I'd pay maybe $10 for RE1, 2, and 3, but I would pay upwards of $30, or more, if they really did a good REmake 2 and 3.

I'm in the camp of wanting to see REmakes of 2 and 3. And I think I'd actually want them done with DC/GC level tech, so that 0-4 and CV would all look in parity.

If they don't overhaul the gameplay, nope. I don't tolerate those crap controls.

No. Not that 4's are good...that tank shit can go away.

The difference is that the enemies in the old games are so dumb and slow that it doesn't matter, and the fixed camera angles and instant transitions pretty much necessitate the tank controls.
Having to point a laser to get headshots on dozens of mobile baddies is much harder than just choosing high, middle, or low.

A control scheme is a control scheme. Just do it and shut up.

RE 1-3 for life.

You don't play RE for the gameplay anyway.

You play it for the story, setting and atmosphere.

Except you do play RE4-6 for the gameplay. They're all pretty good on that front.

I'd love to see RE 2 and 3 done REmake style. That would be a day 1 purchase for me.

I'm not particularly fond of the controls in this day and age but if I have to adjust then that's just how it has to be, I adjusted to Code Veronica and the Remake well enough though. Don't get me wrong, it would be great if they offered both new and old control schemes but who knows?

It's kind of silly to think this kind of thing WOULDN'T sell though given the popularity of the games and movies, it's amongst Capcom's highest selling properties.

I'd love to see similar level remakes of 2 and 3 that 1 got on GC. I don't think I trust Capcom of today to do it though.

Well they could use the same technique of pre-rendered backgrounds and such. That's the basis of those early RE games, but they probably wouldn't use the same engine. It'd probably be easier to make a new one, or base it off their current engine, than try and port GC code to new consoles and PCs.

I think he only supplied the DualShock edition soundtrack for RE, which is just weird and goofy to begin with.

That's not what this is though. Remaster to me at least implies an upscale. REmake was a full-on remake that is now being remastered. Though it's possible, it'll be a while before a true remaster of a remaster, and the assets would be so ugly by then that it probably wouldn't make sense.

Then you're wrong. When a movie is remastered, do they reshoot it? Because that's what the equivalent of REmake would be. If you're changing the original assets, that's not a remaster, and the original assets for RE2-3 look like shit, so no one would want to make them more clear.

The point stands that I would prefer they bring one of the other games up to this level, like remaking 2 or 3 instead of Remastering the remake of 1.

I've probably played the DS version more than any other now and I still love the clunky graphics and awkward control scheme.

Why would anyone play Director's Cut? (Technically the Dual Shock release is the one with the fucked up soundtrack, it's like Director's Cut Mark II)

There's going to have to be some effort put into this. The way REmake was made means you can't just run it in HD and call it a day. All of the backgrounds were pre-rendered at SD resolutions. They're going to be working with assets that are 10+ years old which might be a problem. It really depends on what those assets were made in, and any proprietary stuff used in that software. I could have sworn it was made in Softimage XSI, which had it's final release last year. I don't use XSI personally so I can't really comment on the ease of opening up 10+ year old assets in a newer version of it. That is if Capcom still has computers with XSI on it, since I don't think Autodesk is selling it any more.

3D Modeling and animation software packages are huge beasts with lots of code. Stuff that gets changed, reprogrammed, syntax's changed, code that controls shaders changed and all kinds of stuff from version to version. Which can cause stuff to not load, things to not render properly, stuff that worked might not any more. They may be lucky and the stuff opens up just fine in a newer version and all they have to do is re-render it at a higher resolution. That is if they have every texture, and every model from the game saved/backed up, and not just the 2d rendered out images. They may not be as lucky and some stuff might be broken when they open it up, or it could fall some where in the middle. It's hard to say. Personally I've had some older stuff open up and work just fine, and I've had others where they crash the program when trying to open them and basically need to be recreated from scratch.

Not only SD resolutions but also in a 4:3 aspect ratio. 16:9 means it's going to need at least camera work. This isn't just have the intern rerender some scenes and call it a day.

I sold my Playstaiton before RE2 came out, so I eventually ended up getting the game when it came out on N64.
As soon as I got home from the store, I turned the game on and played until I had beat it with both characters before turning it off, and then did the same thing the next day with the alternate modes.
I don't normally play games for more than an hour at a time, but it was just that good.

so, I've kind of never played this series, Other than the games on ps3

What is the best way to play all of them? N64, PS1? remake on gc, directors cut, original?

RE 2 -- N64
RE 3 -- Dreamcast
RE Code Veronica -- Xbox 360
RE 4 -- PC

Dino Crisis 2 -- PC

The N64 version is the superior RE2? I never knew. Why is that?

Better control options/expansion pak graphics. Cinematics and music are more compressed, but not enough to be awful.

The N64 game also has alternate scenarios, so you can play Claire's story with Leon and vice versa, and it has Hunk and Tofu.
Also, no disc means faster load times, obviously.

For me, it's all about the alternate control scheme that lets you move in whatever direction you're pointing the joystick.

The ability to randomly distribute the item locations also helps the game's replayability.

I don't like the analog controls. It's very disorienting when the camera changes.

RE 2 on N64 is a Christmas miracle given how much stuff they were able to cram in there let alone the fact that it also had the CG cut scenes.

It seems like it weighs at least twice as much as most N64 carts.

Looks like somebody went nuts with sharpening the wall and floor textures in Photoshop. Reminds me of some of those awful high resolution texture packs out there for Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.

I decided to just watch someone beat the gamecube one in 1080 on youtube.

It was ok. Kind of boring given all the back tracking and just how many zombies you can just walk around

The HD graphics are darker, too. Now all they need is light bloom, a filter that makes everything look like plastic, and tiny, unreadable fonts and it'll look like a real modern game.

I think it looks better character model wise but the background does look like the did a pass in CS6 with a sharpening filter. Still, looks better than I expected in that regard.

Can I ask you honestly, what were you trying to get out of this? You asked what the best way to play the game was- do you mean graphics, version, ease of setup?

Then you watch a playthrough on youtube and are satisfied? Did you want to know the story, see all the rooms? Do you feel that watching a playthrough is a sufficient replacement for playing the game and you get close enough to the same experience?

For the Let's Play audience, most games are connect the dots without a lot of actual 'play' to them. I don't condone it, but I understand.

Half the fun of RE for me is playing and unlocking shit like TOFU and going back through the game and enjoying how different the feel of the thing is, but 'feel' doesn't matter to a lot of folks.

I did this with Deadly Premonition because (the original) has the worst gameplay of all time.

But I wouldn't do it for pretty much anything else.

Watching a plot-heavy video game instead of playing it is always going to be worse than the shittiest movie.
