I'm reading that there are issues beyond the game-breaking bugs. Multiple reviews have said that it seems unfinished and is just generally kind of a shitty adventure game.
Edit: Albeit a beautiful one.
Well, in fairness, RPS has trashed every. single. adventure game they've reviewed, pretty much ever. Except for maybe some new-fangled artsy walking simulator types. Almost every criticism he has could be said of Neverhood as well, except for the bugs.
The game is good, it works in all the ways its predecessor worked. There are maybe one or two kinda bullshit puzzles that could have used more setup. But it's very very buggy. Not unplayable buggy because it's a point-and-click adventure, but still like totally incompetent buggy. Like music just drops out for no reason and then two songs play at the same time and it doesn't know how to deal with the fact that I pushed a block under a door... But nothing that ruins the game outright for me.
I still say you can contrast Tennapel pretty well with Orson Scott Card.
Doug Tennapel has some rough views that I don't see eye-to-eye with, but his work is mostly unrelated so I have no problem supporting it. His more personal work only focuses on his more positive beliefs. Earthboy Jacobus is a pretty good example!
Orson Scott Card uses the money gained by his work in active opposition to the same people Tennapel isn't a fan of. He works his negativity into some if his stories and almost ruins all of his good work. There are also many stories I've heard from his comics days of him flat out being a dick. So, I buy his books used. He is the Chick Fil A of science fiction: so great if not for that one aspect...
